Just watched this one. Don't know if anyone is interested in talking about it?
Don't want to spoil anything...

Don't read if you want to see it without being influenced...............
it's got a young and sometime less than fully clothed TO. Cynthia Nixon is the lead woman. An incredible free form dance performed by TO on the stage of a theater production, a romantic dance on a roof top to a Billy Holiday song, a dive into a lake to save a struggling friend...TO was the best thing about it...but I really found very little chemistry between the two leads with the exception of the roof scene. And the female lead was quite a shrew in some major scenes, hardly sympathetic. The ending was very high school pageant, in a diner with everyone listening in to the two main characters conversation...but he was lovely to look at and had the best dialog I thought of anyone in this film. I saw enough clips from this on youtube to want to own it, so found it on amazon. Glad I got it, but not my favorite of the earlier TO films. But he does catch your eye and hold it, more that any of the other actors.

Oh my dear, we talked about this film at length here an on the FX forum. He is at his most lovely of his "youthful roles" in this film. He was not long out of the pool when this was filmed in NY, as he gave swim lessons at some point in that era.
The reason this is so silly is that it is really a play sandwiched into a movie.
Member Alphamare is also a fan of this one. And there is another fan of this film, a gentleman from a certain gay forum, who has seen the goods displayed, but expertly edited and obscured, by Cynthia Nixon's spiky hair. To quote the film-editor's friend, "Fucking Enormous." LOL.
I recommend paying at half speed the scene in the laundry where he changes his shirt and pulls up those britches on that perfect swimmer's ass. He's got bare feet there too, if that's a bonus.
Otherwise, you can do what I do, watch the expertly edited "roll over" scene and yell "Damn you, Cynthia, more that spiky head of yours!"
BTW, I did relate tho the girl who didn't want to fall in love, who wanted to avoid the complications and just have a career, so I guess I did have a little sympathy, especially when she falls for the most "complicating" man ever. I got the idea behind the character, but not all the freaky late '90s art scene stuff

I agree with MCM. He is just too cute and hot in this film. It's one of my guilty pleasures. Mare27 ... I'm glad you got to see this one, dated as it is.

thanks for all your comments, I realize this film is older and I am very late to the party...I was hoping it would be better than it turned out to be...that being said, he was great to look at, as always! I knew going in I was not watching it for the character studies or the scenery...I knew about that "roll-over" scene! I was hoping for "outtakes" but alas no special features on this DVD. Have a great night!

Have a great night! I was relatively late to the party, too. We all gotta start TO some time, and finding/watching his old stuff is like going on an Easter Egg hunt. He's done so many different and varied things. Speaking of different than any of the ones we've talked about, have you seen The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy or The Safety of Objects?

I just lent The Safety of Objectsand much of my other Olyphant collection to one of my colleagues, a Justified fan and TO swooner. She dropped it off in my office/cube and exclaimed Wow! that was NOT a comedy.. She said BF left the room at one point and said "I don't like where this is going."
The story line is revealed like peeling back the layers of an Onion. The whole cast is superb in The Saftey of Objects . Definitely take time for that one...and don't feel too old when you see Kristen Stewart as a child. LOL.
FX is still live bu it's very difficult to read after the "compression" of the forum. It was re-coced and all the spaces were taken out of the text code. I wonder if we broke it, girls, with our thousand post "who said it." game?

Dolphin-I have Broken Hearts Club and Safety of Objects. I quite like the first one, even though I was leary...but mostly it was fun and I was glad I watched it. I did not regret buying it. Safety of Objects, not so much...odd and very uncomfortable at moments....but Tim looked good. Lots of really good actors in this but the story was weak and hard to buy.
oh oh, the emmy's announcements just popped on, live streaming on the gold derby site....later

I'd love to see this movie along with no vacancy just to see a young TO but just can't seem to get my hands on it. Was annoyed that the Irish netflix doesn't carry no vacancy when I think the US one does.

Advice From a Caterpillar is available on DVD. (I own this DVD. MCM is right ... it's worth owning ... he's gorgeous in this movie even though he's the best thing in it by far. It's only for a true fan.) Or maybe look for them on ebay? Both are worth seeing. Just keep cinematic expectations low and you won't be disappointed. We all gotta start somewhere.

I love seeing him as a "baby" he was soooo cute. I have a lot of his old stuff I got from Amazon or Play.com Sorcha, they are usually fairly cheap although I did get No Vacancy and discovered it was region one (my player isn't!) but I managed to watch it on my desktop.

Wedgie, you can buy gizmos on eBay which unlock DVD players and make them multi region. Mine cost about 12 quid. I got it so I could watch Coastlines which I got from the US.

I don't think it is available anywhere anymore, for purchase or streaming. I have seen select scenes posted on youtube and what not but I don't think you can find the whole movie anywhere. It is not available on iTunes or Amazon. Perhaps there is a DVD copy floating around on ebay or something.

I think I actually bought this on DVD but have never watched... I might be confusing it with 1999 though. I have no idea where it is!
