The Emmy’s cast and crew panel was posted on youtube. I haven’t watch all of it yet but there are some spoilers. Tim is his normal goofy funny self interspersed with some lovely more serious stories.

This is awesome. I hope the Emmy's pay attention. The joke about how he rehearsed this role for three years, lol lol lol

The joke about how he rehearsed this role for three years, lol lol lol Look out for Hitman 2 in 2028! 🤣🤣🤣 And going into his meeting with Milch as the “strong silent” type. As well as his wife’s reaction to that. 😂 I’m at a work conference and woke up at the asscrack of dawn this morning, stumbled across this video. I had to contain my giggles while I watched this so I didn’t wake any of my coworkers up.

I think he played it exactly right. Would love to know whom he beat out.

Thanks hugely, SG. Best work I’ve read detailing Alzheimer’s. Having lost my mother to the disease, I assure u, I’ve read plenty. The journalist, Mark Singer’s personal relationship with the brilliant David Milch has doubtless provided a precious window into the mysteries of ‘The Long Goodbye’ and should enrich all who read it. Pulitzer level stuff

And a Golden Globe... and a statue at the end of it so we can finally get an acceptance speech.
This is truly one of the best interviews I've read of his. So insightful and filled with honest detail, including taking what he learned on Deadwood and applying it elsewhere. And the story about the Indian, wow. That fight scene was so good and so real and David had the genius to do it right.
I'm rewatching the show now. As much as I feel the man can do no wrong, I agree that he didn't give his best performance in Deadwood. He seemed very green in the show, except he absolutely knocked it out of the park in Go and Girl Next Door, so we know he was brilliant. He was just a bit out of his element and intimidated doing this role. He was trying to be the strong silent type or play the straight man, and he was surrounded by some of the finest actors available, so it really did stand out.
It's funny how David really was against casting Ian McShane and wanted Ed O'Neill (!!!) instead! That show just wouldn't have been the same. But he had the brilliance to see Seth in Tim. Would love to know whom he beat out for the role!

It was a really lovely interview. I'm glad Tim decided to finally do it, both the interview and the movie.
Would love to see him get multiple nominations for this. He deserves it after all these years.
I agree superglue, Deadwood isn't his best work by far but he did a good enough job with it. He was young and it was his first leading man role, pretty much everything prior to that he had played a bad guy. He was totally out of his element. I can't wait to see how he plays Seth in the movie now that he had matured and has played lead in several big projects.
I can't imagine Ed O'Niell as Al, it just doesn't work.

He explained it so well here. He was holding back because he didn't want to get fired while at first being lost in David's method, and not having the experience to portray this kind of character. He couldn't use his natural charms or humor to play Seth. The pressure must have been immense. I think this was the first time he ever had top billing (except for Santaland Diaries, when he was the only one in the cast) and that seemed to be a marketing thing, like, OK, Tim is our handsome leading man, and he's got to pull off this show. It's not that he was bad in Deadwood, it was just apparent that he was trying really, really hard.
It's interesting that he's just so honest, even down to telling the reporter he didn't want to do the interview! For a long time, he wouldn't even really criticize himself in Hitman or Die Hard. He would make a joke about the house and then go on to say what a great time or great experience it was. He was always stressing how grateful he was for each thing. I think this goes down to his turning 50 and not giving a fuck attitude.

Alan Sepinwall was tweeting about the interview. Surprised about this and that they cut it, otherwise Tim might come across as a bit of a dick instead of being funny when he told him to go fuck himself if he gets the details wrong. I'm wondering if that's why he was hesitant to do the interview? I assumed he just didn't want an in-depth issue to talk about his own performance while they were filming, but maybe he felt Alan had misquoted him in the past or screwed up somehow.
W. Earl Brown replied with a LOL emoji.

Ahh found it. Maybe the difference of a few days, but yeah that's an error. I don't know if that's why he didn't want to do the interview though... It's not a huge goof, but one he might be sensitive about, especially since he brought it up and it was left out of the interview by someone...

That was a really nice interview. I think Tim is a little too harsh on himself when he talks about his performance the first time around but we are all our own worst critic. I think he did a good job with the role but you can definitely tell he wasn't as comfortable playing Seth as he was playing Raylan or Joel or even Wes on Damages. You can tell he had more confidence and was more comfortable with his roles after Deadwood so I'm really excited to see him play Seth again in the movie. He explains well how his experience on Deadwood shaped his career and acting choices after it was over as well as why he was so hesitant to do the movie and why he never thought it was going to happen.

More info about the premiere in Deadwood tomorrow. Doesn't sound like Tim or Ian will be there (makes me less bummed about not going) but still some cool events going on. Q and A and autograph session on Saturday with W Earl Brown, Geri Jewell, and Keone Young. And another short interview with Tim and Ian from USA Today.
