I'm happy he's doing something in his off time, but that sounds absolutely horrible.

On the positive side, that's a promising cast. TO must have seen something in the script, the character or the story idea that caught his interest. Certainly the bare bones description isn't "showing us any flake," to borrow a description from Deadwood.

Okay....that sounds a little bit better. I'd love to see him stretch a bit though, play something different. Like a romantic comedy. With sex.

[/b] www.deadline.com/2012/12/justifieds-timothy-olyphant-takes-aim-at-bone-tomahawk/(I was worried, too.)[/quote] Yes! That second link especially makes it sound more intriguing. I can picture TO in that role, not some grade Z 1960s/70's Italian cannibal horror flick. LOL (No offense meant to any Italians. But those were awful exploitation movies.) Okay....that sounds a little bit better. I'd love to see him stretch a bit though, play something different. Like a romantic comedy. With sex. I'd love to see TO in a decent romantic comedy or a "George Clooney" role? But I'll take him as " a dapper, well-spoken sniper who moved [to the] Wild West in order to satiate some dark urges that lie within him. "

I'm going to have to reserve judgement on this one. I'll wait and see. But I must agree with wkw; he needs a charming, well written, romantic comedy. It would be a lovely change of pace. As much as I loved him in Deadwood, and The Crazies, and now Justified, I can take only so much darkness. (He wasn't exactly all sunshine and flowers on Damages either, although that's one of my favorite roles for him.) I'll wait until this new film rolls out, check out the reviews, and then decide.
I think part of my problem is that I am addicted to The Walking Dead. It is so dark and gory that I just can't handle anything more like this right now.

And yes, it's dark and gory, without the benefit of Justified's humor. I watch with a bunch of friends and we try to lighten it up by making fun of the zombies, or predicting who is going to get chomped next, but the last few episodes were pretty intense. Excited to see where it goes in February. Are you a Daryl fan? He's my favorite character at the moment.

No one knows how to write decent romantic comedies these days. Even Woody Allen has become boring...

Not my cup of tea :-(
I'd love to know what kind of budget it has. If it is a small film then I'd say he has been playing the same role for four years and he wanted to do something creatively stimulating.
If it has a good budget, with potential for 'escape from new york' kind of draw, then I'd say there is a method to the madness. It seems like his latest film choices such as rango, die hard, and Number 4, were conscious choices to put him in 'bigger' movies even if it means smaller parts. This may be his best bet so far and this character with his background (Deadwood/Justified) might be a calculated way to 'go big'. I'm not sure I'm explaining my theory correctly? I think it boils down to, he has a better chance of geting a role in a potential hit movie if it is somewhat typecast. No one right now seems willing to cast him as a big lead in something 'different'. We know he can play anything, and do it well, but not enough other people do. If he can buy his way in with a character that is Bullock/Givens-esque and raise his visibility then I say good for him. He has tried really hard with the 'good but unseen' roles and it ain't gettin it done.

I do like Daryl, wkw. I think the thing that has shocked me most about the characters, is how dark and super agressive Rick has turned out to be. Of course, in his position , he can hardly be a candy-ass. I have not seen the part 1 finale yet. Am going to watch as soon as I can. Christmas has me swamped.
The acting is great on this show and the story is definitely compelling. I actually watched season 2 as a marathon. I was totally wiped out at the end.
I still have a "wait and see" attitude on the new Tim movie. I know everyone here will critique it within an inch of it's life, so if all of you love it then I'll give it a whirl.

I say "damn the troglodytes....full speed ahead!"
"Appalled" doesn't describe how I felt about this when I first read about it, but after a few of the later articles, I'm getting a bit excited about a dark, dapper marksmen who joins a band of badass brothers to ride (I hope) to the rescue. I say "bring it on" and hope the trogs have their Blue Cross up to date!

Hi Girls I'm back.
This type of film surprises me for TO. Thought he might want to put the cowboy persona to rest for a bit. There must be something interesting about it.
Even if TO wasn't involved. I'd see it for Kurt Russell; who arguably has the best hair ever in Hollywood. I know, I'm so deep.

Glad to see you back, mcm. And I love the "I Love Lucy-esque " avatar. (That's just the thought that strikes me when I look at it.)
I guess we have to accept what Timothy decides to do. He has his reasons. I would like to think that this is going to be great box office and that it will catapult Timothy to great stardom and many awesome roles in the future. I'm just not convinced YET.

Well, I'm pretty sure that Tim would be doing other, "outstanding" movies IF they were offered to him. He is a clever guy. This is probably the best offer he has had in some time and he loves acting. So rather than doing nothing, he accepts the chance that seems the best bet at the time. Let's face it: Tim is not an A-list actor. Given the fact that he is in his mid 40s the chances of becoming an A-list actor are kind of getting slimmer every year. That's Hollywood for you. It sucks.
Typecasting is a major problem for most actors. For TV actors is usually even worse. Case in point -- I liked Brent Spiner quite a bit as Data on Star Trek. He is not the worst actor in Hollywood, I'd say. But he never made it on any other type of TV show other than Sci-Fi, even though I see him much more as a comedian. This is how Hollywood works. It's a shame.
One more thing --- I don't see Kurt Russell as an A-list actor. Not anymore.

I was a little apprehensive at the first article but the others have me intrigued. I really like the other actors. Whomever TO plays, we all know he will rock it and maybe he will get to have more of a say in a smaller film role. We know he likes to express himself about his roles.

It's just that Timothy has to STRETCH. This is how actors become really successful.. He has had some really wonderful roles in B movies and in TV. The critics love him in Justified. But I don't know if he has had his "big break" yet. I don't think age is a barrier here. It's just plain luck and a careful choice of roles.
This is a very hard occupation to break into. Let's ask book 39. Her daughter is an actress. We have seen a bit of her work---both comedy and drama. She seems quite talented, and I know we wish her all the best with her career. But I'll bet it is a struggle. A very small percentage of those who are looking for work in the acting field are employed on a regular basis. I think it's 2%, but don't quote me on that.
I can take or leave some of Timothy's early work. To me, his best work has been done in movies like Coastlines, Catch And Release,The Crazies, A Perfect Getaway , The Safety of Objects. You get my drift. He has made his mark in Deadwood, Damages, Justified. He is GOOD. But he may never be the top draw. I get the feeling that this is not his top priority.I get the feeling that he wants to be successful enough to be somewhat well known and employable enough to support his family. I don't think he is a fame whore.
I won't be able to check in on this new movie until I see it. I won't damn him if is awful and was done just to pay the bills. But sadly, he is better than this. I want to see him in great role.

Sounds a bit like English Bob in 'Unforgiven'.
Hell it's a western so I'll be there. I never thought a sci-fi western like 'Cowboys and Aliens' could work and I was down on that film for so long. Then I saw a trailer and it blew me away.
I think this baby might just surprise us all.

Then I saw a trailer and it blew me away. I think this baby might just surprise us all. Sure hope he fares better than English Bob! When this news first broke, the cannibal part of cannibal western seemed sooo unpromising. But I have since become quite stoked about this. I personally enjoy a good western and TO just slides effortlessly into that milieu. He was wonderful as Seth Bullock in Deadwood, as Raylan Givens in Justified (a modern western) and as the Spirit of the West in Rango. So bring on the dapper gunslinger with a dark side willing to help rescue a damsel in distress. I've already got an image of him charging on a horse toward the baddies with his gun blazing. (The image is totally lifted from a bit of Deadwood fan fiction I wrote in my head about a year ago. And it is HOT! ---- Not the fan fiction, just the image. ....) P.S. Daniel Craig made a very convincing cowboy.
