mare and wkw, have a happy birthday. I hope the coming year will be good for both of you. At my age, I sometimes don't even realize I'm having another birthday! (Mine is the 25th.) My son and daughter-in-law brought me a copy of The Girl on the Train, which I have been dying to read, and a photo album of their wedding ceremony which is really beautiful. We had a simple pizza and salad dinner and a chance to catch up. One of the joys of each year is being able to talk and share with all of you. Many blessings to all of you!

Episode 10:
Silas Adams arrives in Deadwood with a letter for Al from the corrupt officials in Yankton. Al is visibly distressed; the officials probably want far more money than Al had planned to pay. Wu comes to see Al, too.
The men who act as drug runners for Wu have evidently tried to pull a fast one, keeping the opium for themselves. Al says he will get to the bottom of it, as one of the men works for him. (The other works for Cy.) Later, he tells Wu that he has located them and will get rid of them.
As mare mentioned, the Rev has taken a liking to the new piano at Al's. At first, Al isn't too bothered, but ever the businessman, he tells him to come only during the off hours. Sadly, the Rev's memory is failing and he returns. This time Al isn't kind and kicks him out.
Joanie and Charlie seem to have a new friendship going. And Eddie offers to bankroll Joanie's new business by robbing Cy. (Some of the people in Deadwood REALLY like living dangerously.)
Al invites Adams to the bath house and in short order drowns the man who worked for him. He will let Cy take care of his own man. So much for trying to impress the men from Yankton that Deadwood is a semi- respectable place. Interestingly, Adams doesn't seem all that disturbed about Al's behavior.
In mare's post, she talks about the Rev's visit to Sol and Seth. They are very gentle with him and offer to walk him home. There is also a wonderful moment between Sol and Seth. Seth is questioning his new life...how it's not really better than what he left, how it's made him irritable, and he is facing the new consequence of having taken on a wife and son that he hardly knows. Sol says, "If there's a heaven, your brother sees what you did and is grateful." Seth replies, "Maybe he sees me borrowing his life so I didn't have to live my own." Sol says, "People have made good lives after borrowed ones before." I loved these two scenes. They made up for the rest of the episode which was not one of my favorites otherwise. We generally see Deadwood as lacking in humanity, but there are moments when thoughtful and basically good people do and say kind and helpful things.
I won't be able to get to episode 11 for a few days, but good stuff is coming!

This site and you all have given me many happy hours over the last years...I hope TO keeps on working, this site continues to follow his career and we all go on and on as fans.

Aw man, I'm the one who started this thing and now I'm the one who abandoned y'all with it! I can't believe it, I'm so sorry. I have a number of deadlines coming up, so I'm working hard and when I get around to relaxing, I usually don't have the stomach for Deadwood and I look for something light. Didn't see that coming! Nevertheless I do enjoy reading your comments when they appear. I guess it's up to you whether you want to continue the rewatch post season 1, or whether we all want to take an indefinite break. I definitely want to continue rewatching as soon as I have the time (and nerves), but I don't know when I will get around to it.
A belated happy birthday to all the birthday girls!

Deadwood is excellent. Justified is equally excellent. To be honest the new season of network TV sucks. Liked Blood and Oil. Quantico was harder to follow but good. Basically they all don't hold up against Justified. Cable beats network. But missing gems like Justified. That is my rant.

I'm sorry to hear your news, but I get it. Well, Monday...I think you and I are the only ones participating...we are just short of finishing Season one... Looks kind of daunting to get to two more full seasons of commentary if it's just you and I... I understand completely why squeegee needs to take a break...life happens. When she started this, it seemed totally doable with a lot of interest...but I think that changed for many people. For myself, I like to keep in contact with you all...but it doesn't HAVE to be by reviewing "Deadwood"... I check this site often, whether I am offering comments or not...always with the hope of more TO news and/or photos... What do you think?

Lots of us do come here and Deadwood was a way to love Timothy. I meant to tune in....just never got into it...this time! What I love here is how any news becomes quickly posted here. So we miss nothing! And that is everything. Thanks.

Funny, this summer I re-watched the whole series as well. I always appreciated the show massively, and needed something to get me through the hockey off-season, lol. Deadwood definitely did the trick. I still think TO was criminally underrated for his role in general (I blame the brilliant Ian McShane for that); every time I have watched the series, I see things I didn't notice about Bullock with previous viewings. Anyway, happy to see that there are still others around who are enjoying Deadwood, too. Maybe we'll get that movie we'd all love to see one day....

That rewatch thing applies even more to Justified. Even to date I catch nuances that I missed before. When you put Timothy and Walton in a scene..expect anything!! And you get everything!

Well, I DID watch episode 11. It didn't move the story along a whole lot. Al is still trying to deal with Silas Adams from Yankton. The sticking point seems to be an old murder charge against Al. Yankton wants a lot of money to make it go away and it looks as if Al will pay it.
Jewel goes to see Doc about a possible brace for her leg. Merrick receives the shipment of a new camera which will help to change the way news is reported in Deadwood. Ellsworth tells Alma that all of the easy gold has been mined and that she will have to spend some money to mine for more. Alma's dad shows up, and any fool can see that he is a low life. (After all, he married her off to Bram in order to pay off his debts.) The sniveling Farnum sees right through him. It takes a con to spot a con.
Tom Nuttal asks Al to appoint Con Stapleton as sheriff. Con has promised favors in return. Seth's head is exploding over this. Trixie makes Sol an offer he can't refuse, but when Al finds out he tells Sol to pay up for Trixie's favors. Plus, Seth catches them in the act.
The Reverend wanders the streets, preaching to men and animals alike. Al talks about "getting rid of him." We see a glimpse of Al's past when he talks about how his mother abandoned him to a horrible situation at an "orphanage." It helps maybe to explain why he is the way he is.
This pretty much sums up the episode. If anyone else watched it, (mare?) please contribute. This is my third time though. I, too, continue to see things that I missed before.I think it's worth the re-watch for this reason alone, but if you ladies want to give it up, I'll understand. My life seems to go from one disaster to another lately. When you live alone and have no family nearby, life gets to be a constant search for people who can help you. I don't get half of the things done that I should. So...in the evenings I tend to escape. Just finished the first three seasons of Call the Midwife that were loaned to me by a friend. I wasn't sure that it would be my "cup of tea", but it is beautifully acted and written, based on the work of a midwife in the poor east end of London in the late fifties. Hope to be able to see season 4 at some point.
Let me know what you want to do about Deadwood. I'll probably watch it all regardless. Tim is so good in this role. Seth is a very complicated man...more so than I had originally thought.

I would just as soon continue, even if it's just you and I...I watched it too and will write about it later tonight or tomorrow. I get it about the escaping...I tend to be over scheduled with family responsibilities...watching Deadwood (and other TO films/shows) is my "just for me time". I plan on watching the midwives show too. Also just watched the 4th season of Longmire on Netflix...loved it, not as much as Justified, but it was well done. More later....

Finally got to watch Ep 11... Al is giving us some background about his crime in Chicago and a warrant...Jewel visits the Doc to ask him for help with her leg...I liked their scene together. Jewel's story was a nice addition to the narrative...showing Al may pretend to be heartless, but his bringing Jewel to Deadwood is a sort of protection for her. Ellsworth is somewhat enamored of Alma, as her employee, he enjoys their morning meetings, but tells her, he knows he's too old for her...their talk is interrupted by the arrival of Alma's father...we agree about him, we know immediately he is there because of the gold strike and how can he get his hands on it...? Andy is back and searching for a chance to do good, he meets with the Rev who tells him God will help him...the minister is slowly falling apart, sad to see... Al and Adams are making an arrangement concerning the payoffs to the Magistrate and Al's warrant. Adams tells him, only the Magistrate knows about the warrant, hoping to "earn" off it. Charlie as fire marshal warns Tom Nutley about the danger in his bar...Tom does not like this intrusion...loved Charle's response..."I'm Charlie Utter that attended the same fu**ing meeting that you did"...and, "this ain't the goddamn day of judgement Tom.." Tom and Con conspire to name Con as sheriff...Tom's attempt to have a friendly face among the leadership...if Al will ok it...We are reminded that the camp is only 2 months old...(from nothing, to 10,000 people in that short a time due to the gold strike...) Loved Trixie's visit to Sol...and Seth's intrusion and quick recovery...just stopped in for this tool...should I lock up? Oh yes! EB swears in Con as sheriff in a comical scene...Seth arrives just after and is pissed off that this guy became the sheriff...must see Al. Seth bitches to Al about this and Al ends up telling him...you would make a fine sheriff, if you said to me, do this and do that, I'd consider it, cause your not a f**king whore...you think the law can be honest...Seth: I don't want it. Al: Well I do lots of things I don't want to do. Seth: You think you're the only one? (love this exchange.) Then, too bad for Sol, Seth lets the cat out of the bag and Al finds out that Trixie is with Sol...Oh dear. Al confronts Sol and tells him he must pay or Trixie will...no way out. Al is pissed and tells Trixie she sleeps with her own tonight... Seth has dinner with Alma, Sophia and Alma's father...served by EB and Richardson... Seth discovers that Mr. Russell is a dirtbag, now he has another reason to be angry. Doc works on a brace for Jewel, hoping to help and not harm her. Still don't see any women in Deadwood besides the whores, and Alma... Nice scene with Seth and Sol...Seth apologizes for letting Al know what happened with Trixie... Al rants and torments a new whore while he tells her his stories...about the orphanage...enough of that for me... Not my favorite episode but I liked a few lines and scenes...noted above. Will try to get to comments on #12 in a couple days... Hope to hear from others. Also, very much enjoying the comments on the favorite Boyd/Raylan scenes, there are so many great ones...Thanks to all!

I may be joining you. A Comcast worker stole some meds from my bathroom and they are checking it out. They said I will be compensated...HBO for several months is my hope. I feel very violated...heck I let him use my bathroom while I had my back turned. It was my pain meds from the fall/rehab sessions. So if so I will catch up....and try to focus on all not just Seth Bullock!!!!!!

I'll try to watch tonight. Don't know how that will work out. My oldest son was in the Baltimore area for an art convention, so he escaped the weather down there, but has to drive back after the convention closes this evening to Wilmington, NC. They don't seem to have had the devastation that SC has had, but it will be dark and rainy and hard to see the road dangers. It is always so good to see him, and he and my youngest and his wife and I went out for dinner and had a lot of fun. Now the worry begins. They're always your children.
Speaking of the weather, if any of you are in the storm's path, it isn't over yet in some places. I lucked out. After a week of rain, we are finally coming out of it. More rain would have been a real problem. I hope you will be safe.

Just checking in for a little bit of Deadwood cast trivia.
I'm watching the show Raising Hope right now (one ep a day, something light to wind down), which you might know Garret Dillahunt was on. In season three there's an episode where his character is at the hospital. When he wakes from aenesthesia he makes the "Jack McCall" face (aka the droopy eye) and then says "Well, that's one in a row for you, Wild Bill". It happened so fast I hardly had time to react, but I've been laughing about it ever since. I don't remember which episode it was, but if anyone's interested I can look it up.
This show has a lot of meta jokes and references to all the actors.

mare, thanks for your good wishes. It was fine in my neck of the woods. My son and his friend who had traveled with him to Baltimore ended up coming back to my house on Sunday night. I was very relieved! Their trip back to Wilmington was pretty uneventful. He said Google re-routed them a few times, but they made it home safely. Wilmington had some problems, but not nearly what people experienced in SC.
I have been experiencing medication issues, even after a change in antibiotics, so I have not watched Deadwood yet. Will report in when I do.

mare, I am so behind...trying to finish my yard work, too, but have been very under the weather. The man who helps me close my pond for the winter is coming this week and I have to cut back a few more plants so that we can put up the leaf netting.
I am anxious to watch episode 12, but have gotten involved with a few of the returning shows and also playing catch up with the ones I've missed. I'm thinking that tomorrow night might be a chance for Deadwood!
