Raylan may seem cold regarding Arlo, but he is not heartless. When Helen tells him that Arlo had a heart attack "two years ago" it takes him aback. He also goes right to the hospital after the second one. He tucks him in bed. The things that he cannot abide are Arlo's criminal pursuits and he lets him know it. The sad thing to me is that we never once saw Arlo treat Raylan with any kind of love or respect. Yes, Arlo does know how to turn on the charm in order to endear people to him. But he doesn't even try with Raylan. He actually IS cold AND heartless.

The sad fact is Arlo wanted what Beau got...a son to follow in his footsteps...Raylan is not Boyd!!!!!!!! Raylan is a lawman and yes he may take liberties but never for "profit or gains" his liberties is to save the victims...Tanner's mother is a prime example...Tanner is killed but Raylan goes and installs the tv her son bought but never got to set up...the man has a heart of gold from a father who was a heartless bastard...just makes Raylan all that more remarkable.

I watched "The Collection" tonight. (It was that or "Gone With The Wind" and I just wasn't in the mood for all of that strurm and drang.) Besides, half-dressed Raylan is always a treat. If those jeans had gone any lower the episode would have been X-rated!Plus this episode has one of the best lines in the whole series: "Honestly, I'd rather stick my dick in a blender."
Caryn Carnes is a real piece of work. She married her husband for his money and she and Mortimer cheated him out of more money by passing off the Hitler paintings as authentic. Raylan, with his keen sense for bullcrap, has her pegged pretty quickly. And I love how he explains to the FBI why Owen's death was not a suicide.
Winona played heavily in this episode. She asks Raylan to run some names for her. I can kind of see the wheels turning in Raylan's mind. She may be acting hostile toward him, but now she needs him. He doesn't share with her what he learned, perhaps not wanting to worry her, But we know he learned something because he went to Gary. Everything is friendly at first, but he warns Gary in no uncertain terms that Winona had better not be hurt. (Of course we all know now that Duffy shows up at her house and terrifies her soon after.)
Raylan's conversation with Greg is designed to get him to realize that he is in deep doo-doo and should not make things worse for himself. He draws on his own experience with Winona and the break-up of their marriage. There is a moment after Greg's arrest that is reminiscent of Tim's comments to Raylan in "Riverbrook." The idea of the woman you love sleeping with another man (or going up to the big house every night) can really get to you. This eats at Raylan. When Winona stops by to see him about the names he ran for her, his first response is to ask why she left him for Gary. (Yeah, Winona, why did you?) This seems like the first time that they have approached any kind of understanding of each other's feelings about the divorce.
He is just as to the point with Caryn. He is like the collector pinning a butterfly to the velvet. He knows she married for money and didn't love her husband. If he's dead the case is closed. Raylan lets her know that he knows her motivation.
Raylan and Art are wonderful together in this episode. Art may now be getting closer to the point where he is sorry Raylan came back to Kentucky and it will get worse before it gets better, as we all know now.
Raylan meets Hanselman, the art dealer, and learns that he is not alone in despising his father's choices in life. And Boyd gives Raylan a lot to think about regarding Arlo, as well. Is Raylan concerned about what unlawful things Arlo is up to, or is he just out to nail Arlo because he has been such a bad father?
I love this episode because Raylan is being forced to look at his motivations for what he has done in certain areas of his life, AND he is being called on the carpet to answer for some of the foolhardy things he has done. Example: "I'm looking into your shooting, Deputy Givens." There is a puzzled and dramatic pause when Vasquez says this to Raylan. Of course Raylan drags out his favorite old chestnut: "He pulled first." But perhaps Raylan is really thinking about his shootings. Are they all really justified or has he just set things up to make it seem that way?

Episode 06S1: The Collection
OMGosh. A collection of Hitler’s? What a dark comedy plot. (Yeah, I know Adolf painted, but still.) Not my favorite episode of the season, but a good one to move the season along.
Robert Pacardo (I first saw him in a guest appearance on Early Edition), Katherine LaNasa (I first saw her as a recurring character in The Guardian), Brett Cullen (who played Tim Riggins’ father in Friday Night Lights), and Tony Hale (Arrested Development). What’s not to love?
Art, Ava, Boyd, Winona, Gary, and USA David Vasquez. Again, what’s not to love?
We start and end the episode with Raylan and Boyd having a prison visit conversation about Arlo. And through Raylan’s conversation with Ava, we learn how she responds to Bo Crowder’s threats. As an aside, we learn Raylan worked out of the Northern District of Texas at one time.
We get to see more of how Raylan’s mind works when he’s in marshal mode. He’s quick, and he’s smooth. And Raylan looks GOOD in this episode.
Favorite scenes (lots in this episode):
1. One of THE funniest scenes in this episode (or any episode) is when Art comes to collect Raylan (who was not answering his cell phone and came outside to meet Art in an unsuccessful attempt to hide Ava from him), and Art makes the remark about Raylan’s nipples. That was the most awkwardly, FUNNY scene. And yes, we get to see Raylan's nipples and the rest of his wonderful torso. LOVE it!!
2. The scene when Raylan meets AUSA David Vasquez, and he learns that the AUSA is not there for the Carnes case, but for his.
3. When Raylan went to talk to Gary, putting him on notice.
4. The scene where Raylan puts the widow Carnes in her place. Her face in the moment she figures out that Raylan knows the Hiltlers that were destroyed were fakes was priceless.
5. The scene where Raylan and Winona reminisce about their lives before she left him, even though she tries to make it sound like he left her. It was the first tender moment between these two. I’m not a fan of Winona’s hair in this scene.
6. The scene where we see Raylan finally succumb to Karl Hanselman’s repeated pleas for Raylan to look at his Hitler collection. The parallel of the story he told about his own father, and Raylan’s was … too close for comfort.
Favorite quote:
“I’d rather stick my d*ck in a blender.”

But that's probably because I DON'T like the idea of anything happening between Walt and Vic AT ALL. I hope they don't go there, either. It would be better for the show if they don't go there with the two coworkers. As for Lizzie, I don't like her character for Walt. She's shallow and an opportunist. I know opposite attracts ... but she more like 'beat Walt down' in her pursuit than attracted.

Episode 07S1: Blind Spot
I really liked the episode.
After one of my favorite scenes (which is described in detail under ‘Favorite Scenes’), whew, this episode started off with a bang. Raylan’s off and searching for attempted murderers in Ava's bedroom, only to find out they were after him and not her.
Boyd’s still jail house preaching, mostly at Raylan, and they have a little dust up, only to have Boyd be the one to suggest that Raylan could have been the target in the shooting over at Ava’s. He assures Raylan it wasn’t a hit on Ava ordered by his Daddy, Bo. (We also learn that Raylan grew up seeing his mother beaten by Arlo.)
And then, we find out that it is Sheriff Hunter Mosley who is involved in the attempt on Raylan. And that Miami has something to do with it, too. There’s Wood, the hit man trainer, who films during his hits to make a DVD on how to be a hit man, and Wannabe hit man spotter, Red, who is about as lame as Dewey Crowe. Hunter Mosley ends up popping Wood and gaining control of Red. Mosley kidnaps Ava from the Court House to get to Raylan. He calls Raylan to meet him, if he ever wants to see Ava again. Ava is tied up in a van with Red.
Raylan and Ava each out maneuver their captors. Raylan is wired and the marshals move in. Guess Harlan Sheriff Hunter Mosley is no longer the sheriff. Did anyone else notice how happy and then, how shaken Raylan was to see that Ava was okay? How sorry he was that he couldn’t protect her? He cares for her.
Happy ending. Not quite. We are introduced to Bo Crowder in prison for the very first time. And what of AUSA David Vasquez? He wasn’t in this episode, but we know he’s sniffing around.
Favorite scenes (again, lots in this episode):
1. The entire opening. My favorite. Helen was so funny at the hardware store with Johnny Crowder. There was vulnerable Ava before she found her inner criminal. I really loved Ava then. In re-watching, I didn’t notice before how many times Helen was shown hiding behind an aisle, eavesdropping to hear exactly what Ava and Johnny were saying to one another. And when she had heard enough, she left and came back with her shotgun.
2. The first scene in the car with Raylan and Hunter Mosley where we learn more about the past in Harlan and the Crowders. Henry Crowder. I really liked this scene, too.
3. The scene with Art undressing Raylan, up one side and then the other, for sleeping with the witness in his own shooting. WHOA! That was some fantastic acting between Nick Searcy and TO. Art vacillated between total anger and disappointment in his marshal.
4. The chatty, nervous conversation the former Mrs. Givens tried to start up with Ava at the Courthouse. Ava was very cagey in not revealing too much about herself (and Raylan) but was very interested in finding out more about Winona. Raylan wouldn’t tell Ava much earlier in the episode, so Ava was naturally curious.
On to the next episode …

The Collection: (thought we were still in that week) Loved Raylan's lines in this one (like that is a surprise) starting with Ava and Raylan....watching our hero wake up...how his marriage ended amicably unlike hers. The bit about the haircut...now he could use her help....loved his bed-head...sexy...and the sheet being at just the right place. Followed by Art "catching" them....the nipples bit.....classic Art/Raylan banter. Then we get in the car and Art asks if that was Ava...and he is told it is not smart and Raylan responds basically not everything needs to be smart...he is a man and she fulfills a need. Of course the "rather put my dick in a blender will be a classic for decades to come...but Art's response was equally smart... Found his awkwardness with Hitler's painting interesting and when she referred to her husband's jew lawyers...again Raylan was uncomfortable and walked away. His scenes with Winona...that last one..more money, bigger house, bigger dick...and I counted her responses..."didn't measure" classic. Didn't pick up on her loving him at this point...just needed his skill set but his admission that losing a woman like her....sweet. But she did leave him...by cheating. That is not his fault and if she were honorable...she would have left and then banged Gary...she was in the wrong...the miracle is he forgave her. He forgives her every time...they could end the series with her return and willing to try again and Raylan burned three times says NO...to them but yes to Pamalive. Yes he will love her but three times being walked out on...maybe his heart has had enough. Guess my focus on this one was Raylan (again not a surprise).

The Collection was never one of my favorites, so I planned on skipping it, until someone reminded me of the scene between Raylan and Winona outside the motel. I love that scene. So...I rewatched, but I'm not up to analyzing. Next up is Blindspot, which IS one of my favorites. dolphin, you are in good company. I just read in one of the many articles about Elmore this week, that the scene between Winona and Ava in the courthouse was one of his favorites.

Just watched Blind Spot. We've watched these episodes so many times, and yet I find it very revealing to go back after so long and look at them gain.
Art shows that he is not the mild mannered Chief Deputy. Disobey him and you are in big trouble, no matter that you were at Glynco together. Raylan is sheepish here.He knows that Art probably never disobeyed orders in order to get laid. (In Raylan's defense, he is very lonely and Ava has been relentless.)
Can someone please tell me how Raylan realized that Mosley was involved? We go from Boyd suggesting that Raylan was the target rather than Ava, to Raylan accusing the sheriff and being taken hostage by him. How did he make the connection? What did I miss?
What I really enjoyed about this episode was the one on one close-ups. Raylan and Boyd. Ava and Winona. Raylan and Mosley. Art and Raylan. These told us lots about the characters that we hadn't seen before. Art can get REALLY mad. Winona is sizing up Raylan's new squeeze. Why is she so interested if she is so content in her new life? Raylan is coming to Boyd for help! Yikes! The camera angles really played up the confrontation between Raylan and Boyd. They made me realize the profound connection that these two have...the love/hate thing... and made me think that we were in for a very bumpy ride. In hindsight, we can see that all of these things were shown to us for a definite purpose. At the time, I dismissed some things that became so important later. They were building on the story to come in the following seasons.

We might have to triple up towards the end, last year Justified premiered on January 8. (That's only 136 days away!! ) That's what I'm thinking, too. Maybe from Thanksgiving week on, we could do 3 a week. The sooner the better in January for the season premiere would be fine for all of us! Also, get the word out (I know, we do this every haitus) to friends and loved ones to start watching this wonderful show if they're not watching already. It can use all the viewers it can get. We want at least two more seasons.

Boyd gave Raylan the last thread to tie Mosley into it all. It was an unseen scene but when Raylan was getting his gun back...Mosley already had Ava and was calling Raylan and he was NOT SURPRISED. Rewatch from the table jumping to his exit from the prison...it is there.

Blind Spot - I think refers to Raylan's lack of awareness when it comes to revenge against him...until Boyd points it out...Raylan thinks it's Ava when in fact it was always Raylan they wanted...thank goodness they had a jackass to do the deed...that poor hillbilly kid. Now to one of my all time fav scenes...watching Boyd quietly preaching as we see the rage in Raylan building until he comes over the table...classic angry man reaction. That explosion was a kick to watch. Plus how Boyd clearly knows what buttons and where they are in Raylan. Loved how Ava was torn up finally by the fact she killed her husband...in cold blood...he deserved it but the way she did it...he was unarmed and nowhere near...murder one. Loved Mosley and Raylan...their talks gives depth to Kentucky life and the way revenge is sought. Funny how Mosley's revenge on the Crowders played thru to season four and Drew!!!!!!! Loved the Winona/Ava scene...there I got the feeling Winona wanted Raylan...just checking out the competition. His childhood vs her 6 years of marriage? And then the Art and Raylan..."don't sit" and you knew Art was very pissed. Plus "you shot another man in Ava's house...in the bedroom." But when Raylan says transfer me...Art backs away...making me believe he sees that with "guidance" Raylan can be a good marshal...if Art can survive the guidance of the reckless Marshal Givens. Very good stuff.

Blowback: is almost the opposite of Blind Spot. We open discussing his meeting with Vasquez...til Wallace pulls the shiv from places we need not discuss. And he picks the shooter(that was a nice sort of Art/Raylan/firearms moment) aka Raylan controls the whole thing but from instincts. He handled it perfectly. No one died and he did give Wallace some semblance of dignity. Then at the end...Vasquez' meeting goes sideways...can I say they should raffle off those pics of our hero....I still want to know how/who took the pics? They seem to originate from the dresser in front of the bed...Beau could have paid to set up a camera...but how could he know? And did he plan? Makes no sense in a way...so then we look at Vasquez...who seems to have issues with the way Raylan does his job...maybe he hoped to get Raylan suspended. The net result was "forced vacation" classic Raylan way to see things...Loved that his passion for chicken slipped in their. Loved that we saw more of Tim and Rachel as well as Art. And in the end we got a clear view...the badge meant more than Ava. He blames himself but when he did not take that call....he was walking from temptation.

I loved the scene where Ava is cutting up all of Bowman's clothes and Raylan walks in. Joelle tugged at the heartstrings when she talked about how she should feel about killing a man. As a contrast to how Raylan feels (or doesn't) about killing a man. I really liked that scene, too. At least we know how he feels about killing a woman. Through Art, not Raylan.

Raylan took shooting a woman very hard and was vocal...it was Art that convinced him it was okay...had no choice. He was even thinking of hanging it (his badge) up...make a change. Then Art asks if that comes from Winona and he says things with Winona are great...ha ha - he gets home and she has left him....again. Then if you recall...his conversation with Ava about shooting a woman....Raylan took the act to heart.

Just want to let you all know that even though I can't keep up with the schedule of watching right now, I'm enjoying reading your comments and thoughts about them. If I remember correctly, Blind Spot has some of my favorite Boyd/Raylan scenes. The scene in the prison where Raylan says "I am not completely unaware of my motivations in life" (or something like that) is the scene that made me never want to miss another episode of Justified. Up until then I loved it, after that episode, I was somewhat obsessed.
