bookperson 39, I agree that the first Poldark was great the way it was. I am not watching the "new revised" Poldark. To me, it's like the revised Forsyte Saga. I watched the black and white 60's version, read the books, and was in love. The revised version left me non-plused.First of all, Irene was supposed to have been a great beauty. In the original she was. In the do-over, she was played by Gina Mcee (sic) who is a great actress, but hardly a beauty. Hardly believable that men would be fighting over her. Damian Lewis was not nearly as creepy as the new Soames. IMHO.

Just saw this in the local tv listing. On Sunday night 7/26, on AMC at 9pm central time there is a show called "Gunslingers"
Subject is the real life Seth Bullock and the show is narrated by Deadwood creator David Milch...Could be wonderful!
ALSO--Are we all watching episode 3 Deadwood Season 1, for this weeks discussion...?

That sounds great! I'd love to see it. Hope there will be access online in some way, not being in America there's no way for me to see it on TV. ALSO--Are we all watching episode 3 Deadwood Season 1, for this weeks discussion...? Definitely! I watched it last night but then was too tired to write something I'm again surprised how much of the plot I either missed or forgot. But this time I'm really paying attention! Brom Garrett is so funny, being such a well bred city man. But I feel sorry for him, too. I didn't get the vibe that Alma doesn't like him at all. Maybe she never was in love in with him and she hates that he made her go out west, but she seems to have some affection for him. Al and his fear of the Pinkertons and of competition made me smile. I'm just waiting for Seth and Alma to meet, I think that's going to be next week !!!

I found the original mention of this in my Thursday newspaper...it does say AMC, 9 PM Sunday.... but I could not find it on the AMC Sunday TV listings either. So did a little research:
IT is actually on AHC, something called American Heroes Channel---which I have never heard of... it says Robin Weigert is also on the narration...Calamity Jane in Deadwood.
I have to search some more to see if this network is something I can see. I don't have cable TV, but I can find someone who does...but this doesn't sound like basic cable to me... Here is the link online... www.tvweeklynow.com/news-blogs/news-blogs-RicksPicks/american-heroes-channels-original-series-gunslingers-returns-for-second-season.htm
I hope some of us will be able to watch this tonight...
******************* Found it on the comcase/xfinity channel listing. It used to the Military channel, lots of WWII programming...owned by Discovery, now called America Heroes Channel. "Gunslingers" is on all evening, with the "Seth Bulllock" episode on at 9am central time...the channel number where I am is 112. I may be able to see it tonight, hope others can too.

Same, for me, mare. I just found it myself. I didn't know what AHC stood for. Anyone not in the central time zone will have to adjust accordingly. I was just clicking through the Comcast on-screen guide and found it.

I was just clicking through the Comcast on-screen guide and found it. Well, I was able to watch this...not too impressed, I guess anyone other than TO as Seth Bullock is hard to imagine. I learned a few facts about the man I had not known before...David Milch was not really the narrator, but just made a few observations. The character of Seth does most of the talking... this is what happened when I went to Deadwood...and then the narrations of various experts in Western history specifically about the Gold Rush of 1876 and Deadwood/badlands. The man had a colorful and impactful life in those days. I knew he didn't win the election for sheriff, but David Milch tells the tale of Seth Bullock refusing to give up the sheriff's office, back then, and it would have been part of a Season 4 of Deadwood, had there been a Season Four. That story was not mentioned in this show. If you were not able to watch, don't be too disappointed. Going to watch Deadwood, ep 3 tonight or tomorrow Looking forward to comments from everyone.

I'm done with Episode 3. A lot of small bits of business that will all lead to the major events in Episode 4. Al and Dan setting up Brom. Al finally selling to the hardware boys, so they can start building...Charlie and Wild Bill building a connection to Seth and Sol. Hickok playing poker with McCall and later Seth throwing McCall into the muddy street. Intro of Cy and Joanie...loved her top hat and long scarf, so elegant. He reminded me of a cartoon villain, Snidley Whiplash...twirling his mustache... Seeing how alone Alma is, even before Brom is gone. She stands in the window of her room and looks out on the town...observing everyone, high on her "medicine", making no connections to anyone...who would be her contemporaries in this town? so far there are no women to be seen other than the whores and Jane. She is really adrift in this place. I like how she tried to get her husband to leave...let's just call this our adventure and go. Favorite lines Al to Brom...I don't collude, I don't cahoot. Charlie to Sol...I'd be lousy at retail. Charlie to Seth and Sol...Feel like a shoulda brung posies. Joanie to Al...Oh, I speak French. Favorite scene...Charlie asking Sol and Seth to join he and Bill for dinner. Seth and Sol exchanging a look after they buy the lot, we're in business. Charlie is becoming one of my favorite characters in this show...great dialog and always good intentions, tries hard to take care of Bill. Actor who appeared in Justified...Peter Jason who is the top hat wearing poker player at the table with McCall, was the collector of Hitler painting in S1 of Justified. There is a lot of good stuff coming up in Episode 4, can't wait... What did you all think...?

Mare, I'm apparently really bad collecting favourite lines, but now that you mentioned them I remember and laugh out loud again! And that picture of Bullock and Wild Bill outside the hotel you posted: I'm always surprised when someone is taller than TO because Raylan looks so tall! Just had an idea, would you say that Wild Bill and the later Raylan have a lot in common? They both have this done-with-everyone's-shit attitude that apparently comes with advancing years

I would say that is an interesting observation...maybe their past shared history of being a lawman in the wild West, perhaps? Seen everything?
Also, I love looking for the memorable dialog. So many wonderful lines in this show. This is the first time I thought much about Alma and her situation... Every time you watch this, there is something new to discover.
Re the height difference: during filming, it appears that they are closer in height, movie magic, maybe?

Per Keith's IMBD page, he is 6"1, only an inch taller than TO. Keith is 19 years older than TO. They were both in "Damages", in 2010.

Summertime goes so fast, doesn't it? Do you think we should put this on hold? Maybe people just don't have that much to say ... Could also be that there is more to say and discuss once the story has progressed a little more. And I am really looking forward to episode 4. Let's do episode 4 this weekend and then maybe take a week off if things don't pick up.

After nearly killing myself last week with yard work, I have been playing catch up on inside things this week. It has been too hot to do anything else out side (tackling my herb garden and pruning.) Plus, it has taken days to get my decrepit body back to some sense of normalcy. I have a family reunion out of town this weekend and have food to buy and make for that, too. I watched the episode, but don't have a lot to add except that I, too, saw it as a foresight into all kinds of nefarious things to come. We all knew that Garrett was going over that cliff. Another deadly deed carried out by Dan and decreed by Al. (I loved Al's take on the arrival of the Belle Union gang. One can just see the wheels turning in his mind at this latest threat to his being king.) I also see Alma as being very lonely. Now her last thread to her previous life is gone. If I were her, I would have been terrified to be all alone among that band of criminals. (No wonder she eventually turned to Seth.)
I will continue to watch, although this is the never-ending, no good, very bad, terrible summer.

Same weather here, hot and humid... where is that handsome stranger coming to the door, out of work, offering to help with my yard, "cause every yard could use a little work..." ? (remember episode 5 of Season 1 Justified?) if only.... back to reality...don't be too rough on yourself about getting the yard work done....one of the pleasures of the yard is sitting back in the shade with a cold drink and feet propped up...whether you are done or not. It's not worth killing yourself over, just grass and weeds and flowers and dirt. I have enjoyed it more since I started thinking about that. As for Deadwood, Alma makes me sad, after ep 3. Also sad for Bill and Charlie as we know what's coming... Have a great evening...

Seth and Alma still haven't met! Aargh! Next week then ...
This was an action packed episode. At this point Deadwood feels like a very well constructed, sort of claustrophobic suspense thriller in a way. That quality petered out a little later on although I can't pinpoint the exact episode where I started to lose interest in the repetitive machinations of Al and his henchmen. I'll look out for that this time. I noticed againt the sparse use of music, which works very well for me. It's all the more effective when it does come in.
My favourite scene was Wild Bill talking to Alma and his thunder analogy. "Listen to the thunder". That gave me a case of goosebumps. I continue to love Alma. This may be due to the actress who I think does a tremendous job (as does everyone else), but as I was the first time around I am particularly interested in her storyline now. I think she's holding up pretty well considering her situation and her unfamiliarity with the ways of the wild west.

Really enjoyed re-watching this one. Despite knowing the sad ending. Nice scene with Bullock building and Wild Bill stopping by...making friends. Charlie, mother hen to Bill...and then leaving town unaware he would never see Bill again. Dan, hauling the "dude" back and Alma in the street, barefoot in her nightgown.. Al meeting with Wild Bill, the beginning of the smallpox outbreak, Cy and Joanie meeting the Doc about their needs, lots of last moments with Bill and various characters. Bullock, Bill and Sol meeting about Alma's needs, Alma's story to Jane about her wedding day..."Maybe he'll die" she said about her husband. Memorable lines: Nutley to the card players "Double f**king solitaire! Where are your f**king ballgowns?" Joanie to Doc..."Lubricants." Doc "Armed and Ready." Favorite scenes- Alma and Wild Bill, sound of thunder. Nutley chasing McCall and punching him for shooting Bill. Seth and Jane finding Bill, shot. Seth's tear-eyed face at the end...Loss of his new friend.

This is my third time through and I still can't get over the horrible death of Wild Bill. Seeing Seth tear up at the news showed that he truly had a heart. He thought this man could be a friend. There was a connection there. Seth really didn't have anyone else in Deadwood that he related to other than Sol. Wild Bill was going through a personal crisis of sorts, but he wasn't a bad man, as many were in Deadwood. I think Seth realized that.He was going through a radical life change too. Remember that this was before Seth was appointed sheriff. He was going from lawman to store owner. A great change. He understood that Wild Bill was going through a life crisis. He had not adapted to the change from lawman to average citizen well. It was a struggle for him. He talked about giving up.( Depression rearing its ugly head here, without Bill even knowing what was overtaking him.) Seth was a more multi-faceted man than I acknowledged during my first viewing of Deadwood. The more I re-watch, the more I see.I think it goes so fast that it requires additional viewing. (Or maybe I am just old and don't catch it all the first time. That's probably it.)
I've stated many times that I love Calamity Jane. She becomes a hopeless drunk after the death of the man that she adores, but she still has a heart of gold when it comes to the "little one." An example of how no one is truly irredeemable.
Ah,Alma. I love how she describes how she came to marry Garrett. It was never a love match, but a marriage to help her father get out of debt. It happened a lot in those days. Women dealt the best that they could in a bad situation, and I think Alma was no different. But she did say "Maybe he'll die." She got her wish, but I'm not sure she knew all that it would entail. Now that Wild Bill is dead, she has lost her protector. But...Seth to the rescue! Get ready ladies. You know what is coming.

Something was eating at me about this episode. Andy Cramed, who brings smallpox to Deadwood was an actor that I had seen somewhere else.(My feeble brain could not place him.) Voila, imdb! He plays David Lee on The Good Wife! An ever present thorn in Alicia's side on that show. Can't believe I couldn't place him right away. He was SO familiar. Deadwood has been a springboard for actors to so many other great shows, including Justified. Small world!

I wonder if we should put this discussion on hold til fall, maybe... Seems like not too many folks have time to participate at this time of year...
I can go either way, continue as planned or start with episode 5 in the fall, or your other suggestions...? What do you think?
There have been so few of us participating...although perhaps many are tuned in, just not posting...hard to tell. Have a wonderful Sunday...it is steamy hot where I am and the yard work must be done...
Wish there was some news about new jobs for TO...I'll bet he'll be at the US Open Tennis at the end of this month...

Maybe you're right. There hasn't been a lot of participation. Personally I'd like to continue my rewatch, but if you think there will be more activity in the fall, maybe putting the thing on hold is smarter. Although there's no real telling if that'll be the case ...
I'll probably be ready to continue whenever, so maybe some of you guys should post here when you're ready to continue and have a little bit more time on your hands.
It's been a scorching hot weekend here as well, I don't always cope well with heat so I got exactly nothing done. Hope yours went better, Mare!
