Awww...I'm going to watch it tonight. Wasn't Raylan and Boyd's first showdown in the pilot? At Ava's kitchen table?

Isn't there a Raylan book being completed by peter Leonard? Elmore was working on it when he passed and his son said he would complete it..?.that was in 2013 so maybe he just isn't able!!!! And with the show ending...could the book be tabled? Or saved til the fans hunger for new Raylan!!!!

Ripe,
I don't know if Peter was doing it or not. But I do know this. He inherited the Rylan book series from his father. Not only would Rylan dying not be "what Elmore would do", but it takes away a character for his son to right about. This has been my largest reasoning why Rylan can't die.

Elmore was mid-book and his son said he would finish it...the Raylan version we all Love!!!! Not that the older version wasn't good...just that Tim and graham created the perfect raylan. He dies and so does any future books and earnings! There could be a whole new Raylan story...just not written yet. Give them time and the creators could come up with something elmore-ish.

Was Elmore basing his new Raylan novel on the television series storyline? Or was he creating a new story and continuing the Raylan book saga because of the attention and popularity the television series garnered? I have not read any Raylan stories from Elmore since, Riding the Wrap, so I'm not sure. The book series Raylan vs. the TV series Raylan has many differences. Elmore's Raylan was around years before FX created him on screen, and he can be around a long time after Justified. I don't think the success of any future Raylan books will be determined by what happens to Raylan in the television series, because of the differences in the character life from book to screen. Boyd died in Elmore's story, but FX changed that outcome for the screen version. The same can be done for Raylan. No matter what happens on FX, I hope Elmore's son continues with Raylan, if that was his father's true wish.

The talk always was how much Elmore loved TV Raylan because of Timothy's excellent portrayal. So when timothy suggested a book it was based solely on the TV version and much of it was used in the series! It is dedicated to Graham and timothy and is very good. New one was also TV Raylan!! !

Yes, and in fact, he liked it so much he added Rachel to the story, even though she was a character created for the show. From what I remember about the new novel, he was going to insert Raylan into the story about a border patrol agent that he already had going. The lawyers weren't sure he could do that because of studio rights, but I think they had that worked out before he passed.

All,
This is going to come down to the tension between money and art. The bane of art and money has always been where tension lies.
But you have to place TO in this dynamic. If I was TO, I would want my stereotype to die and move on. Its also more fun to play being killed than not.
The real question to me as a businessman - and an appreciator of the arts - is whether TO won the battle for career or the rest of production staff was strong enough to stay true to its character. If I was TO, I wouldn't care about Rylan's character's ending. I would want it logical to pivot off of; but I wouldn't want to be typecast as the good guy in the white hat anymore.
Me thinks that $ won out. And if I was TO i would have to cave. But like James Gandolfini, TO has real moral problems playing a character he doesn't like. The only options for these stars is to have their characters die; or get to the ending as soon as possible.

But after Deadwood and that he is nearing fifty some common sense might prevail. Plus being Raylan was far more than a hero in the white hat! There were layers and layers and god he said it was six years of hard work...and fun scenes to do. If they ever revisit Raylan trust he will be far more than an actor! He grew in his art! He understands better the whole concept and brings all that forward. And lastly...his movies have done..not much to promote him and he has three who may want college. Oliver stone yahoo..but his role could not have been big...much like his last...he was great but he needs a leading role. Just being logical. He should never shut any doors!!!!!!

I have seen the real TO behind the mask of being the hero on Deadwood and Justified,
His most amazing traits are (a) he quickly realized that his self-control in swimming would help him in the arts, (b) he had a gift for Victorian-speaking that is not how regular people speak and (c) in his heart he is another rare family man _ I would like to think I am the same way - who works to the benefit of his family, instead of working for the sake of fame.
In interviews during Deadwood and Justified, TO never takes anything serious; I know that trait. It stems from knowing your craft and not being defined by it and using deflection.
BTW .. I was meeting with my PR company today., who just happens to be Justified freaks ... and while Larry David and Curb I think is closer to me - they painted me with the broad stroke of Rylan.
There is a lot of truth to me being TO-like and Rylan-like. But I am a pale comparison. I do know something about working and economics. But I am less TO and Rylan-like; than someone rooted in my craft and gong against the grain.
So I think this is why I am Rylan-centric. I have internalized him as the perfection of what I am. His ending is hard to let go of regardless of outcome. And his final trajectory - for good or bad - reminds me that in my real world, my methods in real life, are subject to the whims of TO/Rylan fates.

I love what you said! And I think timothy with the distance from the show and no work lined up is more pragmatic. Less critical of either Seth bullock and especially Raylan Givens!!!!! Yes raylan could be an ass but his code comes from a good soul and a driven heart! I think Yost has great respect for Elmore, timothy and even more for Raylan!!!! With all that in mind and Timothy's history with FX....we can hope for a juicy exciting role to come his way! Remember Walton got two long term gigs on that same network. Let us all hope!!!!!!

Alan Sepinwall has advised that anyone who can watch the pilot episode before the finale could be rewarded by doing so.....I'm in! This is intriguing! I just watched the pilot and now I'm thinking, what will link the beginning and the end, other than the three main characters are still with us? Will something come up to link Boyd to Jared's murder on Tate Creek Bridge? Pastor Fandi makes an appearance?
Will Raylan wear some of the old wardrobe from the pilot, that lovely pin striped suit coat from his first day on the job?
Will there be an ending scene in the restaurant in Miami where Tommy Bucks was shot...Raylan meeting Dan there, to start his new job in Miami, or having lunch there with Winona and Willa as he finally arrives in Florida!?
Does Raylan buy Gary's old house for his new family? or maybe Ava's old house as now Ava has left town for somewhere on her list of places to go and Boyd is in jail, finally?
Was it all a dream, ala "Dallas", and we are back in the pilot final scene and Boyd really does die when Raylan shoots him?
Something to do with Dewey, I hope, as Boyd is arrested for his murder?
Does Raylan show us the "angriest man" Winona spoke of, in his final dealings with both Ava and Boyd?
Will they all be sitting down (again) for Ava's chicken dinner when the scene goes black? and done??
The pilot was so full of great scenes...The writers have continued to surprise and impress me throughout and for the most part I have never been disappointed in the paths they have taken...I trust they will end this with great skill, cleverness and wit and a twist or two... can't wait!
and it will all be over in 24 hours.

Someone here hit a spot...Art reminds Raylan he always taught "center mass" and that may be the biggest hint? Raylan wearing that trench does it for me....actually in the previews he has the same clothes as episode twelve! Guess they saved money at the end!!! I want Boyd to come up short for the murder of Dewey tho haven't got a clue how they will get there! Gosh I will miss this show too much! Seems like just yesterday I watched an actor saunter into a pool area...and was hooked on timothy olyphant and of course Raylan Givens!!!!!

I just re-watched the Pilot for fun and was struck at how both Devil and Dewey (not the mention Jerrod) are all gone . . . at the hands of Boyd. Boyd is alone and doesn't have his hired guns to do his dirty work for him anymore. He's killed them all. Or given them up to arrest.

Obviously I should have included Devil and Dewey, now history at Boyd's hand...and you're right- he is alone now, no one left to do his bidding, Carl, Jimmy, Johnny...(and who knows that he killed 4 of them himself?) ( and last week, attempted murder of Constable Bob, and killing the truck driver.) He really has no one to turn to... Also I liked the comment about Art asking Raylan, didn't you teach those recruits to aim for the heart? maybe it will be echoed tonight? And Ava's comment, why did you say you're sorry? after Raylan shot Boyd. (She said she was sorry, right before she shot Boyd.) And of course, "you make me pull, I'll put you down."
