I don't know. The yard work doesn't end for me until October or November. Plus, some good shows come back in the fall. It's up to all of you. I'll continue to watch or wait. A friend of mine just loaned me all of Call the Midwife (to date) and I'm trying to figure when to watch that too.

Maybe you're right. There hasn't been a lot of participation. Personally I'd like to continue my rewatch, but if you think there will be more activity in the fall, maybe putting the thing on hold is smarter. Although there's no real telling if that'll be the case ... I'll probably be ready to continue whenever, so maybe some of you guys should post here when you're ready to continue and have a little bit more time on your hands. It's been a scorching hot weekend here as well, I don't always cope well with heat so I got exactly nothing done. Hope yours went better, Mare! Hey- let's just keep going, if you want to, too. Anyone can jump in whenever there is time... That way we stick to your original "schedule" I am happy to watch Ep 5 this week and post my thoughts. (Hot and humid here today, too much for yard work...I was actually working on some "Justified" themed T-shirts/night shirts...so I was having fun. Had Justified, S4, on in the background. My goodness was TO looking good...) So, let me know what you think about sticking with it?

Ok, well I certainly don't mind. I also think that there will be a little bit more "meat" to discuss once the storyline has progressed further.
I'll be watching the ep tonight then. I'm so looking forward to Seth and Alma meeting!!!

Just watched episode 5 tonight. The trial of Jack McCall was a travesty, of course. But we are informed that since Deadwood is not a part of the US that their justice system is not legal. They could get into a lot of trouble for executing McCall. Seth takes off to rectify the unfair decision of the jury, showing that vigilante justice was sometimes the only way to settle problems. Calamity Jane comes upon Andy who has been thrown out of Deadwood due to his smallpox. Robin Weigart was so wonderful in this episode, and in many to come. That she never got an Emmy was a disgrace. (Of course, I love this character.)
We get to see a very tender side of Trixie in her ministrations to the little orphan. She also wants to help Alma get past her addiction, even thought Al wants her to keep Alma on drugs for his own purposes. Farnum is fed up with Al using him, but will he be able to serve his own purposes without Al? He really is no better than Al in the long run. Both are connivers. They look out for number one, first and foremost.
Lots of adversarial relationsships are beginning to form here. Farnum/Al, Seth/ the Deadwood justice system, Joanie/Tolliver, Trixie/Al. People are tired of being used. They will put up with it for a while...some longer than others, but conflicts are brewing. The plot thickens....

This was a good one wasn't it! The most dialog we've had from Seth, in his talk with Sol after the funeral... I noticed that in the scene where Seth meets Alma, he only really says two sentences, while she sort of gushes over him and how she watched him with Wild Bill. She signs the proxy and he pockets it and there is no other interaction between them...but I think despite her situation as recent widow, she is taken with him and is sort of breathless. Thru out the whole hour, Seth is pissed off in every encounter he has, sometime bites his tongue and says nothing but sometimes lets it fly, like telling the reverend, "Can't we have some goddamn quiet on the rest of this walk." He is fighting his impulse to be the lawman he used to be and to do something about McCall who killed Hickok. He yells at the creep selling the Indian hair, at Tom Nutley, lays hands on McCall while he's tied up in the barn, at the Reverend, At Sol, even at the Doc...As Cy observes, "that man has a powerful temper." Every scene with Bullock showed us Bullock trying to control his emotion or anger at feeling he is the one who will have to act to get justice for Wild Bill. We see Jane , in her misery, start to become the caring nurse, Alma panicking at the idea of having to care for the child herself, Trixie mothering both the child and Alma...Joannie trying to assert a little independence from Cy, Al controlling even the "trial" and ultimately causing McCall to ride out of Deadwood. Bill's funeral was so sad, seeing Jane standing off to the back, Bullock seething, the Reverend in his element... Favorite dialog Al to Cy " wish we could just hit em over the head, rob em and dump em in the creek..." And Cy's response "But that would be wrong" (reminded me of the Nixon tapes during Watergate). Al to McCall "Run for your f**king life..." Seth to Sol, the whole scene at the end..."suspenders" "goddamn it" Favorite images Seth's face during the funeral. Sol's face as Seth's rides out. I enjoyed watching this one a lot. What do you all think?

I'm so sorry, I still haven't seen it! I usually watch TV on weekends, and since I wasn't sure we were going to continue I didn't watch last weekend. Tonight, I promise

Entertainment weekly is also running the story that HBO has confirmed talks. Adding credibility is, during a recent Gunslingers episode entitled 'Seth Bullock', David Milch was one of the authorities speaking on the subject of Bullock and Swearengen. I though at the time that it looked like he was trying to revive/guage the public's interest. It is hard to say where TO wouold come down on this, having been really burned by HBO, but really loving those he worked with. Keeping all my fingers and toes crossed.

I know what you mean... Remember Tim telling the story (on Conan) about finding out on the Internet that he was cast as the Lone Ranger? Funny story, not an once of truth....as Conan said, he dodged a bullet...it was a bomb. I'm trying to imagine all those actors we would want to see and the wonderful sets and man, how much money they would have to spend...If Milch and HBO want it, that's a good start.

Just read yours... I think he'll jump at the chance to have true closure for an experience he loved....politics and HBO aside....he loved who he worked with, the story and being Seth Bullock.

With it apparently being a movie (big screen?) his commitment to HBO would be short. And I agree with whoever else said he'd jump at the chance to finish the story.

Looks like we all got sidetracked by this wave of gossip about a possible Deadwood movie...I have mixed feelings...could it possibly be done as well as the original? If all our favorites were involved and Milch leading them, and the set could be re-established, because that was one of the stars, I think, and if the money could be worked out...some of these folks would be asking big bucks, I'm guessing, and some have moved on...I'd like to see it. That's a lot of "Ifs"... Anyway, anyone ready to rewatch Ep 6 and discuss??

I am surprised it will be a theatrical movie and not on HBO! I just want to see Timothy working on a worthy project.

Every thing Timothy said about how he loved the experience matches this. He loved David Milch and his off the cuff style. And ten years later makes perfect sense since it is ten years later now!!!!! Can I say gosh I hope this is one project that comes to reality.

I watched Ep6 last night, will post comment later today. Have a great day! Boy, this started out brutally with the battle of the Indian and Bullock, pretty hard to watch...loved that Charlie was the one who found him... Small Pox is coming on strong and the business community is united in fighting it by sending for vaccine and setting up a "hospital"...A meeting requires fruit, per Al. some interesting scenes between Trixie/ Alma/ child and Farnum...Jane is back and sparring with Doc, before she sets to her nursing of the sick Sol seems very interested in Trixie...The Reverend is suffering with epilepsy...Cy is an SOB...in so many ways. Favorite scenes- Bullock surviving the attack Charlie and Bullock placing the Indian in the "burial site" Jane seeing the child again Favorite line Al- As a base of operations, you cannot beat a f**king saloon. And one note, Despite being beaten, Bullock never lost a single tooth, lots of nice straight white teeth for 1876. LOL! Next time... Seth and Alma have a conversation....finally, in "Bullock returns to camp". And I just was thinking, other than Alma, and until we meet Martha in the next season, there are no women but the whores...surely there were some other women in the town...? No one came to Deadwood with their gold digging husbands, no farmer's wives or merchants wives?...no one?...later there are children for the school...just wondering.

Even better because that'll be longer than a film It really sounds like this happening is an actual possibilty! I can't believe this is starting now when I just got into this show, I was sure it was dead. I'm very excited for it, pleeeaaaaase HBO, do it!

Betting Timothy is also excited. He hated how abuptly it ended and will likely love closure....the story being the thing he feels is the true value. Wonder if after his multitasking of Justified....he could be a cheerleader/pain in the ass for Milch!!!!

mare, I agree with everything you said. I knew the fight with the Indian was coming, of course, and I couldn't stand to watch. Thank you, ff button! Seth is a man of honor and wanted to provide the Indian with a proper burial even though the guy almost killed him. I liked that.
Small pox has the effect of bringing the town together for a change, at least temporarily. The need for fruit was so funny. I'm guessing though that it was a bit if a delicacy in Deadwood and would perhaps entice the men to come. "Free fruit! I'll be there!" Or maybe it's just one of Al's quirks. The disease got the best of Al and Cy. They tried to ignore it and hide the sick because it would hurt their business, but finally had to try and treat the sick and obtain the medicine.
Cy is more than an SOB. He tortures people mentally. He might as well hit them with a club, but this way is just as effective and leaves no marks. Joanie will break free eventually.
I loved how Trixie and Alma are fooling Farnum. Alma was really feeling withdrawal, but she played along as though she was drugged. Farnum reports to Al that she was acting very seductively. I loved how he described it.
I never gave much of a thought to other women in camp, but you're right. There were enough children in camp to start a school eventually. Maybe some men sent for their families after they got settled, like Seth did. BTW, when Seth gave Sol the letter for Martha...it was very touching. I'll bet a lot of men did that, not knowing if they would live or die in that lawless, rugged place.

I just watched the next episode, but will wait a couple days to comment on that. BTW- Hope you are having a good summer, it has cooled off a bit here, those 85 deg days with high humidity were killing me. There is always more work to do in the garden/yard, as you mentioned earlier. Hope you are also enjoying the fruits of your labors.
