I didn't see all of this; was watching something else and just changed channels a few times to see what it was like. I'm not squeamish---love "The Walking Dead"--- but this was a bit much for me. Every time I switched over, everyone was walking through dark, dangerous buildings and ended up finding dead, tortured bodies. Not for me. westtexas, I think men can handle this stuff as bit more easily than most women. And Audrey, I'm with you. If I had watched the whole thing, I would have trouble sleeping. I think the reason that I can watch "The Walking Dead," but not this show, is that "The Walking Dead" is totally fiction, albeit populated by wonderful, relateble characters. That's the draw for me. This show is upsetting to me because there are true psychopaths out there who do this sort of thing. Thankfully, they are few and far between, but they are out there just the same and they are real and terrifying. bookperson39, many moons ago, you said we could call you Audrey. Since ripetebook is here now, and we have at times referred to both of you as "book," I will call you Audrey from now on if that is still okay. Cuts down on any confusion. And Audrey, as to your comments, and mcm's about animals, may I relate a true story? My brother and sil, had a precious cat, "Ginky." He got out of the house one day and they finally found him dead under a neighbor's shrubbery. Not a mark on him.. They never found out what happened to him. My mother was still suffering from the loss of my dad, and when I talked to her about it, it was very difficult. We suffer the loss of a close person most acutely. Perhaps we should equate the loss of a person much more than we should the loss of a pet, but it is not always so for those of us who feel that our pets are our "children." To try and explain this to my mom, I said that people can take care of themselves, but pets count on us to protect them. We lost our cat, Sandy, two months before my husband died. Sandy had hyperthyroidism, which is common in elderly cats. (He was 18.) He had responded to medication for several years, but while my husband was terminally ill, he became senile. It was all I could do to take care of both of them. We lost him two months before my husband died. This was the beginning of a deep period of depression for me. It was as though I had lost a child, and then lost my husband. A lot of people think that this is silly--- that pets are just that---pets. But those of us who value all of those in our lives, and all relationships, whether human or animal, it is very important. You may certainly call me Audrey. It's me name, doncha know. LOL I think it's hard for non-pet owners to understand how disturbing it is for some of us to hear about violence to animals. You're right that our pets become children of a sort. They have personalities that outsiders can't see and so they wonder why we cry when they die. "It's JUST a cat??". That said, I might give the pilot a try because I DO like Kevin Bacon. Maybe see how long I can take it.

Alright...you and okeydokey have talked me into checking this out and giving it another chance. If this results in nightmares and/or insomnia, high electric bills from sleeping with the lights on, nervous tics, etc. I am holding you personally responsible! Besides, I miss seeing NZ on the show she's supposed to be on. BTW, the recapper over at TWOP put quite a few Justified references in her pilot recap. Including this one: Yay. It's not the best thing ever writtern but it is entertaining and it does leave you wanting to see what happens next week. And their second episode numbers actually increased. So, thumbs up.

Random thoughts:
Last nights epi convinced me to record the series, but I still think the plot is a little far fetched. Seems like most of Carolle's minions are from his classes. Why does he make friends with some and kill others??
The creepy music is effective.
Was the Asian FBI chick's contract cancelled in favor of Sandra Bullock's mom??

I'm with you, MCM. I'm going to start recording it to. Smacking my forehead for not doing so before now. Dammit.

I did not like the cliche, hard a$$ FBI lead in the pilot and was overjoyed she was replaced. If they want to play FBI hard a$$, they need to bring in Assistant Director Walter Skinner of The X Files. I agree the basic premise is far fetched. I'm trying to like it. The leads are good, including Natalie.

Tuned in for episode 3. Kevin Bacon is so head and shoulders above the rest of the "cult" players as an actor; they look amateurish in their scenes.
OK, so, the B3 Cop ( Big, Bald, Black Cop) with the awesome voice got killed tonight. He bought it on the last season opener of Dexter too. Why does this guy have to die in ever series he's on? I love that guy. While the episode was on I said "I could listen to that guy all night." then when he bought it I said "Well, there goes my B3 fantasy" LOL. Damn. there hasn't been one as cute as him since Keith on Six Feet Under, and his voice wasn't nearly as nice.

Well, the show lost me last night in the last scene. I can't stand waiting around to see what they're doing to that little boy, twisting his mind like that. I had a feeling that was the purpose of taking him, and I'm not sticking around to see how that works out.
I'm not for censorship at all, but there are some things that just shouldn't be made into entertainment. I was not entertained by that scene, I was appalled.
Let me know if Natalie has a particularly good scene and I will catch it online at FOX's website. I'm done with this show.

Yeah, that made both the Spousal unit and I cringe, too. We're just not as sensitive cause we don't spend a lot of time around children. Now the dog torture scene, that one got to us.

I caught the last 15 mins. last night ... will have to watch the rest online. Sounds like I caught the most gruesome scenes. I'm afraid America's thirst for blood and gore is here to stay. Any word on the shows ratings? I agree ... child mind bending is disgusting (and why give some off balance people out there in the viewing audience any ideas, FOX??!). Natalie killed the distraught mother scenes, if you'll pardon the pun.

I realize this show isn't popular here, but I'm really liking it. And I'm really liking Natalie in this role. I'm glad she moved on, for her. For me, of course I would have wanted her to be the badass she is on this show. Glad she has the chance now. I'll keep watching it.

I still have not watched a whole episode of this. Sorry. I am reading one of Harlan Coben's latest books and I usually love his books, but this one contains sadistic violence and torture. I am not sure if I can finish it. It is beyond the pale as far as I am concerned. It's a compelling mystery, but the torture is more than I can handle. Am I the only one out there who has problems with this type of entertainment?

Monday, which book are you reading? If the title is what I think it is, you're going to want to follow through with it. But you're right; it is dark. However I liked it. I just got done reading the Brian Freeman series. Now that's dark, but really good. Now I'm back on Elmer Kelton.

i don't know how old many of you are, but I think, as we get older and see more of life many of us just can't take the really rough stuff. It's just not entertaining to us anymore.
I remember being in my 20s and 30s and scoffing at "old people" who couldn't take the rough stuff. Now I know how they feel.
I, too, don't believe in censorship, but I do think we could do without some of the torture manuals that pass for entertainment these days. I'm especially upset because I'm a big fan of Kevin Bacon and was so excited he got a show. But.....I have enough problems that keep me up at night without adding to the pile! LOL I'm glad Kevin and Natalie have what sounds like a good show, but I don't think I'll be watching.

I guess like Monday said, being a guy, I'm different. Not immune, just different. Being a rancher, I've had to put down horses, cattle and dogs. And guess how I did it. I also hunt. But I love my kids and would die for them. By the way, I'm 50.

I will be watching 'The Following' tonight. I really like Natalie's character in this show. As MCM stated, loved the slug she gave that idiot. So with she'd been able to have that hard line in Justified. But...woulda, coulda, shoulda. Guess time will tell.

I'm still watching and waiting for Natalie's character to get a grip on things and take the law into her own hands (she said her character eventually gets tired of asking them to do things and eventually does it herself)

westtexas, I was reading "Stay Close." Is that the one you were referring to? Great story as most of Coben's are. Just that the killer/ torturers were psychos who loved what they did. Not my cup of tea.
I tend to be a gentle soul, a lover of children and animals. I agree with Audrey. The older one gets, the harder it is to look upon violence and torture as entertainment. "Justified" can be violent, but it leavens the violence with humor. Or it's done to advance character development. And for some reason, I love "The Walking Dead." Again, it think it's the terrific characters and the great acting, and the compelling story. Under ordinary circumstances, these people would not act violently, except for a few of them, but they' re fighting for their lives.
Just my preference, and we are all free to choose. For those who are caught up in the story of "The Following," enjoy. It's just not for me.

For me it's just all fiction. I just can't differentiate acts of violence from one show to the next. I have two dogs that are spoiled rotten, and I tear up when I see dead dogs and cats on the side of the road. And while I don't have kids, I have broken fingers keeping one of my nieces safe. Justified isn't a manual about how to be a US Marshal anymore than Dexter is one about being a successful serial killer or The Following about how to be a cult leader. Maybe it's just that I don't find violence on television compelling enough to get all up in arms about it. It's just escapism. At the end of the day no animals or people were harmed and I can turn off my tv and go about my business.
Anyway, last nights episode was really really good. I wonder if it all will be resolved next week. And weegie, it looks like this episode was the beginning of NZ's storyline. She did a really great job in that opening scene on the phone with Joey.

I'll be watching in a few hours. Like you most TV violence doesn't affect me other than my pulling a face, I know that it is fictitious. I'm much more concerned about "reality TV" and the signals it gives our youngsters these days.

I second your crap. Oh well, it probably doesn't make much difference. I think the producers intended to marginalize Winona regardless of Natalie's availability. This move just helps us stop deluding ourselves and holding our breath.

Lol. Not my initial reaction, but I definitely feel conflicted. Like I've been saying, I give this show two seasons tops. I just hope the folks on Justified are a little bit more tight with following their storyline, specifically when it comes to Winona and thus Natalie's availability.
