I thought this would be fun after bluerain and I were talking about Sherlock. What are your all-time favorite shows? What do you recommend? I'm currently watching Dark, a German show on Netflix that I think is way better than Stranger Things, which I think is overrated. But I tend to rewatch shows over and over, and can always use recommendations for new shows. I can't recommend Fargo enough. I ignored the hype and didn't watch it until after the third season, which let me binge watch. It's just phenomenal and it's really not related to the movie at all, so if you didn't see that, don't let that stop you. My Desert Island shows, alphabetized.... Drama: - Black Mirror (excluding the awful last season!)
- Breaking Bad (my all-time fave)
- Dark
- Deadwood
- Dexter
- Downton Abbey
- Fargo
- Freaks and Geeks
- Happy Valley
- House
- Justified
- Lost
- Luther
- Money Heist (La Casa de Papel)
- Sherlock
- The Walking Dead
Comedy: - Arrested Development
- Friends
- The Office
- Monty Python
- Parks & Recreation
- Seinfeld
- Sex & The City
- The Simpsons
I know there are ones I'm forgetting. Everyone recommends The Wire but I haven't been able to get into it. I think Game of Thrones is sooo overrated. I stopped watching around the third season. I really love British TV. Cannot wait for the Downton Abbey movie. Btw I hate all reality TV but the Great British Bake Off is the exception. What a show! We don't have feel-good reality TV in the USA.

One of my other older fave comedies was Sex and the City and when I saw the Twenty-something ep with Tim, at that point I did not even know he existed! Of course, now that ep is my all time fave Sex and the City ep. Young Tim and his aluminum hands dream And he was darling as Samantha's bald and beautiful man in Samantha Who? Tim was too hot in The League ep where he was the white sushi chef! Priceless!

Ha ha the aluminum hands dream just kills me... so funny.
But what are your favorite shows in general, not just Tim?

Drama: Casualty (BBC hospital drama) Holby (spin-off of Casualty) Justified A Series of Unfortunate Events
Comedy: SCD Fawlty Towers Only Fools & Horses Spaced The IT Crowd Dave Allen
Currently one episode into Catch 22, brilliant, captures a lot of humour & detail from the book.
On a slight off-topic curve, I downloaded a horror comedy film recently called What We Do in the Shadows. It's a mockumentary about a group of vampires sharing a house in current day Wellington, New Zealand. It's hilarious, bit like SCD in that it juxtaposes everyday life problems, like arguing over the chores rota, with killing people to eat. Well worth a watch.

Here are my favorites. Not in alphabetical order because my brain can’t function that well yet this morning. 😬
Dramas: Supernatural Justified Numb3rs Jag Shooter White Collar Grey’s Anatomy (but I haven’t watched since season 11. Shonda rhymes pissed me off) Daredevil Ozark
Comedy: The Office Friends Parks and Recreation Santa Clarita Diet Ballers Nailed It
If I think of more I will add them. That’s all I can come up with at the moment. I tend to watch the same shows over and over again and it takes me forever to find/get into new shows.
I also thought Stranger Things was way overrated. The first season was really good but I couldn’t get into the second season at all. I couldn’t get into GOT either, I watched like 7 episodes and can’t tell you a single thing that happened.

That's one of my absolute faves for sure. I can't believe I forgot it. I have watched it over and over and even have a tnetennba t-shirt. I also am one of like four Americans who has seen Father Ted, another great one from the same creator. I loved What We Do in the Shadows... with Jermaine from Flight of the Conchords (another one on my list come to think of it). They're making a TV series version too. I love British panel shows too. I have to watch Would I Lie to You, 8 Out of 10 Cats, and Big Fat Quiz etc online.

Chris O'Dowd seems like another actor Hollywood doesn't know what to do with. He's had some small roles + that terrible sci-fi The Cloverfield Paradox, but nothing that really utilizes his comic talent.

Chris O'Dowd was great in the Lance Armstrong drama. I agree Hollywood doesn't know what to do with him. He can do drama just as well as he can do comedy, and this seems to confuse people. I think he has a really bright future. The IT Crowd has a huge cult following here. When he was on Colbert, the audience went nuts when Colbert mentioned it while introducing him. It's endlessly quotable. Richard Ayoade is completely the man of my dreams. He has that perfect self-deprecating thing down. He just destroys on every panel show. Ahh how could I forget Garth Marenghi!? Another gem. I also thought Stranger Things was way overrated. The first season was really good but I couldn’t get into the second season at all. I couldn’t get into GOT either, I watched like 7 episodes and can’t tell you a single thing that happened. I think I managed about two or three seasons of GOT... I liked Jason Momoa but after he was written out, my interest waned.... no more sex scenes with hot Dothraki guys. The brother-sister sex just creeps me out too much. It just seems like bad fan fiction. Just because you write a LOT doesn't mean you write WELL. I tend to watch the same stuff over and over too. I always have something playing. Oh, 30 Rock!!!! Definitely one of my top five fave shows. Such a shame Tim was never on that one. He would have crushed it.

These are some of my favs, in no particular order:
Comedy: Derrygirls Santa Clarita Diet The Detour Curb your Enthusiasm. Life in Pieces. Happy Endings. Arrested Development. Toast of London. Seinfeld.
Drama: Justified Inspector Montalbano (Italian) The Bridge (Danish) The Killing (Danish) Borgen (Danish) Trapped (Icelandic)

Wow, I must watch some of these shows! Some of my faves, even though they don't have Tim, are Luther with Idris and Ruth Wilson and Sensitive Skin with Kim Cattrall.
Some of the Black Mirror eps are fabulous and I also love Mrs. Maisel. Breaking Bad is one of my all time faves!
And I got so many laughs with 30 Rock! Tim would have rocked that show!
Modern Family, in it's last season, is one I love to watch, also.
So many shows, but never enough time!

I need to check out some of these shows. I saw parts of a couple episodes of the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel a couple weeks ago in between naps and meant to start it from the beginning but I haven’t gotten to it yet. I love Zachary Levi. Speaking of whom, Chuck is also one of my all time favorite shows.
All the incest in GOT turned me off from it. I didn’t even realize Jason Momoa was in it until I tried watching it again earlier this summer. I rewatched the pilot and I was like huh totally missed Jason Momoa the first time I watched.

Lots of good suggestions here! I'm a sucker for a good miniseries too. I'm watching The Little Drummer Girl, a John le Carré one, because I just realized I never finished it. Florence Pugh is amazing.
Give The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel another try. It's really good though it helps if you find the subject matter (stand-up) interesting. Rachel Brosnahan is phenomenal. You'd never imagine she was an Irish girl from the midwest, the way she nails that accent. We're spoiled with how great TV is these days.
Oh, the original Law & Order was great. Definitely a top 10. Oh and Line of Duty, another British police show. So addicting!

Just finished HBO's Chernobyl. Absolutely riveting from start to finish. The level of detail and commitment to historical accuracy is astounding. It deserves to win all the miniseries awards.
It's tough to watch but it's so wonderfully told and not a thing like the typical disaster movie, where it all builds up to the disaster, which happens halfway through. One of the best stories about human failure and human sacrifice.
The creator and writer also did a podcast after each episode with a guy from NPR, to discuss details and which part was fact and which was fiction. The most bizarre twists are pure fact.

I've had Chernobyl on my list but I haven't gotten to it yet. I'm so bad at watching new shows. I have to really be in the mood for it and lately I haven't been.
Has anyone watched Jack Ryan? I binged that when it came out last year and it was so good. It can be violent and difficult to watch at times but its definitely worth it. I watched 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi again over the weekend which got me thinking about Jack Ryan. Hopefully there will be a release date for season 2 soon. I still can't believe John Krasinski went from dorky Office Jim to ripped/hot soldier in 13 Hours and Jack Ryan.

I watched about 30 seconds of Jack Ryan before I got distracted. That's how bad I am. I actually had the same ADHD with Chernobyl and tuned in after the first episode, but didn't make it even through the first scene. If something doesn't grab me from the opening 5 seconds I look at my phone or ipad and end up pausing it and I'm done. But I returned to it when I saw it was the top TV show ever on IMDB. The good part of that is I get to binge through it when I finally do watch.
But Jack Ryan is on my list of things to watch still. Amazon keeps promoting it to me now, and John Krasinski can do no wrong. Hope we get him on Conan's podcast soon.

I didn't really get hooked on Jack Ryan until the end of the first episode or maybe it was the second. It starts out kind of slow but really picks up as you go. My only issue with it was the girl they cast as the love interest is Australian and has a horrible American accent. It is awesome to see John Krasinski get away from Jim Halpert. I love Jim, he and Pam are the reason I got so into the office, but it is nice to see John branch out from the lovable dorky characters. And yes, I would also love to hear him on Conan's podcast or even Andy's new podcast.

I agree Abbie Cornish is miscast completely. She really annoys me and is actually pretty bad in this. Her face never changes and her performances are so flat. She's just sort of ... there. But I love everything else so far. I also just watched Free Meek on Amazon... it's a docuseries. I knew absolutely nothing about the case (and know very little about rap) but was floored by the whole thing. It's almost like Making a Murderer. It just keeps getting weirder and weirder and weirder. It really opened my eyes into how bad things are. I knew police were corrupt but this is insane, and that judge of his is certifiable. It's gripping and actually sort of short (five episodes of about 40 minutes each) so highly recommend!

I've been rewatching Jack Ryan with a friend over the last few weeks. Abbie Cornish is hard to watch, her character lacks personality and her accent goes from kind of American, to kind of British sounding, to kind of Australian sounding and its really annoying/distracting. I'm not familiar with any of her other work so I don't know if she was miscast or is really just not a great actress. It's disappointing because otherwise the casting in Jack Ryan is pretty spot on.
Amazon just put out the season 2 trailer for Jack Ryan a couple weeks ago but no word on a release date yet. The season 1 trailer debuted I think 6 months before season 1 was released. I really hope we don't have to wait that long for season 2.

At first I thought the character of Jim Greer was going to be stereotypical, like Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon, but I was relieved to find a lot of depth there. Abbie Cornish isn't in the trailer for season two at all, right? I hope she's gone for good! They said season two will come out before the end of the year so I'm also hoping soon. The first one came out at the end of August! I think Mrs Maisel always drops in December so hopefully it will come out before that. I watched the whole thing and I'm watching it again. I love how they gave so much background to the "bad guys" and explained how they were marginalized... no cartoon villains. And they allowed people to speak their native language and dubbed it instead of having them speak English to each other (my pet peeve). The locations were tremendous too. This is all about where they shot it: Beyond Borders | Jack Ryan's Location Teams

I wasn't a huge fan of Greer at first but he really turned out to be a decent character that I could care about. Jack and Greer played off each other well. My only other issue with season 1 was the whole subplot with the drone operator. That really made no sense to me and seemed unnecessary, especially the sex/beating scene early on in the season. Unfortunately, according to Screenrant, Abbie Cornish will be back for season 2 and John Hoogenakker who played Matice, the CIA Black Ops guy, was promoted to series regular. It also predicts a fall release. And season 3 has already been greenlit, of course season 2 was also picked up before season 1 even aired so apparently Amazon is really liking what is happening with Jack Ryan (I wish Netflix would take a play from Amazon's book on this).

Totally agree about the drone operator. I actually liked that storyline by itself (it's rather sick what they are doing, as he explained, with no risk to themselves and making mistakes) but it totally didn't fit! The Streetcar Named Desire casino plotpoint, with him meeting Stanley Kowalski and Blanche DuBois, was so dumb and made no sense at all. I liked when it fit into the main storyline but otherwise it was just distracting. I was really confused on my first watch who he even was. Ugh about Abbie Cornish being back.... hopefully it's just in one episode to break up with him. I don't know what's wrong with her... maybe she's addicted to Botox. No expression whatsoever!

Amazon annouced the release date for Jack Ryan Season 2 with a new trailer the other day. November 1st is when it will go live. As a side note, I've been watching Curb Your Enthusiasm lately but I just don't get it. I've only seen like 6 episodes so far but I'm not sure I get all the hype about the show. And the camera work is really throwing me off, it just seems like it has no budget and was shot with 1 camera guy who was holding a fancier version of a camcorder. I really wanted to like the show but I struggle to get through it. Is it like The Office or Parks and Recreation where it took the a season or two to hit their stride?

I think CYE got funnier and smoother, but it's the same basic humor. It's actually not a show I ever bingewatched though. Very Seinfeldian ("show about nothing") so it might not be your cup of tea, humor wise. But I'm sure Tim's episode will be hilarious to you no matter what!
