I watched the pilot last night and it made me sad. Can't say by watching it I've come to any conclusions on the final showdown tonight. I still think there will be a couple of surprises. During the Paley Center event, Timothy responded to a reporter's question about happy endings. He said he likes them, but he's not sure that's what they'll be giving us tonight. (Not verbatim) Video link below. So, with that reality in mind, I'll talk to y'all on the other side of Justified. Sh*t, can't believe it will be over after tonight... www.tvfanatic.com/videos/timothy-olyphant-talks-end-of-justified/

I just re-watched the Pilot for fun and was struck at how both Devil and Dewey (not the mention Jerrod) are all gone . . . at the hands of Boyd. Boyd is alone and doesn't have his hired guns to do his dirty work for him anymore. He's killed them all. Or given them up to arrest. Whoops! Obviously I should have included Devil and Dewey, now history at Boyd's hand...and you're right- he is alone now, no one left to do his bidding, Carl, Jimmy, Johnny...(and who knows that he killed 4 of them himself?) He really has no one to turn to... Also I liked the comment about Art asking Raylan, didn't you teach those recruits to aim for the heart? maybe it will be echoed tonight? And Ava's comment, why did you say you're sorry? after Raylan shot Boyd. (She said she was sorry, right before she shot Boyd.) Good final observations. I'd say we're ready for tonight's episode!!

The reference to the pilot leaves so much to ponder! Could Raylan's sorry be now more about if he put boyd down then so many lives would have been spared? The pilot for many of us was the start of a great ride...I for one hate that the ride is ending! Love the remark made by Yost...he has to remind Walton that in fact Boyd is the bad guy!!! He also said show was most about Raylan's soul and from the start...that Raylan Givens was the coolest character on TV. Can't argue with that!!!!!!

First they are raving with no spoilers but reviews as one of the best TV drama finales! Congrats to one and all at Justified! You set out to make a wonderful show and you did so much more!
And the hint from the pilot....you make me pull, I'll put you down! Welcome our beloved Raylan!

Hi dear friends, sorry I bugged out on you all for a while. I've been terribly sick with a respiratory thing that acted like flu. Took two weeks to kick and handfuls of scripts.
Can't believe that our swan song is tonight. I want to thank you all for making this fan forum worthy of such a great show!
Ripetebook and JCEO- I did spend quite a while chatting with one of Elmore's other sons, his daughters and other family at his estate sale, Peter was not there. They are a lovely family, btw, and enjoyed me telling them about how much I enjoyed his lectures. The son I spoke the most with said they would like to see Peter finish the book, for what it is worth.

It has been truly an honor to be part of the old FX/Unsupported forum. As not only a social media newbie; but an inferior gender amongst the superior gender, I will always remember being a small part of something great. I want to thank WKW for finding me on another forum - www.tv.com - and inviting me back. I am sure we will have a few days of postmortem. But I would be remiss - even though there is universe of people that really don't know me - and would mistake my life, as richer than it is - to misunderstand a debt to this show and people who I have interacted with. Good or bad, and even after the postmortem input, I will miss something larger than this show. I will miss all of you. With nothing less than love in the truest sense, JC

Motor, Thanks for you input. And thanks for your dedication. Our bond is something that is unique. We saw a level of brilliance, where others passed it off as less than. I truly believe when the last 15 years of the "golden era of TV"is studied and reviewed: Justified will be in the top 5 of this time period Anyone can latch on to what is in vogue. The special are the rare people that not only can see through this subterfuge - about 2 million viewers - but the ones who never let the "torch" become extinguished!! JC

I love how even before it airs critics in unison are raving about how good no....make that great the finale is and saying glowing things mostly about how brilliant timothy is! His role required such subtlety and he excelled. That is by no means a lesser remark for the of the cast...just there have been times his talent was overlooked for the wild skills of Walton playing Boyd! Now if the Emmy folk will just get on board! After two sterling series(both were rated in top ten) timothy needs to be recognized to push his employability!
And I will miss you all more than words will ever...I will come back just to hopefully read a post or ten from you all!

Omg it was incredible! I screamed when Raylan went down...and when Loretta stopped boon from finishing the kill! The only time jump was perfection! Raylan as a father was priceless! His bond ending with Tim and mostly Art blew me away! And the 51/49 failed!!!! But the scenes with Ava after the jump had me in tears...and his reunion with Boyd...omg I loved this finale! And the hat...omg it was a tribute to Elmore and the hat he chose. How will we ever live without them all? Boyd is alive and could they maybe have a movie someday down the road? They never found the Money!!!!!!! Right? Be back for so much more!!!!

GIANT SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!
If you haven't watched the final episode yet, don't read any further!!!
*************************************************************************************
Well, I am dang mad!!! After all my years of supporting Winona against all comers, She goes and marries some damn dork again and leaves Raylan alone with visitation rights!!!! Crap, girl!! You gave him that big talk about doing what he needed to do in life and then, when he does, you leave him for a shoe salesman or whatever!!!! Or maybe I should be mad at Graham Yost, or whoever "made" you do that!! Have you gotten the idea that I'm upset???
P.S. The rest of the final was AWESOME, however!

Loved the end scene with Raylan protecting Ava. Those close ups of Tim and Walt hark en back to several scenes at "the prison" where the DP shot them beautifully in close up.
I'm not liking that they married Winona off to another dolt; but Wkw reminded me that is the way Elmore wrote it, but Come On....they could have left it vaporous for us to decide, couldn't they give the shippers a break? Both Jon and I gnarled aloud "Nooooo...they didn't make it?". Tim was very Un-Raylan there for a minute in that scene, probably because he is just more natural around children, maybe?
The flash forward as a dramatic tool really surprised me, especially for a piece such as Justified with very little time lapse over 5 years. It was a bit startling; out of place if you will. I really don't like those in your face notifications. We could have figured out it was a few yeas later by the kid.
One thing is certain, the Justified audience is smarter than the average viewer, so we don't need things spelled out as such. I felt this season did over do it in a couple of places with such things, for instance introducing Loretta's great aunt only to kill her off just to underscore that Boone and Markham are bad guys. Same with Boyd killing the hostage.
Little Boyd. They should have had the kid talking and talking and talking. Not sure, but is there any possibility that was Walton's little boy?
Ava was supposed to be a babysitter and a horse groom? Come on, Duffy must have left her some cash, no?
Couple of things...why wouldn't all the other LEOs on the case just re-arrest Raylan after Art gave him his shield back? Does that make sense?
Raylan coming up against a guy like him from KSP was funny.
I like the little flash in of Ella May ( she looks rested from her sleep number bed commercials!) and Limehouse, and Duffy.
Wynn Duffy Adventures to come, maybe? If so, it just won't be the same without Jonathan Kowalski as Mike at his side.
Yes, the black hat is the tip to Elmore, 'ripetebook, this season was full of those, and they were all clever.
I feel like I've just moved away from my neighborhood. I will miss these characters so much. I love them one and all- good bad and in between.
And you all here in the forum as well.

Winona gave it 50/50 and let's be honest...that woman has dumped him so many times he should have expected it! Did catch that he still loves her look!!! And having Willa will forever keep them tied together.
I loved this episode so much. Loved the jump! And loved that Raylan is the man he was meant to be...he could not kill Boyd. That they all left Harlan alive!!!! Their individual stories were wonderful.
Do wonder if Raylan has a lady in Miami...he is a free man! Almost thought...if not for Willa would he have stayed with Ava?
And best.....they dug coal...seriously the best show ever!!!!!!!!!!!

Small disappointment that it was not an intact family group at the end, but it was ok, that's life. He's in his child's life and that was what he wanted. Loved so much that none of the three got killed, but I was very fearful during the Boon shootout, hated seeing Raylan fall. More tomorrow... Have to say this group has made watching so much fun and I hope we can continue in some form...love reading your posts!

Having watched re-watched the Pilot and having to wait for the finale to come up on Amazon (it's been coming up later than usual), I am spoiled on the body count because I need to sleep tonight! (Thank you, WKW99! Many, many thanks!) I'm happy with the body count. Exactly what I wanted. I will watch the ep tomorrow when it's available. Can't wait!

All,
More to come. I stayed awake working until I could download it from iTunes.
There are three things I have been consistent preaching. The first, is the show, at its heart, was a story of a flawed hero, returning to confront his childhood demons and leaving a better person. That is what happened.
The second is Justified, like Fargo, defines "justice" from a regional perspective, albeit stereotyped, Justice always was metered out consistently. And so it was in the finale.
And the third was - the final season had to push the viewer, as long as possible, to believe Rylan might not leave Harlan alive. But it was always obvious misdirection. And Rylan had to live at the end because (a) it was justified and (b) it's what Elmore would do.
Having said all that, I met with some Justified fans yesterday while doing business. We all agreed there was too many plot lines to close in 45 minutes. Our fear was not enough Rylan time. Instead what we got was plot lines finished in a hurry and a quasi-Dexter time jump.
I could tolerate the time jump. But why take us down all the way to Florida, only to see Rylan lost Winona to a douche bag. Justified may miss when it comes to plot lines, but it doesn't miss characters and forgot what they say. Winona said "she was tired of pretending she could ever love someone other than Rylan". Not only did she defy her character arc; but she falls for another domesticated guy that is the exact opposite of Rylan.
I maybe I can understand it. But I don't - for the love of god, money and a guest appearance - understand why - if Rylan wins - why not just give us the whole package Rylan has been chasing for? What was gained?
Yes, Justified's viewers are the smartest viewers on TV. We could have easily let the other plot lines end without being rushed, lived without the time jump, and inferred everything from the climax of the finale. Rylan not shooting but arresting Boyd. That was the time - and it could have been at the 45 minutes mark - when Justified faded to black
My love to everyone JC

Wow. First off, I went to bed last night without posting, and I am posting this morning without reading any of your posts, or any reviews to get my raw, albeit slept on, feelings. First of all, the entire plotting of this episode was brilliant. From Raylan's encounter with a deputy who acted just like him, to the ending face-off of Raylan and Boyd, well, it was damn near perfect. Things I loved: Art rescuing Raylan and giving him back his badge and gun. Boyd's frustration at the cabin and the laugh when he realized what he'd dug up. Ava's desperation and her quick-thinking when it's Boyd on the phone instead of Zachariah. The non-shoot out with Boyd, where Raylan finally lets go of all of it. The real shoot-out with Boon, that ended just the way I said it would (rest in peace, Raylan's hat) I especially loved Loretta's slow walk over, fearing what she might find, and Raylan's stunned look when he realizes he left the keys in the ignition and Ava is gone. I loved the final moments in Art's office, and Raylan's typically subdued farewells to his co-workers. (Need to check out the book he threw at Tim.) Loved the ice-cream scene with Willa. Loved Ava coming to the door, just like in the pilot. And Ava's surprise....whoa. Plus Raylan's decision. I'm happy to say that it looks like JCEO had it right. Truly a hero. Things I can (surprisingly!) live with: Raylan didn't get a completely happy ending. He and Winona didn't make it ( this time ). I'm honestly not surprised. I think they both went in with eyes wide-open and it just didn't work. Who left who? We can assume it was her, but probably only because she's done it before. Maybe it was a mutual mature decision on both their parts. I'd like to think so. What I DO know is why they did it. Yes, I know. LOL. TO got his line. I remember an interview, not long after the end of S2 when the Winona-bashing on the internet was in full-force and everyone HATED the idea of Raylan as a daddy (well, almost everyone ). He was asked a questioned about it and said that there was a line he loved in one of Elmore's books where Winona's husband called one of their boys (in the novels they have two boys) 'Punk'. Raylan's line was exactly what TO said last night, only in the books he got into it with Gary (I think that was the guy's name in the books, too). So....especially thanks to LJ's wonderful behind the scenes info, I can picture TO in the writer's room saying "Why don't we...." So, don't blame Winona, blame Timothy, or Elmore, since he broke them up in the books. What I love the very most: They left it open. SO much story left to be told. Here's hoping someday we get to see them tell it. Now I am going to go back and feast on all of your thoughts and opinions. Edited to add Graham Yost's comments about R&W And a link to the complete interview. Warning....I am crying now. www.yahoo.com/tv/justified-series-finale-recap-postmortem-116400767380.html

I, too, just watched it on iTunes. Sheesh. It's still not available yet on Amazon. I LOVED it. I'm so happy that Raylan made it out of Harlan alive. And Boyd and Ava? That's icing on the cake. Kind of bummed that Raylan and Winona didn't make their long odds given even by themselves. They didn't make it in Elmore's books, either. Still, they had a good final scene, very reminiscent of the Pilot. Willa and Raylan are adorable. And I like this new guy much better than Gary. It goes to show that people really don't change that much. Also noticed they were playing Raylan and Winona's theme at the end scene with Raylan and Boyd. LOL I've watched that hot Raylan and Winona scene so many times, it seemed a little out of place for that reason alone. I do like the music though. Loretta was awesome! Markham's demise was gross. Boone went down about the way I expected. Is that Boone's business man's Stetson that Raylan now wears? Again, high on his head? Not enough Tim and Rachel. Guess we can't have it all in an hour long episode. Art and Raylan's scenes were awesome. And of course, I was happy Raylan gave Ava a pass. Funny to think that if things had been very different, little Zachariah and Willa could have be playmates. I loved Raylan could relate to Ava and Zachariah on that parental/childhood level. New for them. It was cool to see Ellen May and Limehouse in passing. I busted up laughing out loud at Duffy's Dog Van. The episode should get an Emmy just as Always (also the series finale) did for FNL's. Always also did a time jump to show where the characters were. It was also hopeful. I like hopeful. The Promise is the perfect bookend to the Pilot, which I did re-watch last night and am glad I did. Love it. But also sad it's over.

WKW, Although I felt (a) Markham's demise was rushed. (b) god know's how Boyd got out of the hills and choppers/dogs in the "impossible to navigate hills", (c) how he found Markham in a weed drying shack and (d) how did he get a car ... Markham getting hit in one eye goes back to his first scene with his love Katherine. She say's how about an eye. Markham says, hell someone could still get a drivers license with one eye. Fitting he was taken down by one-eye. No drivers license applicable now. JC

My dear friends,
After watching last night's final episode, I was totally gobsmacked. It was everything I had hoped it would be. This morning when I woke up, I tried reading the paper, but my eyes kept filling up. I will miss this show terribly... the wondering, the anticipation of what would happen next. And I will miss this incredible bond with all of you.
I have just a few comments...maybe more later. Right now I have a huge packet of things to go through for a church committee that I have to present on Sunday night. (It would be hard for Ava and Zachariah to drag this sucker up the mountain, suffice it to say. So time is limited until I do that.)
Boyd. He is where he needs to be. At one point last season, I decided that I wanted him dead, but I came to the realization that this is his best (or worst) punishment. He has lost the things that he so desperately wanted and that turned him into a criminal in the first place...money and power. He's back where he was shortly after we met him, wearing the orange jumpsuit and preaching to the equally lost. I loved the final scene with him and Raylan. Whether they were friends or mortal adversaries, it all boiled down to the fact that they "dug coal together." Underneath all the sturm and drang, there was that bond.
Ava. She made some really bad choices, many of which were bound up in the fact that she had aligned herself with the wrong men and the fact that she lacked the self-confidence to be on her own. All it took was the "right man" for her to try and turn herself around... that little man being her son. She loves him more than anything. I think Raylan made the right choice here. He sees that she is being a good parent, providing for and protecting her son. He is now protecting them. He knows what being a parent means. It seems to have made both of them better people.
Raylan. How many times have we despaired of him becoming a whole human being? Given his background, a lot of us didn't see it happening. He'll probably remain a tough marshal when he has to be, and he'll probably always have that sardonic, smart-mouthed wit about him, but now he, like Ava, has a child that he loves more than anything else. She's bright and beautiful, she loves her daddy and she has him wrapped around her little finger. That can really change a person. Raylan will probably always be a little "outside of the box." It's what makes him so darn cool. He's one of my favorite characters of all time. As for him and Winona, I never saw it working out long term, but I knew that in their own ways they loved each other, so I tried to convince myself it was going to happen. I always envisioned the last scene as showing Raylan knocking on her door in Florida. Which brings me to.........
Elmore Leonard. Rest in peace, sir. This series was based on YOUR character and the writers seem to have made you happy with the way they wrote him and with the marvelous way Timothy played him. This is the best tribute that can be paid to a writer and you deserved it. As much as I loved that Stetson, in the end Raylan got the hat you wanted for him. Bravo!
