I have so many thought but to start...
In season four he broke the rules and did bounty hunting to get money to take care of Willa. Then tonight he gives away arlo's house...saying he did not need the money...it was...and this is what I love about Raylan..the most honorable thing...yeah he can be an ass...but his soul is pure.
He put his own driven needs aside to save Bob!!!!
Lots more to come....

All.
More to come as well.
But a few things -
- Rylan is still acting like a hero and I am tired of all this "Boyd/Rylan" are the same shit!!!
- I knew where the Marshals hearts lay last week. Art gave Rylan 48 hours. He said no one else was looking for him, He said he was coming for him. That is like Art coming back for him at the end of S2. Not a threat. But to help save him,
- On a "Justified" scale this episode was an "F". That's a "curve" professor WKW. They not only kicked the can down the road for 45 minutes; but the set pieces at the end were very disappointing.
- Rylan is in custody. all for saving Bob's life. Bob had to get shot so Rylan gets detained (again because he is enough of a hero to save Bob). Boyd and Rylan facing off within a few feet of one another; to basically lay bare what each thinks about their intentions and humanity are. Cringe worthy "Ava" getting out of the plastic cuffs easier than Walther White. Then back into real custody with Markham's dirty cops. Loretta going from the daughter-like figure that Rylan saved; to being capable of taking care of herself - while probably bullshitting to stay alive with Markham and the evermore-irritating Boone - sees herself as more Mags than Rylan. Boyd again not getting blown up by dynamite. Again. This time from Zachariah. How many blasts does Boyd get? Oh and lastly we have Duffy not getting out of KY but needed a "Dumb and Dumber" van and a typographical map of Harlan. Really? Duffy is going slumming and putting himself at risk.
Now having said all this ... let me tell you why my Justified "F" - on a curve - is really about kicking the can down the road.
I have no doubts the end was written a long time ago. But this show got caught up in production rush. So much so that - unless FX gives the Kurt Sutter Bow - and gives Justified an elongated final finale - there are a lot of pieces that have to moved around the table for the ending.
But this is why they wrote E12 the way they did. Art and the Marshals have closed ranks. Rylan has not been forgotten by his fellow comrades. All he has is a BOLO out on him. That pulls Rylan out of harms way - obviously - so he can get his badge back after he and is fellow officers argue why the charges are bullshit (note Vasquez's hard-on according to Yost is not ever seen again). The Marshals have Earl which gets them access to Markham.
Rylan and the Marshals close in on Markham which gets them to save Ava. Ava has testimony on Boyd to save herself. Rylan gets Boyd; either by the book or "justified" killing him wearing his badge. Loretta becomes the Queen of Harlan.
I DONT BUY ALL OF THESE MISDIRECTION PLAYS. RYLAN IS A HERO. THE SHOW HAS BEEN PRAISED, FOR NOT JUST USING OLD CHARACTERS, BUT MAKING SIX SEASONS OF JUSTIFIED IMPOSSIBLE TO WATCH WITHOUT WATCHING ALL 13 TIMES 6 EPISODES.
WHAT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO BELIEVE, IS THAT THE SHOW WILL NOT HAVE AN ENDING THAT MAKES EVERYONE WANT TO WATCH THE WHOLE SIX SEASONS AND SEE THE HERO AS THE WINNER.
THERE IS NO MONEY IN RYLAN NOT COMING OUT THE HERO AT THE END.
I am not the literary critic. But I do know no where money comes into the equation. E12 was a great disappointment. Everything now rides on E13. If it ends right ... E12 gets a pass.
Again more later today all,
JC

Dead in here, but early.
One more part of misdirection. Clearly in E13 - from the previews - Rylan is indeed wearing his Marshal badge.
All of this, in my opinion, was emotional misdirection. Maybe the writers think the viewers are stupid. But with Vasquez getting more clowish each week, and what Art was really saying in E11 - he would save Rylan's butt - I don't know what was gained by the this "Rylan Is Bent" coming out of nowhere and not within his character.
Just to go pass the time I guess. Because Rylan is back as a Marshal next week. That's not a surprise. And he is going to win. Some people might be surprised. And I would tell those people you all fell for misdirection.
This season was always about pointing out CLEARLY that Boyd is a BAD MAN, and Rylan is a flawed hero. Period.

Oh, IDK, justifiedceo. I guess I'm just easily amused, but I can't wait to watch it again. Just about everybody's ass is in jeopardy and I want to see how it all falls out. My only questions at this point are if Boyd escapes to live another day, what happens to Ava, and does Loretta finally get "scared straight?" I'd like to see some closure on Duffy, but I think we're supposed to assume that he will continue on his merry way, crooked as ever. It would be interesting if he died a sudden, unexpected death totally unrelated to his past crimes. Like an eighteen-wheeler t-boning his dog grooming truck with no warning. I figure everyone else is going to get what's coming to them, good or bad. The writers tried to make us think that Raylan is done for as a marshal, but it looks like he'll be fine. Like I said on another post a while back, he's dealing with supremely evil criminals here. Going by the book doesn't cut it with these creeps.
And by the way, if I ever need aid from the law and I have a choice between help from Vasquez or Constable Bob, guess who I'd pick? Hope Bob will be alright. He may be about a half bubble off plumb sometimes, but most of the time he's darn brave.

Wow. I too loved this one. Raylan was slipping into the abyss but when Bob needed saving Raylan knew the price and still did the right thing! He is the definition of a driven yet flawed hero. When it comes to Boyd...after so many tries and too many killings Raylan feels compelled to stop Boyd at any cost! Ava may not be saved! She deserves to be but you have Markham, boon, crooked cops and oh yeah...Boyd. Raylan may want to help but he is being detained. Questions here? The cops that caught him are Markham's crew? And Yost teased...who did Ava call for help...we may never know!!!!! And Dewey's necklace is still in the mix!!!! Loretta is the true Harlan child and a survivor. But Markham is the worst choice to play with....could Boon be redeemed by not killing her? Doubt it! Raylan has a full docket so he may be unable to rescue all the damsels...calling Tim in to that role? ? Glad that Raylan is no longer being under BOLO cause any Art confrontation with Raylan must be words only. And hey the money issue I mentioned? Plus they had the ten mil at grubes and then poof they didn't! That money...where is it? Vasquez was a dick and his hatred of Raylan...wow! And that was his final scene! Double wow!

Good episode, not great, but a perfect set up for the final ride. Question: Who was Ava calling when she was running? According to GY post mordem. www.yahoo.com/tv/justified-collateral-recap-postmortem-115782545995.html Would she be calling, Boyd...Markham...Duffy...Loretta? Seems everyone and their mama will be after that money next week. Is Ava working with someone to help her out of Harlan with the money? Or working with Markham to try and get the money back to him and save herself? How many ways can Boyd escape death? The mine, twice, Ava's shooting, escaping Raylan's bullets? What exactly are the writers doing here? Seems like overkill now. If Boyd dies next week, it will be anti-climatic for me, since he's escaped death so many times this season. I'm not surprised Uncle Z blew himself up, hoping to kill Boyd...for the third time. Hard to believe he'd try that one again. Predictions: Me thinks Ava is going to get out of Harlan alive. Now that Uncle Z is dead, Ava is the only one who knows where the rest of the money is hidden. Not sure what's going to happen to Boyd. I'm a bit confused on that. Part of me thinks he will die, the other thinks he was the one on the phone call with Ava, and they will leave together with or without the money. Loretta will survive and run Harlan. Markham will die or give up the chase and leave Harlan. Or he will team up with Loretta and they will both run Harlan. Boone will die, not sure who will do the deed, though. Probably Raylan, but that would be very predictable at this point. Not sure if the writers are going with predictable next week. Duffy will get out of Harlan alive. And Raylan will lose or relinquish his badge, to save the integrity of the Marshal's office, and head back to Florida with his family. I really hope I'm right on at least a couple of these predictions. I feel sad talking about the end of the show. It's really happening next week.

If the badge is gone...what does that mean for Raylan? In his soul he is 100% a LEO. Only other option...sell ice cream! And since he just gave away the only asset he owns...money must be addressed. Winona isn't working. How bout the Indian lane house? Did our boy sell it when we weren't watching?

Winona isn't working. How bout the Indian lane house? Did our boy sell it when we weren't watching? I doubt the writers are worried about Raylan post Marshal's service. That would be another story. With his skills, he could go into private security consulting or teaching. But that's just an idea.

Sadly will we ever know? Been thinking (like for the last time) that he moved to Miami once before and maybe has a house there that he rents out. He did say he'd be all settled in when talking to Winona after this transfer. And the badge...it cost him his marriage, the love of his life so losing it now just says so much. He is sacrificing it to stop Boyd once and for all!
And watched it again....Boyd seems to have yet another fool backing him and....the cops arresting Raylan are not Markham's men...
I am betting Duffy is the one Ava reached out to...but if Markham has her Duffy can not save her.
Is Raylan killing Boyd brought on by the certainty that Boyd is going to kill Ava? Money first but kill Ava rates a close second?
Thought we'd have so much discussion on this...you all have lives...good for you!!!!

Wow. Okay...I've watched again, and read everyone's posts, so I think I'm ready to make some observations and maybe...just maybe, a prediction or two. Sorry, JCEO, I give this episode an 'A'. I loved it. Raylan really did go off the rails. He was set to murder Boyd, and very well might have, but saving Bob came first. Raylan's humanity won out over his need for vengeance or victory or whatever it is that keeps him coming after Boyd Crowder. And whatever that is, Raylan recognized that it had nothing to do with his Marshal's star, and so he left it behind. The fact that he has picked it up again in the previews makes me wonder if the showdown we're all expecting will really happen. I'm beginning to think that Raylan isn't going to kill Boyd. And I'm fine with that. Wynn Duffy for the win. My money is on him getting the money, or at least part of it and hightailing it out of Harlan in his Dog-Grooming truck. Who did Ava call? At first I thought Limehouse...but now I'm wondering if she called Duffy. He did ask that fixer for TWO passports. Boon is the wildcard. But, he did say something about always shooting for the head in case someone is wearing kevlar. My bet? He shoots the hat. Elmore hated that hat. Raylan lives. Elmore's protagonists live. Loretta is the new Queen of Harlan. I think Ava gets away. Boyd is the one I'm not sure about. Maybe he dies, maybe he gets a fate worse than death in prison.

I saw none of this coming, the writers continue to surprise me.
I especially liked the scene on the mountainside, in darkness, between Raylan and Boyd. It was beautifully photographed! and I liked the dialogue. And who did Ava call, while on the run? Duffy? Limehouse? Katherine (she wouldn't know about the chaos in the motor coach)? I'm thinking Duffy, most likely.
more later...had to work all day today, unable to post til tonight.

Bob was good wasn't he...I knew Raylan would go to his rescue. And loved the scene of Boyd and Raylan on the mountainside in the dark...what does Raylan know about Boyd's recent spree...he knows he killed Carl, he does not know about the civilian in the truck, he probably suspects that Boyd killed Dewey, but no proof. and now he knows Boyd shot Bob, attempted murder? Worried about Ava the moment she stepped on to that bridge...does she not understand keeping out of sight while everyone is looking for you?
And what about the rest of the money...did Zachariah and Ava bury it somewhere, maybe never to be seen again?

I think it is a better punishment for Boyd to be imprisoned for the mayhem and murder he has caused, especially this season...he would rather die than go to jail again, I think, so that makes it more satisfying to me. And I don't think Raylan will kill him now, unless it is life or death for him. If Boyd is locked up, Ava can survive, after testifying against markham (If the marshals rescue her from Markham, hard to know if that will happen)...but Ava is a criminal too and she may have to go back to jail...shooting Boyd, taking the money, pullin a gun on a US Marshal, besides what she did in the past... does not look good for her. Hope Bob survives, hope Loretta survives... I'd like to see Raylan making a call to Winona, " On my way, just like I told ya, kiss the kiddo for me!"

Maybe the showdown was more a battle inside Raylan! His demons are gone more or less and then he was on a downward trend...til Bob needed to be rescued...look at the genuine care in Raylan as he races to save Bob.
And then we have Boyd and who he really is! Raylan may want Boyd stopped and sees a bullet as the only recourse. But Boyd is a whole different...as he brags...I am an outlaw...allowing him to repeatedly kill...with no regret.
Maybe in the end we have seen their individual showdowns...the gunplay will be the results.

My Tally All (and Mare I did not type caps for emotion, but for emphasis, w/o the ability to use bold letters ... but my passion was white hot when I wrote it ) 1. My grade isn't shared by this forum nor every review of the episode. Almost all were A's. Only Indie Wire shared some of my sardonic thoughts. On this "grade" I concede. Perhaps I am in the "anger stage" of the 7 stages of Justified death. 2. I could have sworn I posted that Ava must be talking to Duffy. I think I actually must have been typing an email for work at the same time ... doing my job .... instead of my passion. Can't be LimeHouse, because he disowned her. That's why Duffy is getting the Dumb and Dumber truck. BUT THERE IS SOMETHING MORE SUBTLE ABOUT THIS ACT. Duffy and Ava - in the life of crime - are "rats". I never saw LimeHouse as a big bad. I always saw LimeHouse more like God. All knowing. Judging right from wrong. And casting out "sinners". With Ava in Markham's hands, I am not sure Duffy gets anywhere near the money. AGAIN I DON'T THINK THAT IS WHY THIS IS GOING TO BE WRITTEN. I think if forces the viewer to confront that Ava isn't innocent in all of this. 3. Rylan/Boyd confrontation. Going to have to agree with everyone that for a small amount of time, Rylan went rogue. Bob snapped him back in place. MY PROBLEM WITH ALL OF THIS - AGAIN - WAS THE MUTI-EPISODE THREAD OF "RYLAN BEING BENT" AS TO THE MONEY. Rogue yes. Bent? No. Ultimately what is saving him is Art knew he wasn't bent; hence trying to protect him and getting his badge back. But to pull off this multi-episode "bent" storyline, it forced Vasquez to first look like he was being vindictive and then it forced Vasquez to lose it. I know there has been tension in the past. But in order to pull of the "bent" 360 degree circle they had to make Vasquez be out of character. I DIDN'T LIKE THAT. 4. I would argue that if the only thing Boyd loves is Boyd - I have too many times said this in the past - Rylan MOSTLY loves his badge. He protected his badge for an episode. He gets it back in E13. If I am correct, Rylan living and changing careers is not the right ending. No. He either lives or dies with his badge. To Rylan - even though he is a hero - in his emotionally crippled way - he can only see himself as a hero when he is wearing his badge. Normal people don't have to use their professions to justify their humanity. How many times has Rylan pulled out his star to tell bad guys he is on the right side of the law and they are on the other side? He always does this with Boyd. No the badge stays on Rylan dead or alive. 5. Going back to last season, I thought the banter of the cartel members, saying "let's not kill him, lets put him in a cage ... this dude is hilarious", showed the most pain I ever saw on Boyd. Boyd isn't afraid of death. Boyd is afraid of not being in control. Prison is his worse punishment. Boyd has to die or go to prison. They have peeled his inner character so bare, that the viewer is left with no grayness when it comes to Boyd. 6. Everything is in place for Rylan to get Markham which gets Ava to some level of safety. Her going back into prison. W/o Vasquez I don't think her ending has to be anything more than her body was saved. Everything is in place for Rylan to get the money. Everything is in place to save Loretta from Boon. And everything is in place to get Boyd. 7. So I will continue to stick to my unwavering belief that Rylan wins everything next week. JC

In checking IMDb they only list boon as a guest star for next week! Think they want to surprise us!
Predictions:
Duffy goes against type and saves Ava with the marshals then arresting her and Markham. Zach dies with the location of the money taken with him...ha ha.
Boyd takes a bullet...a not fatal from Raylan and yes this time he means to not kill cause this time they have Boyd for murder...of dewey!!!!! Caged for life.
Boon calls out Raylan on that road! Loretta is a captive in the car. The big drawdown leaves Raylan with a wound and a notch on his belt cause Boon dies and he rescues Loretta one more time.,..she does become the pot queen of Harlan!
And Raylan packs and leaves Harlan with Art's blessings and his badge. To be a dad. To try again and this time succeed with Winona.
And Art does retire and moves to Miami. And is Raylan's voice of reason....

If Boyd goes to prison, I doubt it will be for the death of Dewey. To charge Boyd with killing Dewey, they would have to prove he did it first. Raylan has already said as much to Ava. They need a body and murder weapon, or someone who can testify that they saw him kill Dewey.
Carl's dead, and I believe he was the only witness to Dewey's death.
The RICO case is dead. So any current charges against Boyd would be the death of the truck driver, stealing Markham's money, and shooting Constable Bob. which is enough to keep him for life. Duffy is the only living witness who could actually testify as a witness to Boyd's past transgressions, as they were partners in crime. And I don't think Duffy is going to be in Harlan long enough to testify against Boyd or anyone else. Plus, he'd have to incriminate himself.

Well I loved this episode! It rates an ‘A’ from me. (Sorry, JCEO, but you are a cult of one on this score. First, this has been niggling at me, but was that or was that not Powers Boothe playing one of the Hill People----- specifically the one glaring at Raylan when he was told to lay his weapon down? Re-watch that scene and tell me if that actor isn’t his doppelganger? (I just posted that question on the Yost postmortem page. I hope Mandi asks him about that. Maybe I’m wrong or maybe they sprinkled a little more Deadwood gold dust on our favorite show.)

Well, they do know Boyd killed Carl. Because he did that right in the hospital.

First of all, where have you been Kentucky Girl??!! Or did I just miss that you were posting. Old school I already copped to being in my own prison camp. An outlier. But enough to know I am wrong. Another Mea Culpa. But bears repeating to an old friend. 1. Dewey's neckless - the only reason it fell out was to show where Ava was picked up. Count of the good guys to use GPS to tie her abduction to the dirty police officers. 2. Carl's death? Body? Yes. Matching a gun of the many of Boyd? No way. Putting two and two together that Boyd escaped? See point #1. Witness is tainted. And he could have shot Carl and let Boyd go. Anyone id Boyd in a police hat? Oh, he was shot and was killed. 3. If Bob lives - they have him for attempted murder of an officer. The same charge they faked making on the youngest Crowe. Now wouldn't that be a bookend? But I doubt Bob is back on the last episode. Or he dies. 4. I think the cockroach - always outsmarting people and greedy Boyd - ends up incriminating himself on the final episode. Now that's irony. They had nothing on him. And he made their case because of his own hubris and greed. JC
