I know we discussed this show last season, but I don't remember which folder it was in??
Season 2 premiered this week. It's no 'Justified,' but it's pretty good during the summer haitus. I think its way better than the now cancelled 'Vegas.'

I just started watching this show. It is pretty good, I wasn't so sure at first. I watched the first episode of season two and I'm almost done watching season one already.

I haven't watched this one but I did catch an episode of Vegas, because I like Dennis Quaid. I thought it was pretty bad, he seemed to be there in body but not in mind.

I really like this show. It's not as dark and twisty, nor as humourous as Justified, but the acting and the stories are good.
And yes, it's way better than Vegas. Dennis Quaid, Micheal Chiklis, and Jason O'Mara deserve better.

It took me a few episodes to get into it, too, Meowtwist. But I'm glad I did. It's a good summer replacement. (There is so much garbage on TV this summer ... I can hardly believe it.)

I loved him on "Life on Mars." Then, he went to Fox's failed "Terra Nova" (thank God Kyle Chandler passed on that role), and now ... this. This goes to show, the networks can't bring on a bunch of big names and expect us to love a show. And even the great CBS can fail.

I suppose we can't expect every one of our favourite actors to be as invested in his show as our man is.

I started reading Craig Johnson's 'Longmire' series in 2006. (By the way, the newest novel in that series, 'A Serpent's Tooth', comes out June 4).
When I read in November of 2011, that there was going to a be television show based on it, I was thrilled. I'm still thrilled.
The opening ep was based on the Craig Johnson book 'Hell Is Empty'. For as in depth as that book is, I thought the producers did a fantastic job of cramping that whole storyline in just over 43 minutes.
As far as the tiresome comparisons of Justified to Longmire, one these things is not like the other. Take both shows separately and enjoy each show for the content it is.

Jared,
When word of the Longmire series came out you had endorsed Craig Johnson's books, over on FX I think. I took your advice and I am so glad I did. I got a box set of Longmire books for Christmas and I like them all so far. The books and the show complement eachother nicely. I think there is a fair amount going on beneath the surface so it takes more than one or two episodes to get the richness but it's a very good show.
Although the season premier was largely Walt's episode in the woods Longmire does feature the work of uber talented set designer Dave Blass. -side note Dave tweets that some of our Harlan sites in Green Valley are in fire danger right now :-(. We may start S5 with Raylan having burned Arlo's house down.
I am curious what you think of the native american portrayal on the show? Lou Diamond Phillips is not native american as far as I know and I would have thought they could have found a N.A. actor just as justified has cast mainly southerners.

Hard to come by Native American actors, because the look is too distinctive.
Lou is 1/4 Cherokee. (Which I find hilarious, because there is not the letter 'R' in the Cherokee language).
I'm a half-breed. I have no problem with the Native aspect of the show. The producers wanted a well known actor to to market it. Smart.
However, there was an episode last year with a biker named 'Micah'. That actor was 'Otter' from Dances With Wolves , but grown up. Give the season a chance. Things will come to fruition. I'd really like to know what you thought of the book Hell Is Empty. My favorite book so far.

Hi Jared,
How are you??!!
I've read A Cold Dish (which I think is the first one) and Death Without Company (#2). I have a thing about reading series in order. I liked them both. I'm looking forward to reading the rest. Summer is my reading time.
Hubby and I watched the S2 premiere and really enjoyed it. I'm excited to see where the show goes now that the characters have been established.
I like Lou Diamond Phillips. I thought he was at least part Native American and I was going to look it up, but you beat me to it!

I haven't read any of the Longmire books. I have to finish the book I'm reading now, or I would. I'm trying to finish a book I took out of the library. I like Lou Diamond Phillips, too.

I have so many books to read that I'm getting dizzy. I saw some of Longmire last season and liked it. Hope to follow season 2. The cast is pretty good and so are the stories. I try not to compare series that are "sort of alike," because in the final analysis, they aren't. Justified and Longmire stand on their own merits.
Glad to see you popping in, WT! We miss you when you aren't around. Hope you are well.

LJ, so glad I did right by the recommendations. Happy you're enjoying the reads.
Wkw, I tried leaving you a PM, but I don't think it worked. I don't remember how to leave one. And YM is mad at me. Don't know why that is, but I'm working on it.

Jared You're so right comparing these two shows, WT. Apples and oranges. I was making some digs at the networks. Several tried to jump on board the Western pilot wagon. As far as I can tell, Justified (which is not a Western) and Longmire are the only two that have successfully pulled it off. I enjoy the posts about the books. Like Justified, I do remember reading that Longmire came from good source material. Good casting, too.

I had to check because Hell is Empty did not sound familiar. The box set contained books 1 - 4; The Cold Dish, Kindness Goes Unpunished, Death Without Company, and Another Man's Moccasins (a Western Writer Award winner). I really enjoyed them all. They are fairly quick reads because they keep you absorbed, honestly, a little more than E. Leonard.
I will definitely read on but I want to read the Dark Horse and Junkyard Dogs before I get to Hell is Empty. I am surprised to find out they started the Longmire show with an episode based on the seventh book in the series. I am curious to read it and find out why.
The fun part about discovering an author late is that there are a lot of books you can read one after the other. You don't have to wait a year in between. I will comment when I have read Hell is Empty. I am sure it will be a good one.

I watch The Glades and Longmire came on after and Yes I like it very much. It is well written. The big difference between it and Justified is the same difference with all TV and Justified. No Timothy Olyphant. That man is sexy, funny and just plain fun to watch. Rest of Tv is good but again...no TO....

I just finished watching episode 2 of the 2nd season, "Carcasses." I thought it was a very good stand alone episode. I'm still not sure what happened at the end with Katie Longmire, but I guess that was to make me want to tune in next week?
This story felt like a real story, and it was very well told. It kept me guessing until the end.

Longmire is a well written show. It's a different feel than Justified, and the characters are not as colorful as the character's in Justified, but it's still very entertaining.

I embrace my shallowness. But luckily for me, most of the men I find sexiest happen to be amazing actors, so I don't wind up watching trash like Las Vegas. *high five*

I always liked Lou Diamond Philips, too, and he's excellent in this role.
