I have been using www.tv.com to post insights into Justified and Fargo in lieu of the FX forum.
First a shout out to my old friends from the old FX forum!
Second, quite a few of my posts on www.tv.com were highlighted. I am not sure they save them; but if they do you can find them there.
Third, I would appreciate hearing from my old and new friends on this board.
Finally here are some of my thoughts on S5 of Justified and S6 of Justified -
Season 5 -
As a Justified freak, I have all episodes on iTunes. I have recently watched all of them on a recent 18 hour plane ride.
And they help me to see how the characters, the storyline and quality has morphed from S1 to S5.
1. The great dialog has been consistent.
2. Raylan is decidedly more serious and attached in Season 1. By season 5, Raylan becomes less serious and detached. At times, almost to the point of winking at the audience.
3. This is all consistent with TO becoming a producer and having major input into the show. TO sees the show as a comedy. He has said he wants it to be like Curb Your Enthusiasm. While Justified is a great dramedy; TO's influence has amped up the comedy component.
4. Each of the first four seasons are timeless and were truly unique. S1 with great standalone pieces while morphing so its main characters are defined more by the end. S2 .... what can you say .... simply the best season of Justified. Justified is at its best when we see Raylan being a hero. Particularly impactful was his scenes with Loretta. They still, as a father of a child at similar age, make me tear up. S3 brought two more GREAT antagonists. Quarles and Limehouse. The latter I would watch as its own show. S4 on closer examination - while most of the old gang spent time on the forum guessing who was Drew - now seems a risky but winning bet of moving the show along with a mystery. So each of the first four seasons were all great and the bar was set high for S5.
5. I believe S5, while frankly disappointing on a relative basis, now in hind sight had to be a transitional season to set up the final season. The big bad and the various story lines were filler. S5 had to put its three main characters - Raylan, Boyd and Ava - into positions where they are set up in the right position for S6.
Season 6 -
1. Obviously in theory the main arc has to be the tension of the BIG 3 playing out until the end of the show.
2. Raylan can't be killed. Why? Because Elmore's estate and son have a vested interest in future books that feature Raylan.
3. I would like to see Justified, as one interesting story line, break the Kentucky color barrier. Enough ditzy blonds for Raylan. I would like to see Raylan and Rachel (Erica Tazel) have a tryst. Helping to see if she is corrupted by Raylan from her pristine position or she better understands why she can't be like Raylan. Has anyone noticed how - model like - Erica is? She is stunning. They have been building chemistry for five seasons. She does care about Raylan. And frankly it would spice up the show and put some crackers aback.
4. Last one for now, because I have to get to my real job , I find that Yost is very self-aware. He has admitted S5 was diminished to set up S6. And he knows Justified's last season will decide whether the show is good or great. I am betting on him, TO, and the writers to hit it out of the ball park next year! And I am counting the days.
