Shouldn't we have a thread for each of the movies so we can discuss?
I just got my copy of this from Amazon and I'm going to watch tonight. If anyone else has seen it, I'd love to chat later.

I liked this movie too. I think he was well cast, in that the character suited him very well. My heart just ached for him through most of it and you just couldn't wait for him to take action against those jerks or to convince her that it was him she should be with, lol. And wow, could a woman have a tougher choice than that? Let me see, Timothy Olyphant or Josh Brolin! Of course I thought TO was the clear choice but I felt bad for Josh at the same time. Poor guy, his only crime was that he was so steadfast and dependable that it seemed boring to her. She missed the excitement. The love scenes were great, particularly the kitchen scene, and the scene where she treats his wounds in her office, OMG, but still my favorite scene is when she reads to the girls and both guys come in and lay on the floor to listen. That is so adorable. I'm a sucker for sappy. Loved William Forsythe in this. He's got such a great face. Love to hate him.

Someone on another forum mentioned that TO seems to bring dignity to his roles, whether or not the character is dignified or deserves that...it's just there. I think that's especially true of Sonny in this. He's not a 'great' guy...he's got a shitload of problems, and yet, there's just this quiet worthiness to him, like he's more than the sum of his parts.
I agree, the scene where she is reading the story, I think it's Hans Christian Anderson's The Wild Swans, is lovely.
The thing I thought as I watched is that I could see the two actors switching roles, and it would still have worked. They play off each other very well.
I loved the end. I watched it with a friend and she thought it was ridiculous that these people would still be friends, but I didn't. I bought it. Their lives are all tied up together.

I also bought the ending and believe me I'm not someone who usually would have. There was just something about their relationships, all of them, that made you believe that the love they had for each other would help them all survive this. You wanted to hope so anyway.

Curious to hear what you have to say, particularly since I watched it on Netflix, and haven't heard the director's commentary or seen deleted scenes.

We should set up a time to discuss it. I know we all live in different zones, but maybe we could work something out.
I need to watch the deleted scenes.

I loved Coastlines. Sonny was not a bad person. He took the fall for the jerks he was working for and learned never to trust them again. He sought justice and got it. He might not have done this except for the fact that they owed him and they killed his father. He couldn't ignore that and I don't blame him. A perfect man would not covet his friend's wife, but hey, we're all human. I posted in another forum that I felt that adults wouldn't forgive each other so easily, but I'm glad that these characters did. There is unfinished business, however. Sonny and Dave each have to come to terms with what they did. They are both honorable men in most respects, and this has to be eating at them.

Is your avatar from 'Damages'?
Thursday would work for me...what time? I am having dinner with friends, but I'm available all afternoon or later in the evening.
mondayschild, I said on another forum that this is one movie where I'd like to revisit the characters in five or ten years and see where they're at.

Actually how about 9:00 tonight. I'll be done with the puppies by then and I just found out that my spousal unit has another gig tonight.
Yes, Damages. I've got to see that show

Since I watched the movie a few days ago, I have watched the deleted scene, but haven't been able to watch the commentary yet. The deleted scene sort of bore out my feeling that these three were in more than a friendship relationship for all of these years. Sonny and Dave had, or have, a brotherly love for each other. They both love Ann, and I'm sure she loved both of them. Ann went to nursing school, Dave went to the police academy or whatever and Sonny sort of drifted, working on cars and getting in up to his neck with the Vances. Being a pretty smart woman, Ann would naturally choose to marry Dave, who had a future. Their feelings haven't really changed though.

I think "Dave just asked first". Maybe that's what made Sonny Drift. After the 'one' was married to his best friend/'brother'. We were saying over at FX that we would like to see where these characters wind up in 10 years. You creative girls need to write us some fan fiction.

So would I. I accepted the premise that they all forgave each other and moved on from the drama, but real life doesn't usually play out like that. I just had this real prayer for them to be happy. I loved these characters, including the children and the dog. And Sonny's boss was a great mentor to him. Maybe in ten years he will be retired and Sonny will take over. He'll be known for his work and he'll have to hire more people to handle all the business. Maybe he and Effie will get together. So many possibilities; I am sad, however that his Dad is gone and won't see Sonny succeed.

Also, if Dave asked her first and Sonny had been thinking about it, but she had no clue, it would have been easy for her to conclude that Sonny didn't want to marry her or couldn't marry her. She moved on with Dave and things were good until Sonny came back. She sees him and her feelings come rushing back.. This happened to me in college, so I know it happens. Talk about being disoriented. I don't condone adultery, but I also don't blame Ann and Sonny. There was obviously a lack of closure there and they just had to find out. And Dave didn't really have a leg to stand on after he slept with the woman from the bar. Two wrongs have never made a right and they never will.
I'm still concerned that Sonny and Dave may not know exactly what the other did on the water. Maybe the director's commentary will help me with that.
Have to get some sleep now. I have a long day tomorrow. You ladies hash this all out and I'll catch up later.
