mare, I'm almost done, except for some pruning. It was in the nineties here for most of last week, and very humid, so I didn't get a lick done. It's nice to sit in the air conditioning for a while and watch Deadwood! The next few days are supposed to be better. Hope to get out and do a few things. Thanks for your kind words. Hope you are well. I'll be watching the next episode soon.

It's nice to sit in the air conditioning for a while and watch Deadwood! The next few days are supposed to be better. Hope to get out and do a few things. Thanks for your kind words. Hope you are well. I'll be watching the next episode soon. I'm good, thanks. Now to episode 7, Loved the opening scene of Bullock and Charlie finding McCall...and what they chose to do with him. The story of Flora and Miles didn't grab me, but I guess it served a story line for Dan and also for Cy/Joannie/Eddie... Jane's nursing helped Andy and others to beat the smallpox, Alma beat the drug and is burying her husband. Trixie is in trouble with Al, Farnum is greedily lusting after his "share" of the gold claim, but the best thing is- Bullock is back in town. Now we finally have a real conversation between Alma and Seth. It is mentioned that 10 days have passed since Trixie started to "feed" dope to the widow. I guess Bullock was gone for a couple of weeks? Alma has broken the spell of the drug and Seth has faced death and survived, plus he got his man and delivered him to justice. They both comment on the change in the other and Alma is very interested in him. Seth is at his most talkative and friendly in this scene with Alma. We don't know Seth's intentions yet, isn't he wearing a wedding ring, during all of this? Charlie has a touching scene with Tom Nutley, hearing about Bill's demise. Don't want to comment much about the Flora/ Miles/Dan/ Joannie/Cy story. Favorite scenes Bullock telling Sol about fighting the Indian. Bullock confronting Al about Mrs. Garrett's claim. Jane and Charlie "talking" to Bill at the cemetery. Sol and Charlie at the Hardware store, thanks for saving my friend. Trixie telling Alma to take the child away... Favorite lines We're Bill's friends, I'm Seth Bullock. I'm Charlie Utter. I liked most of this episode, for the Seth parts mostly. You know what I mean. Hope to hear from all who are interested. I'm enjoying this re-watching.

I watched tonight. A lot of my "take aways" mirror mare's:
On the way back to Deadwood, Seth and Charlie stop at a camp and, seeing McCall's horse, they inquire about him and find him at the bar. Where else? They capture him and take him to Yankton for trial. They could have just taken him off somewhere and shot him, but once again Seth makes the right choice.
Al and Farnum spar over E.B.'s share of the sale of the Garrett claim. E.B.is such a greedy creep; he actually has the gall to approach the widow Garrett about the sale at her husband's funeral.
The Anderson kids, Miles and Flora (played by a young Kristen Bell) show up in Deadwood, supposedly looking for their father. I'm slow on the uptake sometimes, but on watching the show the first time, I suspected right away that they were grifters.
Seth and Alma have a talk about her claim. They finally agree that he will continue to handle her affairs. We're seeing the first signs of a mutual attraction. Seth goes to Al for help in finding someone to survey the claim and tells him outright that if there is anything shady done in relation to the claim, he will hold Al personally responsible. Seth shows some major backbone here. Love it!
Sol and Trixie get closer. Alma plays matchmaker. Trixie is between a rock and a hard place here. She calms Al's anger over the drug situation with Alma and stays away from the Gem by suggesting that she be his snitch as to what is going on with Alma's claim. But she tells Alma what she is doing AND also tells Sol that she will look over the hardware store's books. This will infuriate Al if and when he finds out.He considers her his property, but Trixie is starting to have other ideas. She is just going to have to walk a very fine line here.
We see Seth getting very introspective about his dealings with the Indian and why the Indian might have attacked him. He has a way of looking at both sides of a situation and understanding his adversary. This will stand him in good stead when he becomes sheriff.
Charlie goes to Tom Nuttall's and gets the lowdown on Bill's death ( and some dramatic embellishment from one of the patrons.) Later Charlie comes upon Jane talking to Bill at Bill's grave. He joins her, and of course, they argue as usual, but Charlie ends up talking to Bill, too. Charlie and Jane really do care about each other. It was a very tender scene.
Creamd recovers from smallpox and is given a clean bill of health, just as another man dies. They need that vaccine pronto. The Reverend is helping at the make-shift hospital as well and suffers another seizure. Someone here mentioned epilepsy, but I was remembering that he might have a brain tumor. Doc says he thinks it is a lesion on his brain. Whatever it is, we know that hard times are coming for him as the problem worsens.
I liked this episode. Lots of character development and lots of people showing what they're really made of.

You guys, the last weeks have been crazy but I finally managed to catch up. I enjoyed all your comments and I'm glad that the thread didn't die without me ... I don't really have anything to add at the moment, but I want to say that I agree about the teeth. Bullock's teeth are WAY to good. I mean they did go to some effort to make some characters' teeth period appropriately bad and then others just have normal teeth (people do have different quality teeth). But TO's Hollywood teeth are just ... no. That's definitely on minus point on the realism front for Deadwood

For Deadwood episode 8 Starts by Farnum describing his plan for he and Al to murder Bullock and the widow, in order to fake a bill of sale for the claim...interrupted by the arrival of the vaccine and news of a treaty with "the heathens"... Per Al, Bullock is the perfect front man for the coming changes... Flora is scamming Joannie, making plans, the vaccine is handed out at the hardware store to all the hoople heads, now Alma says she is leaving and will sell, Seth takes charge and tells her he will have the claim assayed and then they will talk. Trixie tries to kill herself, Doc finds her in time. Will she go with Alma and child? Gold is found by Ellsworth, Dan and Seth, changing everything for Alma. Farnum is speechless. It's a Bonanza Alma tells him. Nice scene with Al and Bullock as Seth announces the find. Seth and Alma talk, now she wants to stay. Trixie returns to the Gem. Why does she return to Al? Seems like a chance to change her life, with Alma and the child. Why is Seth being so charming to Alma, knowing he is thinking about his wife and child coming soon?. "Pretty soon we'll have laws here and every other damn thing." Didn't care for any of the story about Flora/Miles/Cy/Joannie/Eddie. Very brutal and hard to watch. Favorite scene Al and Seth in the saloon with the saddlebag full of gold. Alma and Seth in line for the vaccine. Sophia saying her name. The next episode should be a good one....

mare, I haven't watched yet, sadly. But your comments ring true as far as memory serves me. I will probably have a chance to watch tonight. I recall being shocked by some of the things you mentioned when I watched for the first time. Now I just think "Well, it's Deadwood."

I recall being shocked by some of the things you mentioned when I watched for the first time. Now I just think "Well, it's Deadwood." I agree, I think the message is just that life is cheap there and with no law, anything can happen. I just watched Episode 9 and I have to say, all I really wanted to see was the scene of Seth and Alma meeting in her room and the comments made about him writing to his wife and then introducing the subject of his brother's death. Now we know a lot more about Seth, He is more complicated than we knew so far. A family, but not his own, his brother's. An honorable man who does the best he can to take care of his brother's family, but is also now having feelings of his own for another woman. Presumably he has been alone for a long time and now everything is happening fast... And Alma's composure slipping after he leaves the room, she is breathless at her encounter with Seth... By far the most interesting part of Ep 9, for me. I remember how exciting this scene was upon first viewing...(and could he look any more appealing?)

Am I too late for ep. 8? I had a really busy week!
A few things mare did not touch upon:
Alma gave Trixie an out. She could go to NY and help with Sophia. (Doc also suggested this to Trixie after she almost killed herself.) Doc and Alma come to realize that it is just too much of a jump for Trixie to make. When Alma's claim pays off she gives Trixie a huge chunk of gold, again trying to get Trixie to make a change in her life. She takes it and returns to Al at the gem. She places it on his night table and crawls in bed with him, but turns her back to him. She is sending him a message without saying a word.
Another change in a relationship is when Joanie and Cy are on the balcony at the end of the episode. He has once again degraded her beyond belief by making her murder Flora. He expresses what seem like feelings of adoration for her, even offering her her own business. She ends up telling him that he will have to let her go or kill her. Otherwise, she will end up killing him. The women are drawing a line with the men who "own" them.
Even though there was some brutality in this episode that was hard to watch, I still liked it very much. Plus watching Jane and Doc work together is always hilarious.
Favorite quotes: E.B. tries to convince Al that they should kill Alma and Seth and doctor the papers to say that they own the claim. He says, "When boldness is called for, bold men don't shrink." (Of course he volunteers others to do the dirty work. He will just aid and abet and not implicate himself. Creepy as ever.
When the riders come back with the vaccine and news that the threat of the Indians is over, Al tells E.B. to pay the men. One of the riders says, "God bless you!! Al replies, "Not likely, but my short term prospects have improved."

Loved your comments and Loved those quotes you mentioned and the two observations about the whore/pimp relationships. It's complicated.

Okay. Episode 9.
The opportunity arises for Deadwood to be annexed as a treaty with the Indians has been reached. Al wants to set up a type of government to make Deadwood look more established and respectable. There is another meeting (with more fruit) and several town members take positions, although they find them rather ludicrous. The only one letting his position go to his head is E.B., who has decided that he will be Mayor Farnum.
There are some good one on one discussions in this episode:
Setting out to find a place to rent for her brothel, Joanie runs into Charlie. They get along well, supporting each other in their new business ventures. Doc talks to the Reverend about his deteriorating health. Charlie and Jane, who is drinking heavily again, talk a few times, with Charlie trying to help and Jane making little sense. At one meeting, she is standing with her head against the side of a building and Charlie says, "How much are they paying you to hold that wall up." At a later meeting, she tells him she is leaving town because she can't be drunk where Bill is. Over at the Belle Ruin, Cy lights into Eddie who is depressed and disillusioned over seeing the cruel death of Miles and Flora. Cy more or less tells him to grow a pair. Seth sets up a meeting between Alma and Ellsworth so that she can judge his ability to handle her claim. Later that night he goes to her room to see how the meeting went. (Snicker.) They can't take their eyes off of each other, but after Seth tells her about his wife and son, she is visibly distressed. Seth is a truthful man, but we've all said in the past that he doesn't handle the Alma situation well at all. If he had just kept his distance he could have spared her a lot of heartache. That being said, I can't wait for the love scenes.

(I'm still stuck on episode 8, but will continue watching this weekend). Just wanted to add how over the course of the last few episodes, since Trixie started taking care of Alma and Sophia, she's really been a voice of reason and she got a ton of character development. I remember why she is one of my favourite characters (although everyone is my favourite character basically hehe). I loved how she just completely sees through Alma and tells her "fuck him and get out of here". I enjoyed the Miles and Flora episode, although their death was very distressing. It was kind of cool to see two such unassuming kids being badass and having their own agenda instead of being the clean cut innocent 'victims' everyone took them for in the beginning. Especially the girl. And did you see that there is an imdb page for the movie now? www.imdb.com/title/tt4943998/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2There's nothing on it so far and since anyone can edit imdb it doesn't really mean anything, but it kinda starts to feel "real" this way, doesn't it? I'll set up a google alert for Deadwood, so I don't miss anything

Thanks for the heads up, squeege! It looks like it's just you and mare and me re-watching Deadwood. Where is everybody? Several other members were excited about doing this. Hi- I was waiting to see if someone else would start up on Episode 10...but it's been awhile, so here goes. Following the encounter between Alma and Seth, in her room, at the end of Ep 9, I had very high hopes for the this one. But, alas no more encounters between them here... Seth is taking on the duties of the town Health Commissioner, Mister Wu is attempting to explain his loss of the dope to Al, the introduction of Silas Adams, and all that encompasses with Al and the arc of bribing the legislators. Joannie and Charlie are becoming friends. The Reverend Smith's health is deteriorating and he is loving Al's piano music. Seth and Sol chat on the porch of the Hardware Store and Sol goes to visit Trixie. The rev. Smith visits Seth and Sol, and asks them if they are his friends or disguised as devils. I love the dialog of that scene. Ray McKinnon was amazing as the reverend. Favorite scenes- the men all rising as Alma enters the dining room. Mr. Wu, entering the Gem by the front door, and his encounter with Johnny. "Sit Wu, Wu sit!" Al and Wu, " Who stole the dope Wu?" "Wu?" "No, Who?" Sol to Seth.."Do you think she's pretty?" "very." Did not enjoy watching Al deal with the dope fiends and their theft. That bathhouse scene was awful to watch. Hope to hear from others. Very much looking forward to Seth visiting Alma, soon.

mare, I was hoping someone else had watched. I had a really busy week and not enough energy to accomplish everything. My son and daughter-in-law are coming for dinner tonight---what passes for a birthday dinner for her and me. They will help me with somethings at the house, also. I will reply tomorrow and try to watch ep.11 as well!
