Here's my take for what it's worth:
Downton Abbey is a mini-series, for God's sake. Any fool can see that. I love Hugh Bonneville. I wish he was my dad. But he does not belong in the best actor category. I love Maggie Smith. She is perfect in her role and always deserves to win. I also love Mr. Bates. But by nominating Bonneville, they have cut out Timothy. Bad move.
The Fox conglomerate is a cross between being corrupt and being right-wing, bat-shit crazy, but they have some of the best drama around on FX. Their shows are unique, and peopled with great concepts and fabulous actors; Sons, Justified, the jettisoned Damages, etc. They also had Rescue Me which was resoundingly ignored. Hollywood is very liberal and I think they take it out on Fox because their news division is so corrupt and so right-wing. I can hardly blame them, but on the other hand, they are ignoring some really great shows and performances.
Jeremy Davies is not a guest star. Even though there was not a total emphasis on his character in season 3, he played a big part and his story was resolved. Dickie Bennett is fabulous. B TW, I describe his haircut as "casual weed-whacker."
I didn't hate Mad Men this season. There were some saving graces; we got some more insight into some of the other characters, which I liked. But it isn't the best thing out there.
Emmy loves Mad Men and Modern Family. I'll be very surprised if their actors aren't all over the stage again.
We will probably see a "goodbye" Emmy or two to shows that are finishing their runs, like Kyle Chandler's long awaited award last year. It always happens.
I probably sound very cynical here, but I chalk a lot of this up to Hollywood politics and behind the scenes deal making. I would love to be proved wrong some year.

You bring up a good point about FOX, Monday.
I was a rabid X Files fan. What FOX did to certain cast and crew of X Files in terms of their compensation (David Duchovny filed suit and became the outcast for going agains the mighty FOX) was greedy immoral. It caused a rift between cast members even though FOX was guilty of undercutting compensation by selling rerun rights of the show, not to the highest bidder, but to itself for a song when it formed FX.
I don't think you are being cynical. I think you're informed and right on.

Monday, I think I agree with everything you said, lol. I like Downton Abbey too, but come on, an Emmy for Bonneville? It's like they heard the buzz around the show, saw him as the patriarch and said, ok, let's give it to him. Like you say, the fellow playing Bates puts in a better performance. Of course nobody could argue with Maggie Smith. She steals every scene, as usual.
Agreed on Mad Men and don't even get me started about Rescue Me.
Yes, they do love certain shows, that's for sure. I confess, I may be the only person in America who doesn't find Modern Family to be hilariously funny, but then I do have a twisted sense of humor. Sorry.

How many television stations are there now? Hundreds??
And how many shows are on the air? I have no idea, but more than ever.
In these times, it is ludicrous for any 1 or 2 or 3 shows to sweep any awards show, anymore. Seriously.
After years and years of crap on television, now we have a glut of good scripted dramas to take over the pile of bad reality TV we were stuck with for so many years. Yet, another reason it is ludicrous to have a few sweepers take over all the awards. It's BS that no one is buying ... except for the few winners and their fanbases.
I hope the loser is The Emmys broadcast. When their viewership goes into the toilet and they re faced with a threat of cancellation ... maybe that't the only way they'll get the message.

We aren't the people who vote, so I guess we can't get into their heads, but it is obvious that something is amiss when so many people disagree with the way they do things.
Modern Family? Meh. It's cute and funny, but does it deserve to be nominated (and win) every year? A show like Raising Hope is just as funny, and edgier. And if we want to get really edgy, we can watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. But I have to admit that I am not a fan of most of the most recent forms of comedy. I guess I'm just too old. Modern Family appeals to me more than some of the crap that's out there, but I have pretty much given up comedy for drama.
I have often said that Rescue Me was rude, crude and socially unacceptable. But WOW! It was so powerful , and sometimes off the wall hysterical. It only ever garnered a few nominations, and given the depth of the performances alone, it should have had dozens. As we discussed many moons ago, Denis Leary is an acquired taste, and I think the Emmy folks found him a bit disagreeable to work with. But this should not have equated to him being snubbed.
We all love another show that was quite risky in terms of content: Deadwood. (And I mean "risky", not "risque," although it was that also. But it was high, captivating drama. It's reward? Cancellation.
Good art is just that. It should be judged on its merits, not by the personal whims of the Emmy voters. It's sort of like the presidential race. A president should be elected on his or her vision for the country, not on popularity. Television is a money making proposition, where it should be a platform for excellence. (This is why I love PBS.)

I feel like crap today. I have a cold and I'm still angry. Can you believe that. I'm such a silly billy. I wonder if Tim is seriously peeved or if he takes such things lightly. But from what I understand this is very much his show and he puts a lot of effort into it. Coming up with lines and stuff, hence the producer credit. He strikes me as rather ambitious. I'm sure he is pissed. But at the end of the day what really counts are the ratings.

I agree, Bookperson. As bad as we feel, they must feel especially cheated; however, they know this business and how fickle it can be. Dolphin, loved your analysis. I haven't seen a lot of the other shows b/c they just didn't interest me that much. I liked getting your point of view having seen a lot of them. BIG SIGH. I still say this sucks.

Remember how proud they were of Margo Martindale when she won last season? They were genuinely happy for her and proud of what she brought to the show. They created a great character and she just flat out ran with it. The show has a number of really unique characters and wonderful stories and dialogue that we love. The writers and cast and crew are all working really hard on what they consider to be a labor of love. Hard not to be disappointed, I would think.

What my inquiring mind wants to know is: What episodes were submitted for TO and Walt to Emmy voters? Has anyone read or heard anything?

I love that we are hearing Joelle's name mentioned as well. Both Robert Bianco (USA Today writer and Justif-ile), and Television Without Pity have her on their short lists. Her work this season was outstanding.

Love Joelle. Ava , not so much. It's a credit to Joelle that she has come to a new point in this role. Ava was once a sympathetic character. Now she has crossed over to the dark side. We may not "love" Ave anymore, but we surely love Joelle. She has taken this character and expanded it six ways from Sunday. I'm rooting for Ava to come to her senses. She has allowed herself to be whatever her love interest of the moment expects her to be. I want to see her become her OWN woman. She loved the lawman, and now she loves the outlaw. Come on, Ava. Think about what you REALLY want.
As far as the awards season, I vote for Joelle 100%. She has played a very difficult role very well.

Thanks for the link, wkw99. I had no idea Natalie was in 'Under the Dome.' I fell asleep 15 mins into the premiere. I guess I'd better find it online and watch it again!

Congratulations, Natalie!!! I might like UTD too. I didn't see enough of it to make a judgement one way or the other. I did read somewhere that it is a 13 episode project. If ratings are good, it will 'reset' for another season with a possible new cast. Maybe like American Horror Story did?

Zea: There are two very loud schools of thought about her: one side is that she just needs to shut up and give him a break, which I find fascinating because I can’t wrap my brain around it. I’m on her side, and I think it’s about her safety and now, the safety of her child. Winona’s point of view about Raylan, which is closer to my own, is: “You go do your thing, but don’t ask me to come with you.”It's like she read my mind and knows my passwords and stuff. Thanks wkw.

Hugh Bonneville? Seriously? Jeff Daniels and Kevin Spacey I don't mind but Bonneville irks me!! I've been watching House of Cards and I say Spacey wins this. And why do they keep nominating Jon Hamm? He never wins and he won't win this year.
Glad to see Connie Britton get a nod.
Hmmm...FX has got to be feeling slighted. They were shut out of the drama category. The Americans got all sorts of buzz but NO nominations, as of yet. All the supporting and guest actor nods aren't up yet. Gee, FX...maybe it's your MARKETING...or lack of it!!!!!!

Margo Martindale was nominated as Guest Actress in a Drama for The Americans. So, I'm happy for her. And American Horror Story got more nominations than any other show I think I heard. So I'm sure FX is happy about that. They sent out the entire season of Justified to voters, and it is critically acclaimed, so I'm just not sure what else they could do now. Emmy voters have their favorites and as long as those shows are on the air I don't think any amount of great writing or acting for Justified is going to get them back in contention.
