WAIT! Alma was pregnant with Seth's baby? How did I miss that? I'm re-watching Deadwood on Xfinity now. That's why she became Mrs. Ellsworth. So's people would think it "the issue of [his] loins." Shudder. And, so Trixie would butt out. ;D Damn you Martha for showing up, all responsible and smart and proper, and ruining all the good opportunities to see naked Seth writhing up a sweat with the Widow Garrett. DAMN YOU AND THE STAGECOACH YOU RODE IN ON! Oh wait. All of those people died, except for you.

Get thee the FNL dvds, Alphamare. All five seasons are out now. As far as I'm concerned, you can skip S2 or parts of it, anyway (Dolphin will know what I mean) but every bit of the rest of it is gold. And, like Justified, it isn't just about the lead guy....everyone on that show is given an opportunity to shine at some point. Another reason to watch: IMO, FNL did a better job than Justified in dealing with female characters. Aside from Ava, who's transformation from helpless and love-struck in S1 to remorseless madam/murderer in S3 bothers me a bit, sometimes the Justified writers don't know what to do with strong women like *cough* Winona and *cough* Rachel. Kentuckygal, I don't hate you for not having seen FNLs. But as a die hard Kyle Chandler Fan ... please do yourself a favor and watch the series. I promise you will not be sorry. The pilot is one of the best TV pilots ever made. I was 100 percent HOOKED by an early ep called 'Windsprints,' although the other earlier eps are very good, introducing characters. If you thought Kyle was good in Homefront (and he was!!) ... he was born to play Coach Taylor and blew Billie Bob Thornton's movie portrayal of the coach out of the water. The portrayal of Mr. and Mrs. Coach has been called one the best TV marriages ever. (When Kyle has chemistry with his lead ... a la Homefront ... it's magic.) 2 times Emmy nominated (seriously, should have been 4!!! It was a crime he wasn't nominated for Season 1) ... Best Actor winner last year for the body of work ... Kyle was so wonderful in that role. It was the first role he's had that was worthy of him in a dramatic sense. He's dramatic, driven, funny, strong, conflicted, moral compass, frustrated, supportive, loving and pissed off. And so good looking. Connie Britton is his equal. They are wonderful together. It takes her some time for Tami Taylor's character to develop (from the one in the movie). It was good move and direction to change it up. A better fit for Kyle. You do not have to see the movie to watch the series. They adapted it that much differently for TV. The season 2 is not the best. There was a writers strike during that season and it showed. HOWEVER, there are some phenomenal eps in there ... more than half of them. Let's just say there are some plot strands that suffered because of the strike. And none of them involve Coach Taylor or his family. It's good to see them so that you have continuity for Season 3. Awwwww. The pilot of Early Edition is on the TV Guide network now, in the background. Kyle was so cute. Lightweight premise show, but he's such a hunk.

I was hoping we would get to see some Seth and Martha action since she took down the bundling board but that poor kid bought the farm and that put a damper on them.
Dolphin, I promise I will commit to FNL right after Justified finishes the next season.

Dolphin, I promise I will commit to FNL right after Justified finishes the next season. It would be good to watch after the long Justified haitus begins. I'm so grateful to Deadwood for introducing me to Anna Gunn. (Yeah, that and all the hot Seth and Alma scenes.) She is sooo freaking good in Breaking Bad ... especially this past season. She deserves the Emmy for this season. She turned an annoying, unlikeable character into someone so beaten down, trapped, scared ... she was very vulnerable and sympathetic this season. Anna has a tremendous range. I, too, thought Seth and Martha were on their way ... and then William died. If there had been a Season 4, Alma's sudden widowhood (and Seth's reaction too it) would have been troublesome for Martha. I wonder how they would have handled it back in those days?

I remember the thought that it was his baby crossed my mind but I wasn't sure. I think I was still stuck thinking about that hot sex scene he had with her. lol I love that pic of Tim in the tux. No man on the red carpet looks better than Tim. For that reason alone, it is a crime to all women that he won't be on the Emmy red carpet this year. That, and he deserved to be there ... was robbed.

Hi, I see this thread has been dead for a while, but I'm new here and I wanted to give my opinion on Deadwood. I watched it for the first time a few months ago, it had been on my list for a long time, mainly because it's one the shows that American studies majors at my uni like to talk about (along with The Wire etc.). But I think the reason I watched it now was all TO ;-) It's on my country's Netflix for streaming so there really wasn't an excuse anymore. Ok, so there's tons I loved about it, especially the first half of it. First of all it's a Western and I have a soft spot for all Westerns, even before I get picky in that genre. I thought it had brilliant characters, especially female characters which is still quite rare on TV. And I have a weakness for characters like Bullock. I started not being into it as much at about the end of season 2. I thought it started to meander and I didn't like that they were starting to turn Swearengen into an ally and a good guy just to keep him on the show. That pissed off my moral sensitivities. I'm not sure I'm as upset as others about it ending when it did, but a bit of closure would have been nice. Too bad they didn't make those films. I think I will rewarch this at some point, I really liked it but it probably won't go down in my top 5 all time favourites, sorry. However it has a solid place in my growing list of really good shows I would always rewatch and recommend. I love that you guys are interested in discussing the Seth/Alma/Martha triangle which is one of the most tragic things I've ever seen on TV. Tragic because Bullock was so set on doing everything right and beating himself up about the whole thing. Would have been easier if he'd been an asshole. The rest of the internet doesn't seem to be very interested in this storyline ... As for comparing Deadwood and Justified, I think that Deadwood was the better show generally. The writing on Justified was only sometimes excellent and I often thought that it would have worked better as a period Western (don't get me wrong, I still love it because it had great characters). On the other hand I think that TO delivered a much better performance as Raylan Givens. So I like them both for different reasons. Also, nice to see there's another MASH fan on here, that is actually one of my all time favourites. And I'm gonna give FNL a try, just because you recommended it, I hate sports and I probably never would have watched it otherwise One thing I missed though because I streamed Deadwood is the audio commentaries. They sound really interesting. I wish they had that kind of stuff on Netflix, too.

squeege,I think Deadwood is an acquired taste. The constant vulgar language and the violence are not usually my cup of tea. But I was drawn in by the characters and the story lines and the great performances. I,too, was devastated by the Alma/Seth/Martha saga. But it made for great television, as did many of the plots. As to the female characters, Calamity Jane was my fave. She was portrayed as a foul mouthed drunk, but there was SO Much more to her! I have watched it from start to finish twice and am ready for the third go round. It is compelling drama. I put it up there with The Wire. Just wish we could have had a bit of closure, as you state.I would have to agree that over all, Deadwood was a better series, but that Timothy was at his best as Raylan Givens. No one could have done it better in my humble opinion. He should have had many more accolades than he has received for his performance. I like Timothy very much, but this is not coming from an Olyphant "die hard." Some of his roles have been stinkers. But I do love some of his work and he is very easy on the eyes! I believe in giving credit where it is due, and he has come into his own. He was good as Seth Bullock and spectacular as Raylan Givens.Hope he is on a roll here.

I completely agree. Funny thing is, I wasn't bothered by the swearing, but I thought it was unimaginative. There must have been more than one cuss word at the time, right? The word c***sucker just annoyed me after a while.
Question: you said you'd like a rewatch. What would you think of doing a communal rewatch on this board?. As far as I can see you haven't done anything like this here (and it's the only active TO board I can find). We could agree to watch a couple of eps every week and then post our current thoughts, maybe with a slight focus on Bullock for obvious reasons. I remember this having been done a couple of times on a board for another show I liked and it was a hoot. Makes for great in-depth discussion. What do you think? Maybe there's more people interested. I also want to rewatch Justified (of course) once I have the DVDs, though that will take a little while still.

If you are asking for takers on a re-watchtc of deadwood/Seth and Justified/raylan you can count me in!!!! What enhances watching is coming here to "discuss" it. I vote yes to both....and yes liked Seth and loved raylan. He arrived on set as Timothy! Put on the boots, badge and that darn fine Stetson and was all RAYLAN!!! Filled out jeans rather fine as well!

I have started Deadwood again, but I can back off and wait for those of you who want to do a "group watch and discuss" If you have a chance to watch the DVD extras, like the David Milch and Keith Carradine interviews, there is a lot of insight and background. David Milch, I think is a kind of genius...he is an educator and he has a wealth of knowledge... I read a book about Showrunners, in which his story was predominate...The title was something like "Difficult Men"...in case anyone is interested. I learned a lot about history by listening to him...the whole story of Deadwood's beginnings, the mining, the movement of the people westward, the treatment of women Most of the women in the real Deadwood were prostitutes... even how the telegraph lines were connecting Deadwood and Washington DC before even San Francisco due to the bribery (gold) being paid to officials as the USA grew and expanded... I loved the characters, the sets and costumes were amazing...They really created a world. The Seth/Alma/Martha story was just a heartbreaker...This was my intro to TO, I saw this before any of his earlier movie roles... Maybe one episode a week would be a good start and see how that works...(there is a lot to do in the summer and I don't watch quite as much TV...am I alone in that?) Hope there is a good response, this will be fun!

Ok, so with ripetebook, mare27, maybe mondayschild? and me we already have a small group for a Deadwood rewatch I won't have a ton of time this summer, but one or two episodes a week are definitely possible for me. And I'll need something to cheer me up anyhow ... How do you guys think I should go ahead with this? Should I make a new thread with an announcement so more people get a chance to participate? Maybe wait another couple of weeks until we start? Being new to this board I don't wanna assume a "leadership position" in this. But I am quite excited about the idea What do you think?

I can't start for a couple of weeks. Between the yard work and my arthritis and my son's wedding reception I am so darn tired. Plus, I am binge watching a PBS series that a friend loaned me. In about two or three weeks I should be good to go.I will gladly dust off the old boxed set and be ready. If you want to start sooner I'll try to catch up. There are many times that I wished I had other viewers to talk with about the series.
And,mcm...you HAVE to be in on this!

Whatever works...lets do it. If you're busy just chime in when you can...opinions here are welcome and enjoyed. And I came late to deadwood...to see TO in the role...and yeah sometimes the language was hard but maybe because I binged and you only take so much...talk was the f-bomb was used 527 times....and ladies..I can have a potty mouth!

I'm in. I have the first season on DVD, but I think the rest is available on HBOGo or Netflix, so I'm good. And I've never watched S3, so it will be good to finish. Don't worry, I don't care about spoilers and I've probably read most of them anyway.
