Perfect ending! I can't complain about anything. All of the main characters stayed alive. I hope their stories are re-visited on the big screen. Okay, when Raylan fell to that pavement, my heart started beating fast and I started to sweat! But then when I saw the hat, I knew he'd made it. But damn! Did the writers get me with that one! So glad Ava lived and moved on with her life with lil-zach. How cute was he! Glad Raylan told Boyd Ava had died. Now his son has a chance to live a normal life with Ava without the ghost of his father's past to haunt him. That was a noble action for Raylan. He did the right thing.
Raylan got his happy ending! I never thought he and Winona would end up together as a couple. But I did feel he'd be a present father to his daughter. That little actress was beautiful! Perfect casting for Raylan and Winona's daughter.
I'm sad to see Justified go, but that really was an ending they all should be proud of. Cheers!

WKW, Although I felt (a) Markham's demise was rushed. (b) god know's how Boyd got out of the hills and choppers/dogs in the "impossible to navigate hills", (c) how he found Markham in a weed drying shack and (d) how did he get a car ... Markham getting hit in one eye goes back to his first scene with his love Katherine. She say's how about an eye. Markham says, hell someone could still get a drivers license with one eye. Fitting he was taken down by one-eye. No drivers license applicable now. JC None of those logistics really matter in the end. They had under an hour to end the series. And they did a wonderful job, even without getting caught up in the specifics of who did what and how. There was no way to touch on all of that in 45 minutes. Perhaps some of those scenes were cut and will be on the DVD.

Loved the end scene with Raylan protecting Ava. Those close ups of Tim and Walt hark en back to several scenes at "the prison" where the DP shot them beautifully in close up. I'm not liking that they married Winona off to another dolt; but Wkw reminded me that is the way Elmore wrote it, but Come On....they could have left it vaporous for us to decide, couldn't they give the shippers a break? Both Jon and I gnarled aloud "Nooooo...they didn't make it?". Tim was very Un-Raylan there for a minute in that scene, probably because he is just more natural around children, maybe? The flash forward as a dramatic tool really surprised me, especially for a piece such as Justified with very little time lapse over 5 years. It was a bit startling; out of place if you will. I really don't like those in your face notifications. We could have figured out it was a few yeas later by the kid. One thing is certain, the Justified audience is smarter than the average viewer, so we don't need things spelled out as such. I felt this season did over do it in a couple of places with such things, for instance introducing Loretta's great aunt only to kill her off just to underscore that Boone and Markham are bad guys. Same with Boyd killing the hostage. Little Boyd. They should have had the kid talking and talking and talking. Not sure, but is there any possibility that was Walton's little boy? Ava was supposed to be a babysitter and a horse groom? Come on, Duffy must have left her some cash, no? Couple of things...why wouldn't all the other LEOs on the case just re-arrest Raylan after Art gave him his shield back? Does that make sense? Raylan coming up against a guy like him from KSP was funny. I like the little flash in of Ella May ( she looks rested from her sleep number bed commercials!) and Limehouse, and Duffy. Wynn Duffy Adventures to come, maybe? If so, it just won't be the same without Jonathan Kowalski as Mike at his side. Yes, the black hat is the tip to Elmore, 'ripetebook, this season was full of those, and they were all clever. I feel like I've just moved away from my neighborhood. I will miss these characters so much. I love them one and all- good bad and in between. And you all here in the forum as well.

Dear MCM, The forum's not ending is it? I hope Tim starts picking of movie roles now (Let's hope for a decent part in Snowden)and we can discuss those. Or the weather....whatever. Speaking of hats, am I crazy or did the white hat get lost and re-appear? When the sherrif/state police dude arrested Raylan, he took Raylan's hat off and put it on top of the car and pushed Raylan into the back seat. We never saw him take it off. Then, it shows up again on Raylan's head. Am I crazy? The little Willa was adorable and it was fun to see Timothy reacting with her. The little boy's name was Ryder Cohen so he's probably not Walton's son unless he's operating under a "stage name". I'm still sad thinking there's no more. Keep talkin' ladies.

I, too, just watched it on iTunes. Sheesh. It's still not available yet on Amazon. I LOVED it. I'm so happy that Raylan made it out of Harlan alive. And Boyd and Ava? That's icing on the cake. Kind of bummed that Raylan and Winona didn't make their long odds given even by themselves. They didn't make it in Elmore's books, either. Still, they had a good final scene, very reminiscent of the Pilot. Willa and Raylan are adorable. And I like this new guy much better than Gary. It goes to show that people really don't change that much. Also noticed they were playing Raylan and Winona's theme at the end scene with Raylan and Boyd. LOL I've watched that hot Raylan and Winona scene so many times, it seemed a little out of place for that reason alone. I do like the music though. Loretta was awesome! Markham's demise was gross. Boone went down about the way I expected. Is that Boone's business man's Stetson that Raylan now wears? Again, high on his head? Not enough Tim and Rachel. Guess we can't have it all in an hour long episode. Art and Raylan's scenes were awesome. And of course, I was happy Raylan gave Ava a pass. Funny to think that if things had been very different, little Zachariah and Willa could have be playmates. I loved Raylan could related to Ava and Zachariah on that childhood level. It was cool to see Ellen May and Limehouse in passing. I busted up laughing out loud at Duffy's Dog Van. The episode should get an Emmy just as Always (also the series finale) did for FNL's. Always also did a time jump to show where the characters were. It was also hopeful. I like hopeful. The Promise is the perfect bookend to the Pilot, which I did re-watch last night and am glad I did. Love it. But also sad it's over.

Just a mention of Boon(e). I have always liked Jonathan Tucker and was SO stoked to see him on my favorite TV show. He was especially good in a show, several years back, called The Black Donnellys, sadly cancelled before its time. Good to see him here.

bookperson, re the hat. I noticed that too. When the officer put the hat on the car I figured that was how they would get rid of it (for Elmore Leonard purposes, which they finally did.) Low and behold, it reappears. Another one of those continuity glitches that we used to talk about.

I know this is silly but did anyone else see the finale as open enough to maybe have a justified movie? They gave it options...peter Leonard could...okay I guess I am in stage whatever of grief...denial!!!!!
And yeah Winona pissed me off. He isn't that angry unreliable marshal. She made the offer that he could have her and be him...it was only four years....when did dull Richard enter the picture? Love that Willa clearly adores her daddy. So if Raylan meets someone just for him...bet Winona wants him back!!! She is the messed up one not Raylan!

Ripe,
As I posted, what was gained by Winona breaking her promise? Could they have tried and failed 4 years later? Yes. The 4 year time jump was really needed to set up Ava with Boyd's child. But again why break that emotional promise to six-year viewers?
Even Yost admits that Rylan is still in love with her.
It was 99% satisfying to see Rylan win his badge back, gain Art and the staff's respect and relocate to Florida
But why not just give the viewer 100%?
I don't see an upside. They had to know it would be viewed as a downside. But ultimately and in fairness to the writers they ended with his Elmore's Rylan. Not what we wanted. Which then begs the question? Why have Winona say what she said in the middle of the season?

Yep, ripe, I can totally see an opening for a movie. That's why I loved the ending. Winona has been a thorn in my side since season two, but I don't blame her for moving on with her life . She has her daughter to think about now. It's not about Raylan anymore. Timothy said Raylan did not change that much throughout the seasons. Raylan is who he is. And he was never a man made for marriage. He loves hard, but he's a hard man to tie down.
I called it on the last scene with Winona and Raylan in the hotel. The look on Raylan's face made me know they would not be together in the end. But it's nice to see them co-parent like healthy adults. The R/W scenario stayed within Elmore's world. Which is what GY and Timothy were trying to do.

GY has said he wanted to do 'What Elmore Would Do' as much as he could this season. And he did in this episode, including the Raylan/Winona relationship. I'm a big R & W shipper, but I also know they can't get along in the day to day. They gave themselves a 50/50, 51/49 chance of making it. As someone who's been married and divorced, I know that failed 2nd marriages do not last as long as a first. We recognize the signs of a marriage gone wrong a lot sooner. And why be in a bad marriage (especially Raylan) with a child involved to witness the unhappiness? It also seems right that both Ava and Raylan (with their crazy, violent childhoods) would (neither of them) not find happiness in their marriages or long term relationships . . . yet would both strive to the best parents they can be. I was a little disappointed they didn't make it. But I'm so satisfied that all three major characters made it out of Harlan alive, I can live with it. Neither Raylan, Ava, nor Boyd got everything they wanted. Each of their endings is bitter sweet. But they're all alive to maybe someday tell another tale.

I wish I saw a good side of Winona! But we go back...they were married and when he got a transfer... She met and screwed Gary...leaving Raylan. Then six years later he comes to Kentucky and she makes the move on him. He hesitated for a second til she removed that ring. They try again and when he rescues Loretta she decides enough and leaves again. The irony that Loretta may have saved him...
Even the jump...she came to him wanting him back. And he again tried. So who is Richard? What did Raylan do wrong or maybe he did nothing and Winona just can't commit. Bet in time she will leave Richard cause she wants that really fine man named Raylan Givens!!!!
What we needed was Raylan to close that door forever..to say no thank you!!!

Last post to old friends I will always be thankful for this group taking in a social media "newbie" on the old FX board many years ago. And thankful to WKW, who found me stalking on www.tv.com (btw ... how stupid is that name ... do you know how hard it is to google that name?) I treated myself to a second viewing of the last episode. Better with age. I had the opportunity to watch the Justified Paley hour event and when I watched the episode again I could see the real emotion (not staged) in their eyes as it all came to an end. This cast and writers have the right to cry. 13X6 is a lot of work. When I watched the finale a second time, I did break down. I cried because I love the people who - against all odds - made one of the best shows of all time. I cried because I was saying goodbye to characters - good and evil - who had become family. And I cried, because this special group, is risks dying. All the best to everyone. Especially the better gender. I was always reminded of a truism throughout this forum. Women are so much smarter than men. And if I got 1 out of a 100 right in comments; that's good enough for me! Love JC

I was reading through all the final episode articles, and Timothy said he would be interested in playing Raylan again, a couple of years down the road. I think he said maybe a miniseries type deal. That would be great. I can totally see FX agreeing to that. I believe they own the rights to TV Raylan, right? Or can someone else, like HBO create a Raylan series?

I can't wait until Justified is available on Netflix. Right now, Amazon Prime has an exclusive on the series. I happen to have Amazon Prime because I save enough on shipping this year to pay for the membership. And I buy each season on Amazon (it's not available on Prime until an entire season has aired), as I don't have FX on my cable subscription. (Last night was a joke. It was not available on Amazon until much later today, atypical. So, I had to go over to iTunes and buy it. I saw you had to do the same, Justified CEO. Are we loyal, die hard fans or what??? I would have paid most anything to see the finale STAT.) Justified never enjoyed big ratings over at FX. FX says they weren't concerned. But we all know a series has an new afterlife when available on Netflix. I can't wait for a new audience to discover the secret of what we've all known for years . . . that this show is some kind of special.

Re: the time Jump....I wasn't saying it wasn't necessary, JCEO, I was saying I hate the text 4 YEARS LATER being blurbed at us. I took a film class back in the stone age, when scholastic Scientist like me still had to dip our toes into the pool with the Liberal Artist. In the class we went over those kind of techniques and the professor had a Staunch pet peeve about it. He pointed out to us lots of ways to tell the viewer where and when without blasting it in text. One of his favorites was Cuckoo's Nest; in which only a license plate give you the location of the asylum. To this day I appreciate those little techniques vs "HELLO! VIEWER! WE ARE IN THE FUTURE IN MIAMI!". In fact when that kind of caption comes on my Husband or I knock on our skulls and say "Hello? McFly? " because it is so obvious. Also super Obvious voice overs get on my nerves.

I googled "Justified series finale reviews" and came up with a ton of reviews. Haven't read them all yet. Don't have time to cut and paste everything, plus I usually mess up when I do, hopeless techno-idiot that I am. But there is a lot there if this helps.
Also, under related searches, "Justified series ending," also has two with Graham Yost from Deadline and Yahoo.

The more I watch this episode the more emotional I get! I cried when Raylan tells Ava he won't turn her in and omg the prison scene of Raylan and Boyd...it was the last scene Walton did for Justified! Even the ice cream scene touches me...he's teaching her ice cream...yeah Raylan!!!!!! The only thing I wish...when she left the playground a hug with daddy or an "I love you". Of course I would Be a puddle after but.....

Did anyone catch in the Miami office...when he speaks to charlie...that is their marshal advisor!!! He finally got on camera. Like the new hat...those of us who watch and read everything...the new hat was designed for timothy and yes this one he kept!!!!
I know it is a kindness...all the talk of spinoffs and miniseries. Of timothy showing interest in playing Raylan in miami.... Makes the withdrawal bearable....well almost!!!! I think he is slowly realizing Justified and Raylan were a gift!!!! He will be forever Raylan...coolest character ever!!!! Same applies to Boyd/Walton. Joelle/Ava to some degree.
Still wish they gave us a bit more on Winona. In four years she tried with Raylan and as parents made it work. His badge isn't the issue this time so...Richard seems more Gary than Gary! And punk is not short for pumpkin! Right on Raylan!!!! Not stubborn Winona...he adores his little girl...his protective nature is always alive.

Perfect casting for Raylan and Winona's daughter. I'm sad to see Justified go, but that really was an ending they all should be proud of. Cheers! I agree with everything you said here. I sort of thought, after last week's episode with Raylan and Boyd in the mist on the mountainside, so beautifully photographed, that in the end Raylan would NOT kill Boyd. I'm so glad he didn't. So glad they all survived. The shoot out scared me too, but in the end, it all made sense and that was the end of "the hat." Also felt that the more important thing about getting to Miami was that Raylan would be in Willa's life. And they will both be better people due to this relationship. Not totally surprised that Winona and Raylan were not together...I think it is kind of amusing to read peoples' comments about "Richard" -"he's a dolt", "he's just like Gary", "what a jerk"... Reality is, he was on the screen for about 30 seconds tops and only two or three lines of dialog...we don't have any way to judge him, or him and Winona...but some folks want raylan&winona together so badly... Me? I would have liked to see them as a complete family, but there were so many other things to love about this finale, I can let that go...but still my favorite scene was her surprise visit to him in the motel, removing her wedding ring...I'll be watching that again. The end with Ava was so touching and her single tear when Raylan said he wasn't going to take her in...wonderful! My favorite I think was the last scene with Raylan and Boyd...Raylan really sold him that story about Ava's death and by doing so closed that door for Boyd. Watching his face was amazing when he realized Ava was gone. And the finally looks between them, so moving...I felt it was like two people who had been through a life changing trauma together...for them it was the dangerous mine, but it could have been two veterans of a war or even two partners, now estranged. I felt like there was genuine affection there for each other, even though neither would ever say that aloud...it was visible in their eyes....the photography was super. Makes me want to go watch it again. Love reading everyone's responses here. Hope these posts continue for a few more days while this is still fresh in our minds. I didn't think I could get so emotional over the end of a TV show...
