Timothy is doing pretty well here. I was afraid he would not show up on the radar, Emmy awards being what they are. I don't mean to imply that they are always wrong; they aren't. But they tend to award some of the same people over and over again, whether they deserve it for a particular season or not. Kyle Chandler? I LOVED Friday Night Lights. The whole cast was perfect. And yet Emmy did not recognize it until it's last season.
My feeling is that season 2 of Justified was a winner. This season was so different that it is hard for me to judge. Timothy "chews the scenery" at times, but his performance is often very understated; he is the most normal person in the room, so to speak. (Compare him to Quarles, for instance.) I'm not sure that the Emmy voters know what they are voting on sometimes. They see a clip or an episode. Sometimes that clip exists for them in a vacuum. Raylan is a work in progress. We see him progressing, OR NOT. I , for one, find him very different from the man we met in season 1, and yet he still carries some of the same baggage. He struggles, and yet he doesn't seem to know why he can't have a normal life. I love this struggle. But I'm not sure that the Emmy voters have seen all of this. They just see what is submitted and I don't think they GET IT.
This is a wonderful show with characters who are greatly flawed. The scope cannot be shown in a clip from an episode. This is true, also, for Mad Men, which I will watch until the end, but it is an acquired taste, very different from Justified, but not necessarily better. I don't think it should have won four years in a row.
I think an Emmy voter should have to watch a whole season of the shows that they vote on. Come on, you know that you can watch a complete season in just a few days. They should be able to do it, too, or not vote.

Kyle Chandler? I LOVED Friday Night Lights. The whole cast was perfect. And yet Emmy did not recognize it until it's last season. FNLs was finally recognized by Emmy in its 4th and 5th seasons with Best Actor and Actress noms for Kyle and Connie Britton. And Season 4 was arguable not it's best season. It finally reached 'critical mass' when it came out on DVD. People kept hearing about this fantastic show. And then, Direct TV stood behind it in Emmy campaigns (something NBC never did for the show.) The show itself was not recognized in the Best Drama Series category until its final Season 5. FX appears to be promoting Justified for Emmys. Word is getting out. That's good! Like FNLs, critics love Justified. The fact that it was recognized in Season 2 bodes well for the show. Hey, I just got my sister hooked and I'm working on my brother. I personally have gotten 5 people hooked since I joined as a fan last year. I'm only one fan of how many? I had a 'feeling' Kyle Chandler would somehow win an Emmy for playing Coach Taylor when the show didn't have a snowball's chance to even be noticed. I have had that same 'feeling' from day one of finding Justified that Timothy will win an Emmy for playing Raylan. (I'm hoping he's nominated this year and wins in S4.) Kyle Chandler is the king of 'less is more' when it came to dialogue on FNLs. He often deleted his dialogue from scripts. When Coach wasn't yelling at his players, he often said very little and the audience 'got it'. I'm hopeful they will do the same for Tim. Raylan is much more scripted than Coach. His dialogue (as all other characters) is FANTASTIC writing and Tim delivers it sooooo well. Monday, the reason I know so much about Mr. Chandler and FNLs is I'm the webmaster over at kylechandlercentral.com/ If I've already told you this before, please forgive. I just didn't want to come off as a 'know it all.' I just happen to be up to date on Kyle and his projects. And I research for a living so it comes 2nd nature. For Mr. Olyphant ... I totally defer to all you long time fans. Mr. Chandler is my first love, but I surely do recognize talent (and good looks) when I see it. And like I 've said, we went through this same Emmy thing with Mr. Chandler. From a fan's perspective, I totally get it. (These guys are close in age, family men ... well liked and respected in the Industry. So is Simon Baker. Beyond uber talent and good looks, a great bunch of good men to boot.) BTW, have you all seen the trailers for Dennis Quaid's 'Vegas' on CBS? Love all the leads in the show ... but what a POOR and OBVIOUS imitation of Justified. Yuck. Maybe that will help Justified next year, as it will surely be compared. My money is on Justified.

I do think people are finally coming around to seeing how awesome Justified is. I have gone on all the sites posted here hoping it helps in the Emmy nominations because it so deserves it. Timothy's acting is as multi-dimensional as the character he portrays. I think it is amazing how many different sides we see of Raylan, just like a real person; instead of some shows where all the good guys/bad guys are exactly the same. Boring. This is sooo much more interesting. His understated performance is something to behold. Much better than someone portrayed as mad all the time, or crazy all the time, or funny all the time. I hope the difficulty of the delicate balance he does oh so very well gets much deserved praise. It would be nice if he could actually use the Emmy speech he talked about on Conan!
Yes, I have seen the ads for Vegas and Longmire and all I think is "Justified wannabes." Somebody saw something that worked and copied it. I'd love to shout out "watch Justified instead!"

Can't speak to Vegas, but Longmire is no copy of Justified. It's based on some wonderful novels by Craig Johnson that West Texas over on the FX site turned me onto. If its anything like the books it'll have a completely different tone than Justified, I am looking forward to it.

Is anyone else intellectually bereft enough to read People? I am and there was a blurb about Longmire which said:
Sheriff Walt Longmire....makes Raylan Givens look like the sort of fun-lover who'd wear a lampshade over his marshal's hat...........
If the show isn't terribly ambitious to break new ground (you've already got Justified for that), it's a nice lull.
wkw99, the blurb was favorable to Longmire and gave it 3 of 4 stars.

Here's the trailer for Vegas: www.cbs.com/shows/vegas/As I said, love the leads ... but this trailer makes the pilot look slick, overproduced. LOL Of course, Las Vegas *is* slick and overproduced. I won't be tuning in. Not my cup of tea. Longmire is on cable ... and may speak to the quality. Plus the source material mentioned. Here's the trailer: No doubt there is a sudden onslaught of Westerns. Besides "Hatfields and the McCoys" on The History Channel and the ones we've mentioned ... NBC has also got a Western in the works.

Sorry just threw my first impression out there. Didn't really have a lot of time to check out the shows. Will hold further opinion until I actually watch them.

We tivo'd Longmire and are watching it here in a few. I'll be back with my impressions. Hatfields and McCoys was fantastic. It was incredibly interesting (and very sad) to see the story behind something that is such a part of American culture. I highly recommend it.

OK...post-viewing thoughts on Longmire. My husband and I really liked it. I'd read some reviews that said it was slow and plodding, but I didn't find it so. The story played out pretty predictably, but the characters are interesting, even beyond the main character. It seems to get the basic feel of the books, and the scenery is gorgeous. We'll watch again. I'd recommend giving it a try.
It isn't anything like Justified, really, aside from being about a lawman who wears a hat. Longmire is no Raylan. He's older, more seasoned, and less cocky than Raylan. But he is a pretty good shot. He's mourning the death of his wife a year ago, and has a grown daughter. He has a friend...something Raylan could use, LOL...a native American named Henry Standing Bear, played by Lou Diamond Phillips, who hasn't aged well. There's a female deputy and an ambitious male deputy who is running against Longmire for sheriff and from previews just might be sleeping with his daughter. I don't think that is going to go over well.
Like I said...it's a good set-up, and we'll keep watching.

Ugh. Who would have thought Lou Diamond Philips would crust up like that. No wonder his wife left him for Melissa Ethridge, she probably saw in coming.

I agree he's gotten kind of soft in the jaw, but she left Melissa, too, so maybe it has more to do with her than him.

So when will the Emmy nominations be announced?
Also, I voted in that poll. If it will keep TO in the voters' minds....

Justified doesn't need any more competition than it already has. Lou Diamond Phillips was on Southland last season. He got shot in the face.

There are a lot of pro and con articles on including Justified and TO in the 2012 nominations, out in the press before announcments later this month. Here is one that I like and hope the results mirror: www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2012/07/15/and_the_emmy_nods_should_go_to_/I personally do not think TO is in the vulernable 6th position for nomination as many critics are speculating. Hope I'm right.

There is something seriously iconic about the Raylan Givens character and much of that appeal is due to the way TO portrays him -- even if the third season may not have been as strong as the second. But something tells me they will go with a "safer", more predictable choice. I think this is where the sexiness also kind of works against him.

Voted again today. TO is getting higher so more people must be voting but the others are rising as well. Chistina, you're a crack-up. Love that you're getting into our Emmy's. LOL.

I've been following the Emmy Awards since the late 90s. Not that I would remember exactly who won what year etc, but I always check because the shows that get nominated are usually the ones worth watching. None of my friends have ever heard of the shows and they have no clue what the hell I'm talking about. All they have ever seen is CSI and crap like that (sorry to any CSI fans here).

alphamare Thanks for the link. I'm so psyched... I set my alarm to 14:40 hours CET. I just hope my internet connection doesn't break down. If TO doesn't get nominated I'll be seriously bummed. This makes absolutely no sense, but I always take stuff like that personally, like they did for the sole purpose of upsetting me. I'm a very silly person.
