Hiya! I've been lurking for awhile and thought it's about time I say hello and introduce myself! My name is Laura and I've been a Timothy Olyphant fan since high school. "Go" was the first time and I saw him and said "Yowza". Since Justified premiered my crush has been blossoming steadily and a few months ago I started looking for some outlet for this building infatuation. Then I found this board! So.... Hiya!
I guess I'll start with a question. IMDB and several other websites have his "unusual posture" listed as a trademark. What's that all about? I have seen him in a lot of movies and I would say that TO definitely moves differently than other people. There's a sort of fluidity and measure to his walk and gestures that I find to be incredibly sexy. But his posture? I don't think he stands any differently. When someone says "unusual posture" I think of someone with a really bad case of scoliosis. Any idea why he's been branded with this characteristic?
Thanks!
-Laura B

Welcome, Ibookie! You are in good company, among TO fanatics. What I have noticed is that he is noticeably 'flexible' in the joints. (My sister is too. I don't know the proper name for it ... maybe hyper flexible joints? My sis calls it being 'double jointed,' but it's not literally double jointed.) It's not a bad thing. Quite the contrary. Many gymnasts have this quality. Maybe some swimmers, too? I first noticed 'it' in the first Justified ep I ever saw: Season 2, Reckoning. When he first walks into his Aunt Helen's house and they show his boots walking around evidence markers and blood spatters on the floor. His ankles effortlessly twist and turn and (that would hurt most of us IF we could even do it ... My sis can do it, too). Sometimes looking a little 'pidgeon toed' but not all the time .... only when it suits his movement. And I've noticed it other times, too. It makes his walk (which we CRAZY LOVE!!!) so cat-like and sexy. He's fluid when he moves. He's like Gumby! It is truly subtle and unique and sets him apart in more than all his obvious ways. Anyway, that's my take.

I think he stands like a dancer or a dressage rider. He's poised, balanced, centered, framed, whatev. He's got such good posture, it's unusual in a California surfer type. That's my take.
I think the way he moves is a whole 'nother situation. Those of us who ride horses know the importance of balance and centrality with regard to movement. I would imagine a swimmer is quite aware of how to manipulate his body to get the most out of his efforts. Man's like a puma stalking his prey. Fluid and graceful, powerful and sexy. Standing like a dancer, all balanced and ready for controlled movement, apparently gives you the freedom to ooze like liquid sex when you saunter onto the scene all boots and hats and tight fitting jeans.

Now i'm going to have to re-watch Reckoning and check out his footwork! And yes, FRAMED! That's the perfect description of how he stands. And yes, controlled. Measured. Like no movement is without purpose, no energy wasted. Liquid sex indeed! You are a poet.

Thanks all! I feel so welcomed! The picture IS so Raylan. You can't even see his face really but it's one of sexiest shots of character out there (IMO). Just goes to show it's about attitude more than looks. But of course, instead of seeing his face, you do get to see those loose HIPS, like you said. And all the bulging in all the right places...

I read somewhere that his walk was "foreplay" and I think that pretty much covers the subject perfectly. We get lots of foreplay in Justified....some classic walks that leave a woman's heart racing......The Reckning was prime...so was some of Bulletville. Not that I was looking. FX is again blocking logging in so it is so wonderful to have this place to come to.

Ya know what? I don't think there is a big secret to Tim's posture. Some people have a natural grace and some, like me, are just klutzy. Tim is tall. thin and agile. He moves with cat-like grace. Some people are just blessed with that. It may be part genetic, but I think some of it comes from being an athlete. Like some of you mentioned, athletes learn how to move in order to compete and perform well. After a while it becomes natural.I have a few friends who have been athletic all of their lives---tennis, swimming, marathons, etc. They are coordinated, graceful people. It's just my opinion that Tim is naturally graceful and had the added advantage of having enhanced this by being involved in activities that keep him very supple and agile. We are lucky to be able to enjoy this, girls!

In the scene where he steps through Helen's house as a crime scene, the way his boots twisted and turned was AMAZING! LOL Like many of you, I watch his walk. A lot. Is it me? Or does he favor one hip? I don't recall seeing that in earlier works. I heard him say in interviews that he made a hard landing in filming 'A Perfect Getaway,' but I may be reading too much into it.

I remember that interview, Dolphin. He said he really hurt himself in that fall. But I can't recall if he said he hurt his hip or back. Perhaps it's just his swagger.

He said he landed on his feet (felt it in the legs, ended up on his keister). I can't imagine it didn't mess him up. I got rear ended years and years ago (not even a bad one, thank goodness). Chiropractor keeps me in check but sometimes, especially when I'm tires or overdo it. Yowza. Maybe that's how he walks for Raylan's character. But I wonder.

If anyone ever bothered to make a movie about dressage rather than grown guys in costume, explosions or juvenile humor.
