Yup, Clint Eastwood. Here's a little blurb about it from Sun Sentinel back when.
77 Sunset Strip 95' to echo '58-'64 series
77 Sunset Strip, the hit detective series of 1958-64, is en route to a comeback - with Clint Eastwood on the roster of producers for the prospective new weekly show.
Soon to be made into a pilot presentation for the new WB network, it's being called 77 Sunset Strip '95. There'll still be a Kookie - the parking lot attendant character that made Edd Byrnes a hot name and made "Kookie-isms" ("piling up the Z's" instead of sleeping, for instance) a national pastime 36 years ago. This time around, Kookie's an aspiring stand-up comic who works part time as a messenger. He's supposed to be in his late teens or early 20s, and that lets Byrnes out. Indeed, 77 Sunset Strip '95 will feature an all-new cast.
And here's as it pertains to TO: Olyphant started his acting career at the Off Broadway theater. He achieved a major breakthrough with the role of Tim Hapgood in the Playwrights Horizons’ The Monogamist in 1995 and won the Theatre World Award for Outstanding Debut Performance. One year later he took the role of Joe Mantello’s one-man play The SantaLand Diaries but before that he gained his first television role in the pilot for the series (remake) 77 Sunset Strip which was produced by the legendary Clint Eastwood. In 1996, he accepted the role of Scooby in the CBS’ short-lived crime drama series Mr. & Mrs. Smith

PPS- Here's TO talking about it in a transcript of that interview:
Mr. OLYPHANT: No, this was my first job of any kind outside of lifeguarding. You know, I moved to New York, I studied acting. My resume had a bunch of things I made up. You know, scenes I did in class and said that I’ve done in some regional theaters or something. And I went in a read for the late Phyllis Huffman, who cast all of Clint Eastwood’s movies and I got the job. It was for the WB network – their first season. Warner Brothers was starting this new network. Clint had – as I understood the story – Clint, you know, his relationship with Warner Brothers is legendary, so he was going to produce this show and I was going to be the kind of the Edd “Kookie” Byrnes-type character.
It was a tribute to the show. It wasn’t a remake. Some guy – Jim Caviezal was the star. He was the guy who moved out to L.A. and started a detective agency and named it after his father’s favorite television show, “77 Sunset Strip.”
GROSS: Oh, I get it.
Mr. OLYPHANT: Maria Bello was in it.
GROSS: Uh-huh.
Mr. OLYPHANT: So, I flew out to L.A. to shoot. We sat down at the table read. I was looking for Clint everywhere. He’s nowhere to be seen. So when we finished the reading I asked, where’s Clint, you know. They said he quit. Apparently, you know, about three-four days of television network executives he pretty much decided, ah, you guys go ahead without me. And so, that was it. But the pilot -the show didn’t get picked up.
GROSS: Let me back up a couple of steps here. You said you made up things on your resume.

Oh my goodness, alphamare, so TO has had that "Eastwood connection" from the beginning of his career! Oh and some guy named Jim Caviezal..... It's cool that so many of these actors who were struggling to establish a career back then have finally come into their own now, when their talent and skills have matured. You look at the then unknown people with whom TO worked in his earlier films. Many of them are just now getting quality parts and critical or audience appreciation. Thank you for this interview transcript.

Also, my Mom adored Edd "Kookie" Byrnes and his hair combing cool. She would have enjoyed hearing this story. I had just gotten her hooked on Justified when she passed away in late April. In one of our last conversations she said she had been catching the episodes out of order and, "that is a really good show! And your guy is a real hottie!" Yes, my 73 year old mother described TO as a hottie!

Jess, I LOVE Paul Bettany and think Sam Rockwell is cool. I started out this whole fan thang by joining a jillion Russell Crowe email lists and boards. LOL I still love Russell but he's not my A #1 BF at this point. I'm with you on Russell. I got crazy over him when Robin Hood came out, close to three years ago now. I still like him - I especially love the two westerns he made - but Tim has eclipsed him. I think Tim is a pretty big fan of Russell's acting - somebody told me he based the character of Seth Bullock on Bud White (LA Confidential). I can see that and if it's true it's pretty cool. Do you still post on Crowe Crossing? That's pretty much the only forum still active from what I can see. If so, what's your user name?

I don't know how I missed this. My score is also 23.
He's the prettiest in Catch and Release. I liked his acting the best in High Life. I'm not a Hit Man kind of girl.

I love the way he looks in 'High Life' - the wig really suits him. That and 'A Perfect Getaway' are my two favourite movies, though I really like him in 'Go' and 'The Girl Next Door' - there's just not enough of him in either.
I disliked 'Hitman' when I saw it but admittedly I'd had a few sherries beforehand, so should perhaps try again under more sober conditions.
I watched 'Gone in 60 Seconds' the other night. It actually wasn't as awful as I was expecting (I'm not a fan of that kind of film), but Tim's part was just nothing. As in nothing for him to do. Any hack could have made a decent job of that role. It was a total waste of his talents in the same way Robert Downey Jr was totally wasted in 'US Marshals' (which I saw last night).
Good actors need good roles, though I understand they also need money.

That kiss in Catch and Release does it for me. I am a hopeless romantic and he was just so sexy....tho when she makes that "nothing, less that nothing" you saw that fine Olyphant talent at play.

I think he needs the character roles that do not include CGI - why can't they really view Justified and see how he excels in character study roles...heck we got the Peabody for a reason. He has such depth and he needs roles that allow that depth to explode.

Just a heads up (and a warning) Electra Luxx is on free-Hulu. It may have been there for awhile, but I just saw it as I was looking for something new and of interest to watch. Timothy is good in his two scenes, although he could do this in his sleep. The scene in the bed with Electra Lux was tame, but the way they both fell back on the pillow when they were done doin’ it is almost exactly positioned like that scene with Grifter!Barbie. Joseph Gordon Levitt’s scenes are quite good as stand-alone fillers. There is one long scene, an uncredited cameo by my very favorite actress. Carla Gugino had one scene with herself as the titular character visiting in prison with her twin sister, who has a lisp, also played by Gugino (I wonder if this is where TO got the idea for his Raylan-with-a-lisp joke on that late night show). CG was quite good in that scene. Other than these parts, this movie will go on my worst-ever-movie- list as one helluva mess of a movie. To its credit, it is not a porn-lite movie (it wants to be an artsy comedy with a heart, Almodovar-wannabe), and there may have been only a flash of butt-cheek in the entire movie (not TO’s). It was just a mess of interminably long, talky scenes that tried to be funny, but really needed a good film editor. I kept advancing the movie, I was bored out of my skull. Watch if you have insomnia but need a Tim fix. You will probably fall asleep before you get to that scene, and it is early in the film. The gif at the top of this board is from that movie. TO is cute . I like that haircut, altho' he looks even better with longer hair as seen in season1 Justified.

I laughed out loud in the episode on Justified I think called Cut Ties with Gugino ...The scene in the car where they devise an approach to Joe at the hotel to get his guards disarmed...It was the similar wording to that scene from the capture above where she knocks on Timothy's door in EL....I wondered if that was Timothy's idea as an inside joke for their fans....I thought it was priceless...I love his sense of humor...

I've only seen three of his movies. I'm way behind. My husband got me The Perfect Getaway, Go, and The Girl Next Door for my birthday. I can't wait to watch them!

He's fantastic in all of the first three. I've not seen Electra Lux and have no real desire too. Kelly in 'The Girl Next Door' is smoking!

He's not really in much of Electra Lux. And it's an odd movie. I love Perfect Getaway, but I think Coastlines is my favorite.

He's HOT in all of them, some of the films stink but you can rely on Timmy for the watchability factor! He is good in all of them, even Electra Lux....I skimmed through the film and only watched his bits!

Husband and I watched A Perfect Getaway last night! Wow! Tim was so hot in that movie. I had a dream about him last night.
The movie was really good. I've always liked Steve Zahn's good natured goofiness. It was great to see him play a different role.
I want to get hold of Coastlines. Must catch up on the other movies I have.

kmmo...that's one of my favorite TO roles. Actually saw that before I knew who he was, then had to watch again after I discovered Justified. Luckily, my husband loves twisty adventures like that, so he wasn't suspicious!
